Chapter 1: Run For Your Life

1655 Words
"Here you go, ma'am," I handed the medicine to my seventy-eight-year-old employer who was sitting in the wheelchair right after I fed her dinner. She has been in that wheelchair for almost a year now since she couldn't walk or stand anymore due to an accident and I have been taking care of her for over five months already. She could speak, thankfully. "Thank you, Arra," She smiled. She has always been so kind to me. She would sometimes tell me how lucky she is that she has someone like me who takes care of her well because she had difficulties with her previous employees before. "We should get you to bed," I smiled. It's almost eight in the evening and it's not good for her to stay up late. She needs to rest as much as possible. She nodded. She usually sleeps at that hour so there was no complaint from her. We headed to her room and as usual, I pushed her towards her bedside table where a photo of her deceased husband was placed in a frame right beside a lamp. In the photo, he was wearing his Marine Corps uniform wherein she told me that he was about to retire at that time. She would always kiss him goodnight before she goes to bed every single night. She never forgets about it and I would always give her time to do that. It’s kind of admiring how she never ever forgets her husband even for a single day since he was gone. I help her get into her bed and settled down. She was light as she already lost weight when she started her treatment. After the accident, she had a kidney failure and some complications in her organs as well that's why she has medicines that she needs to take in. "Good night, Mrs. Smith," I said just before I turned the lights off. The moment that she gets to bed, I am free to do whatever I want. Well, it was just the two of us in her house since she didn’t hire any housemaids when I told her that I can do things on my own at her house. I do the cleaning, laundry, and everything else when she takes her nap in the afternoon and when she sits on the lanai for some fresh air. Taking care of her isn’t as hard as I thought it would be since she isn’t making things complicated for us. It was also convenient for me because I was paid double the price since I was an all-around employee. "Good night, Arra," She responded right when I was about to close the door. It was still early for me. As usual, I would eat my dinner right after I put Mrs. Smith to bed. That's how my day would go by and then I would busy myself watching television shows. I headed to the kitchen and looked for something to cook. Yes, I am a stay-in nanny for Mrs. Smith and I am pretty well compensated. I earn money that I can send to my family who lives in a different country. Yes, I am an overseas worker. I only came to this country to work as a domestic helper which is something that others would think too lowly of but I do not. I think that it is an admirable and difficult job to do that only a few people are capable of. I took the butter out of the fridge. I was too tired so I decided to just eat some toasted bread and put some butter on it. I badly needed to lie down after a whole day of exhaustion while watching my favorite show. As you see, taking care of an old woman is a hard thing to do. They can be as hard-headed as those toddlers we see in the park sometimes but I wasn't complaining, I love Mrs. Smith and she loves me too. Taking care of her is enjoyable and I find my job satisfying. I was scrolling through my phone while enjoying what I call my dinner when I heard banging on the door. I wasn't surprised; things like this happen every now and then in that household. It was Nick. Mrs. Smith's one and only child and based on the banging he was doing on the door, I figured he must be drunk again. He seldom goes home but when he does, he's usually too drunk to even open the door using his keys. I sighed and put down my food. I went over to the main door and opened it to see a wide smile on his face. "Oh, A-arra! W-what a beautiful face I see!" He was stuttering and couldn't even stand properly. He stink of alcohol and I bet he had more than he could handle. "You're drunk again," The last time that he went home was last month and he was drunk too. I don't really know what's up with him and I didn't ask. I was just keeping my nose to myself. Besides, I don’t really feel like being connected with him somehow even if he was Mrs. Smith’s only child. "A-am I?" He laughed. I opened the door wider for him to enter. I didn't help him. I wasn't even planning on helping him up to his room. I usually would just open the door and leave him there to himself. He’s too heavy and I was too exhausted for that. I shook my head as I looked at him. He's a hopeless case. His mom has been asking him to start taking his life seriously but he didn't listen. He's just a twenty-year-old guy who doesn't want to take responsibility for his life and the choices he’s making. I walked back to the kitchen to finish my food. I still have to clean after myself before heading to my room which was just downstairs right beside Mrs. Smith's. I was almost done when Nick appeared in the kitchen doorway. His eyes were directed at me and I felt uncomfortable. It was the first time that he looked at me like that. I shrugged that thought off me and washed everything on the sink. I saw that he went to the fridge and took out a bottle of beer which he has stocked when he last came. I ignored him completely and was about to head out of the kitchen when he blocked the way out. I looked up to him. He had that mischievous grin on his lips that made me tremble. What is he doing? Why am I not liking the glances he was giving me and my body? "What do you want?" I asked fiercely. I didn't want him to think that I was scared of him. I even raised a brow at him. How dare he come here drunk and disturb our peaceful night! "Y-you look different tonight." He said as he touched my arm lightly. I was starting to get scared of what he was thinking of doing. I was wearing a pair of denim shorts and a racerback top because it felt hot earlier that day. I was just about to change after dinner. "What are you doing? Stop it!" I said and pushed his hand away. “Come on,” He said and tried holding my hand but I moved it away from him. "Let me through!" I said in gritted teeth but I was still controlling my voice. I didn’t want to wake up his mother. I pushed him but he didn't even move. I was about to push him and walk past through when he took a knife off his pocket. It was small but it looked sharp. Is he being serious right now? I didn't think he was bringing a knife with him all the time. "N-Nick...w-what are you doing?" I stuttered. I couldn't hide my fear anymore. What if he stabs me using that knife? He was strong and I couldn’t level to his strength. Plus the thought that he wasn’t thinking straight and was influenced by alcohol didn’t help at all. “I’ve wanted to do this for quite a while now.” He said and started touching my face while his other hand was holding the knife right by my waist. This is becoming insane! What does he want? I cringed at his touches. It just didn’t feel right. “You little tease. You always walk around flaunting that ass of yours as if you were teasing me and I couldn’t hold this anymore.” He said and was about to kiss me but I used everything in me to push him hard which made him fall to the floor. He was a bit disoriented because he was drunk. I didn’t think that he has been feeling that way towards me. I mean, he wasn’t even there all the time for him to say that. My ass? Why is he even watching me? I used that opportunity to run away from him. He screamed my name and I didn’t know if his mother heard that from her room. I wanted to check on her but I saw Nick getting up with the knife in his hand. I panicked. I run towards the door and went outside. I cannot let him do whatever he wants to do with me. I ran as fast as I could and didn’t even look back. I didn’t know where I was going but one thing is for sure, I won’t stay and let him use that knife on me. I didn’t notice that I was already on the street. I was totally disoriented and I looked around deciding where to go when a bright light hit my eyes. I covered my eyes and screamed when I realized that a car was approaching and I just stood there off-guard.
