Carnell dispatched the demon Madame Toulet with the same swift strokes as he’d done the demon Perrault, but it was evident from his clammy skin and ragged breathing that the effort had come at a cost. I watched as the big man stumbled and slumped on to Emma’s bed, dragging the sword across the carpet as though he no longer had the capacity to lift it. “Demoiselles, I must insist you come with us, we cannot keep you safe here. Lilith is clearly aware that the prophecy has entered a fresh cycle, and she will continue to send her minions to assassinate you.” Perrault calmly crouched as he spoke, using the dustpan and brush to sweep up the remains of the demon Toulet. I eyed Carnell warily; the dark-haired man’s condition seemed to worsen by the minute. “What’s wrong with him?” I demanded.
