Chapter 1: First Encounter

Alessandro POV Today is the first day of the second semester and as I stealthily navigated the bustling halls of the Academy, a mix of nervousness and excitement coursed through my veins. For weeks, I had meticulously orchestrated this "coincidental" encounter with Valentina, driven by a relentless desire to get closer to her. While I could have easily eliminated her, there was something about her innocence, her compassion for the stray cats in the alleys, that made me hesitate. From a distance, I had observed her every move, discreetly following her, searching for any signs of deception. Yet, she appeared to be nothing more than an ordinary college student, engrossed in her love for books. As she walked, her eyes fixated on her phone, I executed my plan flawlessly, "accidentally" bumping into her near the entrance of the library. With a swift motion, I caught her arm, a smile playing on my lips, masking my true intentions. "Oh, I'm so sorry! I didn't see you there," I uttered, my voice laced with genuine concern. Valentina looked up at me, our eyes locking in a moment. "No worries. It happens," she replied, her voice tinged with curiosity. As I held her arm, I couldn't help but notice the softness of her hands, the calluses on the tips of her fingers. She seemed more like a musician than a potential killer. Taking a calculated pause, I gathered my thoughts, carefully choosing my words. "Hey, I've seen you around here before. Are you new to the Academy?" I inquired, aiming to initiate a conversation that would serve my ulterior motives. She nodded, a small smile gracing her face. "Yeah, I just started this semester. It's been a bit overwhelming, to be honest," she confessed. Suppressing a smirk, I chuckled, attempting to alleviate her nerves. "I know the feeling. But trust me, it gets better. If you ever need any help or someone to show you around, I'd be more than happy to assist." Gratitude flickered in her eyes as they met mine. "That's really kind of you. I might take you up on that offer sometime." I nodded, concealing my true intentions beneath a facade of sincerity. "Great! Just let me know whenever you're free. I'm usually around," I assured her as she walked away. ".... " Is she really a daughter of Moretti? How come she's gentle and clumsy? I'm starting to doubt whether Luca gave me the right information about this woman. As I stealthily followed behind her, my heart raced with anticipation. I had the perfect opportunity to eliminate her, to end my mission once and for all. With my gun in hand, I approached her from behind, ready to strike. But as I pointed the weapon at her, something stopped me in my tracks. She seemed completely oblivious to the danger that lurked behind her. It was as if she had no idea that her life was hanging by a thread. In that moment, a wave of hesitation washed over me. Despite my ruthless nature when it came to dealing with my enemies, I couldn't bring myself to harm an innocent person, especially someone who seemed so clueless about the danger she was in. It wasn't her fault that she was born into my enemy's family. I knew I had to observe her further, to gather more information before making any irreversible decisions. Killing her without knowing the full extent of her involvement would be a grave mistake. So, I reluctantly lowered my gun, allowing her to continue on her way, unaware of the close call she had just narrowly escaped. "Oh... you're here too?" she said, turning around to face me. I couldn't help but give her a playful smile in response, trying to hide the confusion that was swirling inside me. "It seems like we're classmates," I casually remarked, attempting to maintain a sense of normalcy. To my surprise, she smiled back and extended her hand towards me. "Great! I'm Valentina Moretti, and you are?" she asked, her voice filled with genuine warmth. I accepted her handshake, unable to tear my gaze away from her eyes. As I looked into her eyes, a smirk formed on my lips, but deep down, I couldn't help but wonder. "Sandro DiMarco," I introduced myself, using my carefully crafted fake identity. Her smile widened, seemingly delighted by our newfound connection, as we shook hands. But as her soft hand met mine, a wave of uncertainty washed over me. How could someone with such a gentle touch be the daughter of a notorious mafia boss? It didn't quite add up. She even revealed her real name to me, a detail that left me even more perplexed. How could she be so careless, so trusting? Was she truly the target I had been assigned to eliminate? Or was there something more to this situation? The uncertainty gnawed at me, making it difficult to trust my instincts. As I tried to make sense of it all, a sense of unease settled within me. Valentina's carefree demeanor and openness only added to my confusion. I couldn't afford to let my guard down, not when the stakes were so high. I had to tread carefully, navigating the treacherous path of deception and danger, all while trying to uncover the truth behind Valentina's seemingly innocent facade. We entered the classroom, and Valentina began searching for a seat. However, before she could find one, a playful student accidentally bumped into her, causing her to fall to the ground. "Ouch... That really hurt," she winced, gathering her belongings that had scattered. I stood there, silently observing the scene unfold before me. It was difficult to comprehend how someone who was the daughter of a powerful mafia boss could be pushed around so easily. The contrast between her background and her current situation was baffling. "Are you alright?" I asked, extending my hand to help her up. She looked up at me,l with her teary eyes. "My knees hurt," she whimpered, pouting slightly. I couldn't help but feel a mix of emotions. It was hard to reconcile the image of a strong mafia boss's daughter with the vulnerable girl before me. "Miss, I'm sorry!" our classmate apologized, clearly remorseful for the accident. Valentina simply smiled in response. "It's alright, just be more careful next time," she kindly replied, her smile radiating warmth and understanding. Valentina held onto my bag, pulling me towards the back row of seats. "Sandro, let's sit there," she said in a friendly manner. I agreed, as my plan was to get closer to her. However, it seemed that she was the one approaching me, making my task easier. We sat together at the back of the classroom. Out of nowhere, Valentina suddenly said, "Sandro, thank you." "Huh?" I asked, confused by her sudden gratitude. She smiled at me and leaned slightly closer. "I was really nervous about being an outcast on my first day here, but thanks to you, it seems like I won't be lonely this time," she said, her eyes filled with a hint of sadness. "Why? With your personality, I'm sure you can make plenty of friends," I reassured her. She smiled bitterly in response. "Not at all. They're only nice to me because of my last name. Deep down, they're just afraid of me because I'm the daughter of a notorious figure," she confessed. I couldn't help but feel a mix of emotions. So, she really was the heir of the Moretti family. "But what makes you think that I'm not scared of you or something?" I asked, genuinely curious. She smiled mischievously. "That's a secret. No clues," she playfully replied, looking away. "That's unfair," I protested, and she burst into laughter. "Find out for yourself, hahaha," she teased. As I observed her, I couldn't help but wonder if Valentina's innocent and cheerful demeanor was genuine or just an act. I knew I had to conduct a proper investigation later, but for now, I needed to keep a closer eye on her. Only then would I be able to determine whether I should eliminate her or not. To be continued...
