Chapter 3.

1027 Words
My lungs burn as I race through the dark forest, the sounds of Scott's pursuit echoing behind me. I clutch the tattered cloak around my shoulders, my mind racing with a thousand thoughts. I have to get away, to find a way to save Trevor before it's too late. As I leap over a fallen tree trunk, I catch a glimpse of movement in the corner of my eye. I immediately freeze, every muscle in my body tensing. There, amongst the shadows, I see Elaine, Scott's cunning Beta, her eyes gleaming with malicious intent. "Going somewhere, Charlotte?" she purrs, her voice dripping with disdain. I take a step back, my heart pounding in my chest. "Elaine, please, you have to understand. I can't stay with Scott, not after what he's done." She lets out a low, mocking laugh. "Oh, I understand perfectly, my dear. But you see, Scott is my Alpha, and his word is law. Which means that I can't let you leave." I open my mouth to protest, but before I can utter a single word, Elaine lunges forward, her claws slashing through the air. I barely manage to dodge the attack, my heart racing as I scramble to keep my footing. "Elaine, stop this!" I plead, my voice desperate. "Scott doesn't have to know. Just let me go, please!" But Elaine is relentless, her eyes burning with a primal fury. "I'm afraid that's not an option, Charlotte. You belong to Scott, and I won't let you betray him." She lunges again, her claws scoring deep gashes in my arm. I cry out in pain, my vision blurring with tears. I know that I can't outrun her, not in my current state. I have to find a way to fight back. Summoning every ounce of my strength, I lash out with my own claws, feinting to the left before striking at her unprotected flank. Elaine howls in surprise and pain, and I seize the opportunity to break free, my legs pumping as I race deeper into the forest. But Elaine is persistent, and soon her snarls are echoing all around me. I can feel the adrenaline coursing through my veins, fueling my desperate dash for freedom. I have to keep going, I have to find a way to escape. And then, up ahead, I catch a glimpse of something that makes my heart soar with hope – a familiar figure, tall and strong, stepping out from the shadows. "Trevor!" I cry, my voice barely above a whisper. He whirls around, his eyes widening as he sees me. "Charlotte! What are you doing out here?" I don't have time to explain. "Elaine is after me, Trevor. We have to get out of here, now!" Trevor's expression hardens, his body tensing as he scans the forest. "Where is she?" As if on cue, Elaine's enraged howl pierces the air, drawing ever closer. Trevor's gaze snaps to the sound, his muscles coiling with the instinct to fight. "Trevor, please," I plead, grabbing his arm. "We have to run. Scott will kill you if he finds you here." But Trevor shakes his head, his eyes burning with determination. "I won't let her take you back to Scott, Charlotte. Not after everything we've been through." Before I can protest, Elaine bursts through the trees, her claws bared and her teeth bared in a savage snarl. Trevor steps in front of me, shielding me with his body, and the two wolves collide in a flurry of fur and fangs. I watch in horror as they grapple and claw at each other, their snarls and growls echoing through the forest. Trevor is fighting with every ounce of his strength, but Elaine is a seasoned warrior, and the strain is beginning to show on his battered body. Suddenly, Elaine gains the upper hand, pinning Trevor to the ground and snapping her jaws dangerously close to his throat. I open my mouth to scream, but the sound is frozen in my throat. "Any last words, pup?" Elaine hisses, her eyes glinting with triumph. Trevor's gaze locks with mine, and in that moment, I see a flash of unbridled determination. "Charlotte," he rasps, "run!" Without hesitation, I turn and flee, my legs pumping as I race through the forest. I can hear the sounds of the battle fading behind me, and a part of me aches to turn back, to fight alongside Trevor. But I know that I have to keep going, that I have to find a way to escape Scott's reach. I have to be strong, for both of us. As I run, my mind races, frantically searching for a way out. And then, it hits me – the old abandoned mine, the one that Scott's pack had long since forgotten about. If I can make it there, I might just have a chance. With renewed vigor, I push on, my lungs burning and my legs aching. The entrance to the mine comes into view, and I don't hesitate, diving into the darkness and praying that Elaine won't be able to follow. Once inside, I collapse against the cool, damp walls, my heart pounding in my chest. I know that I can't stay here forever, that Scott and his pack will eventually come looking for me. But for now, I'm safe. And as I sit there in the darkness, I can't help but wonder about Trevor's fate. Is he still alive? Did he manage to escape Elaine's attack? The thought of him lying injured, or worse, in the forest fills me with a fresh wave of dread. I have to find a way to help him, to get him to safety. Even if it means risking everything. With a steely resolve, I push myself to my feet, my eyes adjusting to the dim light of the mine. I may be trapped, but I'm not going to give up. Not while Trevor is still out there, fighting for his life. I'll find a way to escape this place, and then I'll go to him. I'll save him, no matter the cost. Because that's what love does – it makes you willing to risk everything.
