After checking out of the motel, Mia pulled up at the Scrub N’ Shine 24-Hour Car Wash in downtown Kaufman at a little after nine. Sure enough, the place was empty.
That was the problem, these days. Everything was under video surveillance. Even outdoor spaces, like neighborhood parks. Anything they did, they had to do it with the expectation that they were being watched. It had made these last few weeks absolutely hair-raising.
She sat in the lot across from the car wash, waiting for David to arrive with his dark sedan and reading an article that had just appeared in the Dallas Observer.
