The safehouse smelled like coffee and gun oil.
I didn’t slEEp. Not really.
Every time I closed my eyes I saw Marco’s smile. Heard the gunshots. Felt Damian’s body covering mine.
At 6 AM there was a knock. One of the female guards.
"Mr. Blackwood sent clothes. And a car. We leave in 30.
The clothes were black again. But this time it was a drEss.
Simple. Knee length. Long sleeves. No jewelry.
_For court_, the note said. _We look respectable when we lie._
Damian was waiting in the SUV when I got in.
He looked different today. Black suit. White shirt. No tie.
The bandage on his arm was hidden. But there were dark circles under his eyes.
"Morning," he said.
"Did you sleep?"
"2 hours." He handed me coffee. "You?"
"Same."
We didn’t talk for the first 20 minutes. The city was already awake.
Finally, I asked. "Where are we going?"
"Blackwood Tower. 52nd floor. My lawyer’s office." He glanced at me. "We sign today."
"The marriage contract?"
"The marriage contract. And the addendum." His jaw tightened. "Clause 10."
The vow. _Blood for blood._
My stomach flipped. "What happens after we sign?"
"Then you’re legally my wife," he said simply. "On paper. For the next 2 years."
"And after 2 years?"
"After 2 years, we divorce. You get 5 million. Lily gets the best treatment for life. And we Walk away."
It sounded so clean when he said it.
It didn’t feel clean.
*9:00 AM. Blackwood Tower.*
The building was glass and steel. 80 floors of power.
We didn’t go through the lobby. We took a private elevator. Keycard access.
Inside the elevator, it was just us.
Damian pressed 52.
The doors closed.
Silence.
Then: "Are you scared?"
"Yes," I admitted. "Of signing my life away."
"You’re not," he said. "You’re signing a business deal. That’s all this is."
"That’s all?" I looked at him. "Then why did you add Clause 10? That wasn’t business."
He didn’t answer. The elevator dinged.
Doors opened.
*9:05 AM. The Lawyer’s Office.*
It was all white. White floors. White desks. White walls.
Like a hospital. Or a tomb.
A man stood up when we entered. Late 50s. Gray suit. Glasses.
"Mr. Blackwood. Ms. Hale." He shook our hands. "I’m Richard Cole. I’ve handled your family’s legal affairs for 20 years."
"Richard," Damian said. "The papers."
"Right here." Cole gestured to a massive conference table.
On it were 3 stacks of paper. At least 100 pages each.
And a pen. Black. Expensive.
"Sit," Cole said.
We did. Side by side. Not touching.
But I could feel the heat from his arm.
Cole cleared his throat. "Standard NDA first. You may not disclose the terms of this marriage. To anyone. Violation is 10 million dollars."
I signed.
"Second. The prenup. Ms. Hale waives all rights to Blackwood assets, with the exception of the 5 million settlement after 2 years, and full medical coverage for Lily Hale."
I signed.
"Third. The marriage Contract." Cole pushed the thickest stack forward. "2 years. Public appearances. Cohabitation. No infidelity. And..." he paused. "Protection clause."
He looked at Damian. "This is new."
"It stays," Damian said.
Cole nodded and flipped to the last page.
Clause 10. Handwritten.
_In the event of threat to either party, the other will provide protection. No questions asked. A vow._
Cole frowned. "This is not legally binding, Mr. Blackwood."
"I know," Damian said. "It’s a vow."
Cole looked at me. "Ms. Hale. Do you understand what you’re signing?"
"Yes," I said. My voice was steady. "I do."
"Then sign."
I picked up the pen. My hand didn’t shake.
_Aria Hale._
The ink was black against the white page.
Damian signed next. _Damian Blackwood._
Right below my name.
The moment the pen left his hand, Cole said. "Congratulations. You’re married. Legally. As of 9:17 AM."
It was that fast. That easy.
My life changed with two signatures.
Cole gathered the papers. "I’ll file these with the city. You’ll need to do a public announcement within 48 hours. Photos. For the press."
"Already planned," Damian said. He stood. "Thank you, Richard."
"Always a pleasure, Damian." Cole looked at me. "Take care of him, Ms. Hale. He’s a stubborn man."
"I will," I said. And meant it.
We walked out.
*9:25 AM. The Hallway.*
The moment the office door closed, Damian stopped.
He leaned against the wall and closed his eyes. Just for a second.
"You okay?" I asked.
"Fine." He opened his eyes. "It’s done."
Something in his face was different. Lighter. Heavier.
I couldn’t tell.
