ALL MEN ARE NOT THE SAME
Chapter 5: The Secret Between Them
Amara could not move.
Her uncle's words echoed in her mind.
He was the person your father hired to watch over you.
She looked at Michael as if she were seeing him for the first time.
"You watched me?"
Michael's eyes filled with pain.
"Yes."
"For how long?"
"Before I met you."
Amara's voice trembled.
"How long?"
"Almost two years."
She laughed bitterly.
"Two years?"
Michael nodded.
"I was supposed to protect you from a distance."
"Then why did you come into my life?"
"I didn't plan to fall in love with you."
"That's not what I asked."
"I know."
She wiped her tears.
"Did my father send you?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"He was worried about you."
"Because of Daniel?"
"Partly."
"Partly?"
Michael took a step toward her.
"Your father knew there were people around you who couldn't be trusted. He believed someone wanted to use you to get to him."
Amara shook her head.
"Why didn't he tell me?"
"He thought keeping you unaware would keep you safe."
"Everyone keeps saying they were protecting me."
Her voice broke.
"But nobody asked what I wanted."
Michael looked down.
"I know."
Her uncle laughed.
"Now you understand, Amara. Everybody has been lying to you."
Michael turned toward him.
"Don't."
"Why not? She deserves the truth."
Amara looked between them.
"What else don't I know?"
Neither man answered.
"Tell me!"
Her uncle smiled.
"Ask Michael about the night your father disappeared."
Amara froze.
"My father didn't disappear. He died."
"That's what you were told."
Her breathing stopped.
"What are you saying?"
Michael immediately said,
"Your father is alive."
The room became completely silent.
Amara stared at him.
"What?"
Michael's eyes filled with tears.
"Your father is alive."
She shook her head.
"No."
"I saw him."
"No!"
"Amara—"
"My father died six years ago!"
"I know what you were told."
"Who told me?"
"Your mother."
Amara covered her mouth.
Her childhood memories suddenly became confusing.
Her mother's tears.
The funeral.
The closed coffin.
The people who had told her that her father had died unexpectedly.
"Where is he?"
Michael hesitated.
"Michael!"
"He's been hiding."
"Where?"
"I don't know."
Her uncle laughed.
"I know."
Everyone turned toward him.
"Where is my father?"
He smiled.
"Somewhere you would never think to look."
"Tell me."
"Not until you understand why he disappeared."
Amara stepped forward.
"You've already destroyed enough of my life."
"I'm trying to save it."
"You don't get to decide that!"
Her uncle's expression became serious.
"Your father made enemies."
"Who?"
"People with money. People with power. People who wanted something he had."
"What did he have?"
"A secret."
"What secret?"
Her uncle looked at Michael.
"He can tell you."
Amara turned toward Michael.
"Is that true?"
Michael nodded.
"Your father discovered a financial scheme involving several powerful people."
Amara's eyes widened.
"And he was going to expose them."
"Yes."
"That's why he disappeared?"
"Yes."
"Then why did everyone tell me he was dead?"
"Because they wanted you to stop looking for him."
Amara's legs felt weak.
She sat down.
"So my whole life has been a lie."
Michael sat beside her but did not touch her.
"I never wanted to lie to you."
"But you did."
"I know."
She looked at him.
"Did you love me when you first met me?"
Michael answered immediately.
"Yes."
"Or were you pretending?"
"I wasn't pretending."
"Then why should I believe anything you say now?"
Michael's eyes filled with tears.
"Because whatever brought me into your life, my love for you became real."
Amara looked away.
She wanted to believe him.
But trust had suddenly become fragile again.
Her entire life seemed built on secrets.
Then Sarah spoke.
"There is something you both need to know."
Amara turned.
"What?"
Sarah reached into her bag and pulled out an old envelope.
"I found this before I was taken."
She handed it to Amara.
Her name was written across the front.
For Amara.
Her hands shook as she opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
Amara stared at it.
It showed her father standing beside Michael.
But they were much younger.
On the back of the photograph were five words:
Trust the man beside you.
Amara looked at Michael.
"What does this mean?"
Michael's eyes widened.
