Alpha Clint's desire to help me really worried me. I mean, he was a stranger and the son of the man who was willing to make my life a living hell.
I was taken to a strange place by Madam Poof who was in charge of making sure that slaves like me really did what they are told. She didn't speak much to me, but she did know how to use her whip. It was like being struck with fire. I could feel it burning into my skin, but there wasn't much pain involved.
She took me back through the maze of tunnels where I had been beaten earlier that day until we came to another door. This one looked different from the others; this one had windows so you could see out. A guard stood at attention outside. He opened the door for us as we approached and then left quickly without a word.
In front of me sat an old man. His eyes were closed as if he was sleeping, but his breathing was very deep and steady. I guess he needed sleep after all those beatings.
"Hey," I said softly, "What's your name?"
He didn't move or say anything, just continued to breathe deeply.
Madam Poof came up behind him and slapped him hard across the face. Her hand stung as it connected with his skin, but it seemed to have no effect on him whatsoever.
"Open your eyes!" she demanded. "You've got work to do!"
The old man slowly opened his eyes and stared directly into mine. They were clear and intelligent, though his expression was emotionless. He spoke only two words before closing his eyes again.
"Don't let them see you cry."
Then he slumped over onto his side and slept some more.
It took me a few moments to figure out what he meant, but when I realized I started sobbing uncontrollably. The tears streamed down my cheeks as I cried for everything I'd lost and everything I feared would happen to me in my situation.
Madam Poof grabbed me roughly by the arm and pulled me away from the old man.
"Stop crying!" she ordered harshly. "That's not how slaves behave! You're going to get yourself killed if you don't stop bawling like a baby! If you want to cry, go to the toilet and do it there!"
I wiped the tears from my eyes as best I could with my hands and glared hatefully at her.
"Do you understand?" she asked angrily. "If you start crying in here, someone will come looking for you and they'll find you dead next time they open that door. Do you understand?"
I nodded and she released me.
"Good," she sneered. "Now get moving, little slave. Your master is waiting for you."
I made my way back through the maze of tunnels until I reached the room where Alpha Clint waited for me. He was sitting on a chair in the corner of the room.
"Where have you been?" he demanded. "I have been worried sick about you!"
I tried to explain to him what had happened since I'd been taken captive, but he didn't seem to be listening. All he kept saying was that he would be coming soon to collect me. That he was going to help me. That he was going to find a solution for me even though I was from an enemy clan.
When he finally finished talking, he simply said that it would take a lot of time and effort, but that he was sure that he could find a way to fix my problem.
I couldn't believe what I was hearing. My whole world was going crazy as I thought about all the things he said. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if he found a way to free me. But what if he failed? What if he didn't succeed? Then I would be stuck here forever. I couldn't imagine living the rest of my life as a slave.
As I was thinking, I noticed that he was staring at me intently. He was examining my face as if he were trying to read my mind.
"What are you doing?" I asked.
"Just looking," he said quietly.
I frowned and looked down at myself. I was wearing the same outfit as before, but this time it felt like I was wearing something different.
"How is your mother?" He asked.
"My mother?" I could not figure out how to respond.
"Yes! How is she?"
"My mother is dead," I said to him. "She died fighting against your pack."
Alpha Clint looked at me in a way that made me feel he was thinking about how he was going to help me, but I found it funny that he was actually thinking of a way to help me when there was really nothing he could do for me.
I was part of the Sacred Sun Pack. I was a member of a pack that was against the Sacred Moon Pack. I was an enemy of the Sacred Moon Pack, and I was forever going to be an enemy of the Sacred Moon Pack.
"I have to go now," Alpha Clint said to me gently. "I will try to talk to my parents about your situation. It is not going to be easy, but I am going to talk to them."
"What if they don't listen to you?" I asked him. "You know that I have fought against your pack for several years. You know that I have killed some members of your pack. You know that I have been a problem to a good number of people in your pack."
"I know that," Alpha Clint responded without smiling. "I am aware of your story, Sophia. You don't have to remind me about it. The thing here is, you are my mate. I feel it so strongly within me, and my duty is to protect you from any harm no matter what the cost is. Do you understand?"
"Yes!" I nodded slowly.