His phone buzzed. He looked at it and cursed.
"What?"
"Unknown number. Text." He showed me.
_Congrats on the wedding. I give it 3 days before she’s in a body bag. - M_
Marco.
My blood went cold. "He knows already."
"He has people everywhere," Damian said. He typed back.
_Touch her and I’ll put your head on a spike._
He hit send.
"Don’t," I said. "Don’t engage."
"I don’t," he said. "I warn."
The elevator came. We got in.
*9:40 AM. Back in the SUV.*
"Where to now?" I asked.
"Home. To pack. Then to Noah’s school."
"Noah?"
"My son," Damian said. "He’s 8. He doesn’t know about you yet."
The word hit me. Son.
Damian had a son.
"He lives with his grandparents," Damian continued. "Elena’s parents. They hate me. But they let me see him on weekends." He looked out the window. "I have to tell him. Today."
"Does he know what you do?"
"No. And he won’t. Not from me." Damian’s voice was hard. "He thinks I’m a businessman. Imports and exports."
We pulled into the garage of Blackwood Tower.
*10:15 AM. The Penthouse.*
It was clean. Too clean. Like no one lived here.
Damian walked straight to a room I hadn’t seen before. An office.
He pulled out a box. Inside were photos.
A woman. Blonde. Smiling. Holding a little boy.
Elena.
"She was good," Damian said quietly. "Better than me. Better than this world."
He touched the photo. "Cancer. 2 years ago."
I didn’t know what to say. So I didn’t say anything.
He put the photo down. "Noah looks like her. But he has my temper."
His phone rang. He answered. "Yeah?"
A pause.
"What? When?"
Another pause. His face went hard.
"I’ll be there in 20."
He hung up.
"Problem?"
"Noah’s school. There was a threat. Bomb scare. They’re evacuating."
He was already grabbing his jacket. "I have to go."
"I’m coming with you."
"No."
"Damian—"
"No," he said again, but softer. "It’s not safe. Stay here. With guards."
He was at the door when I said it. "You’re scared."
He stopped.
"For him," he said without turning. "I’m terrified."
Then he was gone.
*11:30 AM. Alone.*
The hours passed slowly.
I paced. I called the hospital. Lily was fine. Sleeping.
At 1 PM, Damian walked in.
He looked exhausted. Angry. Relieved.
"Noah’s okay," he said before I could ask. "It was a false alarm. Some kid’s prank."
He collapsed onto the couch and put his head in his hands.
For the first time, he looked his age. Tired. Human.
I sat next to him. Not touching.
"You’re a good dad," I said.
"You don’t know that."
"I know you ran out of here like the building was on fire."
He laughed. A short, bitter sound. "I’m not good at this. The dad thing. The husband thing."
"You’re trying," I said. "That counts."
He looked at me. Really looked.
"Aria," he said my name like he was testing it. "Why did you sign? You could have run. After last night."
"Because of Lily," I said. "Because of the 5 million."
"That’s not all."
"No," I admitted. "It’s not."
He waited.
"Because when you covered me last night, I believed you. When you said ‘I’ve got you’, I believed you." I looked down. "And I’m tired of being scared alone."
The room went quiet.
Outside, the city hummed.
Damian reached out. Slowly. Like I might bolt.
He took my hand.
His was warm. Calloused.
"We signed a contract," he said. "But Clause 10... that was me. That wasn’t business."
"I know."
"I don’t let people in, Aria. Ever. But you..." He stopped.
"What?"
"You feel like home. And that terrifies me more than Marco."
The honesty knocked the air out of me.
Before I could answer, his phone buzzed again.
He looked at it and his entire body went still.
"What is it?"
He turned the screen to me.
A photo.
Me. Walking into the lawyer’s office this morning.
And text below it.
_Beautiful. You look happy. See you soon, Mrs. Blackwood. - M_
Marco was watching us.
Damian stood immediately. "We have to move. Now. He knows where you are."
He was already calling guards. "Pack a bag. We’re leaving in 5."
I stood too. My legs were shaky.
"Damian."
"Yeah?"
"We’re married now." The words felt weird. "On paper."
"On paper," he agreed.
He walked to me and stopped. Inches away.
"Which means, from now on, anyone who comes for you goes through me first."
He leaned down.
And kissed my forehead.
Not romantic. Not s****l.
A promise.
"Let’s go home, wife," he said.
The word wife made my heart stutter.
As we walked out, guards all around us, I realized something.
This wasn’t just a contract anymore.
This was a war.
And I was no longer just Aria Hale.
I was Aria Blackwood.