"I've never seen that photograph."
Sarah shook her head.
"There's more."
She pulled out another piece of paper.
"This was hidden with it."
Amara opened it.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Her father's.
My daughter, if you are reading this, it means I failed to protect you from the truth. Michael was sent to watch over you, but I never expected him to become the person you would love. Do not punish him for the beginning of your story. Judge him by what he does when the truth is finally revealed.
Amara's tears fell onto the paper.
She read the final line.
And remember, my daughter: not every man who enters your life comes to destroy you. Some come to help you survive.
Amara slowly looked at Michael.
For the first time that night, she saw not a spy, not a stranger, and not a liar.
She saw the man who had held her when she had nothing left.
The man who had stayed when she expected him to leave.
The man who had loved her even when she was afraid to love herself.
But before she could speak, a gunshot sounded outside.
Everyone froze.
Michael immediately pulled Amara behind him.
Another gunshot echoed through the warehouse.
Sarah screamed.
Her uncle rushed toward the door.
Then someone shouted from outside.
"Nobody move!"
Michael looked at Amara.
"Stay here."
"No."
"This time, you have to trust me."
Amara held his hand.
"I do."
Michael nodded.
Then he moved toward the door.
And from the darkness outside came a voice Amara had not heard in years.
A voice she thought she would never hear again.
Her father's voice.
"Amara!"
She froze.
"Is that...?"
Michael looked at her.
"Your father."
Amara ran toward the door.
And for the first time in six years, she saw the man she had mourned standing alive in front of her.
Her father opened his arms.
"Amara."
She ran into them.
She cried like the little girl who had once believed she would never see him again.
But behind them, Michael remained still.
He knew the reunion was only the beginning.
Because the truth about Amara's father was much darker than she could imagine.
And before the night ended, she would discover why the people around her had spent years hiding him.
ALL MEN ARE NOT THE SAME
Chapter 6: The Father Who Returned
Amara could not stop crying.
Her father's arms were around her, and for several moments, nothing else mattered.
She had imagined this moment so many times.
As a child, she had dreamed that her father would walk through the front door and call her name.
As a teenager, she had convinced herself that the dreams were childish.
As an adult, she had finally accepted his death.
Now he was standing in front of her.
Alive.
"You're alive," she whispered.
Her father held her tighter.
"Yes, my daughter."
"Why did you leave me?"
He closed his eyes.
"I didn't leave you."
"Then why did everyone tell me you were dead?"
"Because I needed them to believe I was dead."
Amara pulled away.
"You allowed me to mourn you."
"I had no choice."
"You always had a choice!"
Her father's face fell.
"I know."
She wiped her tears.
"I grew up believing I had lost you."
"I know."
"I needed you."
"I know."
"Then why didn't you come back?"
Her father looked at Michael.
"Because coming back would have put you in greater danger."
Amara followed his gaze.
"So Michael really was protecting me?"
"Yes."
She looked at Michael.
"Did you know my father was alive?"
Michael hesitated.
"Yes."
Amara's heart tightened.
"How long?"
"Since the beginning."
She closed her eyes.
Another secret.
Another painful truth.
"You promised me you would never lie to me."
Michael stepped forward.
"I know."
"But you did."
"I was protecting your father."
"You were protecting everyone except me."
Her father interrupted gently.
"Amara, don't blame him. I ordered him to keep silent."
She turned toward him.
"You both decided what was best for me."
Her father nodded.
"Yes."
"And you were wrong."
"I know."
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Amara took a deep breath.
"Tell me everything."
Her father looked at the people around him.
"Not here."
"Why?"
"Because we aren't safe."
Michael immediately agreed.
"He's right."
Amara looked at him.
"Where do we go?"
Her father answered,
"Home."
---
They arrived at an old house outside the city shortly before midnight.
Amara looked around.
"This place..."
"Belonged to your grandfather," her father said.
She remembered it.
She had visited the house when she was a child.
Memories came rushing back.
Her father's laughter.
Her mother's cooking.
The garden where she used to play.
She walked slowly into the living room.
"It hasn't changed."
"Some things never do."
