It was over. There was nothing I could do to save Emma or me, much to my despair. It seemed obvious I’d be the Haruspex who’d failed; the responsibility had been on me to try and save the world and I’d made a mess of things. I was so tired. As blood flowed from the wound on my shoulder, I grew weaker by the minute. I fell onto my knees, wanting to lie down, close my eyes and give up. Perhaps that was what I should do. Give up.