Her father sat down.
Michael remained standing.
Sarah sat quietly in a corner.
Amara looked at all of them.
"Now tell me the truth."
Her father sighed.
"Years ago, I discovered that several people were stealing money from a company I worked with."
"Who?"
"People I trusted."
"Did you expose them?"
"I tried."
"What happened?"
"They threatened my family."
Amara's eyes filled with tears.
"So you disappeared to protect us."
"Yes."
"Then why did Daniel become involved?"
Her father looked at Michael.
Michael answered.
"Daniel was being used."
"By whom?"
"Your uncle."
Amara stared at him.
"My uncle?"
Her father nodded.
"He wanted information from me."
"What information?"
"A list of names."
"What names?"
"People involved in the financial scheme."
Amara shook her head.
"Why would he want that?"
"Because he was one of them."
Silence.
Amara felt sick.
Her uncle.
The man she had trusted.
The man who had hugged her at family gatherings.
The man who had told her that family should always stand together.
He had betrayed them.
"But why destroy my relationship with Daniel?"
Her father answered,
"Because Daniel knew too much."
"So he used Sarah?"
"Yes."
Sarah lowered her head.
"I was foolish."
Amara looked at her.
"You were manipulated."
"I still hurt you."
"Yes."
Sarah nodded.
"I know."
Amara's anger had softened.
She was beginning to understand how many people had been controlled by fear.
Then her father said something that changed everything.
"Your uncle wasn't working alone."
Amara looked at him.
"Who was helping him?"
Her father became silent.
"Who?"
"Your mother."
Amara stopped breathing.
"No."
Her father looked at her sadly.
"She knew."
"My mother?"
"She knew I was alive."
Amara shook her head.
"You're lying."
"I wish I were."
"My mother mourned you."
"She did."
"She cried every day."
"Because she believed she would never see me again."
"But she knew you were alive!"
"Yes."
Amara's knees became weak.
She sat down.
"Why?"
"Because she was afraid."
"Afraid of what?"
Her father looked toward the window.
"Your uncle threatened her."
Amara covered her face.
Her family had been trapped in a web of fear for years.
Everyone had secrets.
Everyone had reasons.
But she was the one who had suffered the consequences.
Michael walked toward her.
"Amara."
She looked up.
"I don't know who to trust anymore."
He knelt beside her.
"Then don't trust everyone."
"What?"
"Trust slowly. Let people earn it."
She looked into his eyes.
"And you?"
"I'll spend the rest of my life earning it again if I have to."
Her father's eyes softened.
For the first time, he understood why Michael had become more than an assignment.
He had become family.
Suddenly, the lights went out.
Everyone froze.
Sarah whispered,
"Someone is here."
A noise came from outside.
Michael stood immediately.
"Nobody move."
A window shattered.
Amara screamed.
Her father grabbed her and pulled her down.
Michael moved toward the door.
Then the sound of footsteps echoed through the house.
Someone was inside.
Michael looked at Amara.
"Stay with your father."
"Michael—"
"I'll be back."
He disappeared into the darkness.
Amara held her father's hand tightly.
"Who is it?"
Her father whispered,
"The person we've been running from."
"Who?"
Before he could answer, a figure appeared at the end of the hallway.
Amara stared.
The person slowly stepped into the moonlight.
It was her mother.
But she was not alone.
Standing beside her was the one person Amara had never expected to see again.
Daniel.
Amara's heart stopped.
Daniel looked at her and whispered,
"I'm sorry."
Her mother began crying.
Then she said the words that changed everything:
"Amara, your father was never the person they wanted you to believe he was."
The room fell silent.
Amara stared at her mother.
"What are you talking about?"
Her mother looked at her husband.
"Tell her."
Her father lowered his head.
"I was the one who started it."
Amara's face went pale.
"Started what?"
Her father looked directly into her eyes.
"The entire plan."
And suddenly, Amara realized that the story she thought she understood was only the beginning.
The real enemy had not been Daniel.
It had not been Sarah.
And it had not been Michael.
The real enemy was someone much closer.
Someone who had been waiting patiently for Amara to discover the truth.
