*3:00 AM. Safehouse.*
I didn’t sleep.
Not really.
Damian’s arm was around me. Heavy. Warm.
Every time I moved, he pulled me closer. Like if he let go, I’d disappear.
The second kiss was still on my lips.
Slow. Real. Not a mistake.
I was about to drift off when his phone buzzed on the nightstand.
Once. Twice. Three times.
Damian was awake instantly.
"Don’t move," he whispered. He rolled out of bed and answered.
I couldn’t hear the other side. Just his voice. Low. Dangerous.
"What. Say that again."
"Where?"
"How long?"
A pause. "Fuck."
He hung up. Stared at the phone for 3 seconds. Then he looked at me.
And I knew.
"Marco?" I asked.
He nodded once. "He hit one of my warehouses. Burned it down. No casualties."
"That’s good, right?"
Damian walked to the window. Pulled the curtain back an inch.
"That’s not the move. That’s a distraction."
My stomach dropped. "Distraction from what?"
"From this." He held up his phone. A text.
Unknown number: _You took something from me. Now I take something from you.
11 AM. Riverside Elementary. Bring the girl. Or the boy pays._
Riverside Elementary.
Noah’s school.
The coffee from this morning turned to acid in my throat.
"What time is it now?" I asked.
"3:07."
He had 8 hours.
Damian was already moving. Pants on. Gun in holster. Shirt. Vest.
All in under 60 seconds.
"Pack a bag," he said. "We’re leaving in 5."
"Where are we going?"
"To get my son."
#### *3:20 AM. In the Car.*
He drove like a man possessed.
No sirens. No lights. Just pure speed through empty NYC streets.
I sat in the passenger seat. Bag in my lap. Heart in my throat.
"Is Noah okay?"
"Yes. He’s with my head of security at the school. 24/7 since yesterday."
"Then why—"
"Because Marco doesn’t want to kill him," Damian cut me off. "He wants to trade him. For you."
The words hit me.
For me.
"Don’t," Damian said, like he read my mind. "Don’t you dare think about going."
"I wasn’t—"
"Liar," he snapped. "I can see it on your face. Aria, listen to me. If you go, we both lose. He’ll kill you, and then he’ll kill Noah anyway."
I nodded. Tears stinging. "Okay. Okay. No trading."
He reached over. Squeezed my hand once. Hard.
"Good girl."
We pulled up to Riverside Elementary at 3:45 AM.
It was dark. Quiet. 2 black SUVs parked out front.
Four men got out as soon as we stopped. All armed.
"Boss," the lead one said. "No sign of trouble. Kid’s asleep in the headmaster’s office."
Damian was already out. "Show me."
#### *4:00 AM. Headmaster’s Office.*
Noah was asleep on a couch.
Small. 5 years old. Hair messy. Clutching a stuffed bear.
He looked exactly like Damian. Same jaw. Same dark hair.
But his face was soft. Innocent.
Damian’s entire body changed when he saw him.
The mafia king. The CEO. Gone.
In his place was just a dad.
He knelt next to the couch. Didn’t wake him. Just watched.
"Hey buddy," he whispered.
Noah stirred. Opened his eyes.
"Dad?"
"Hey." Damian brushed hair from his forehead. "I’m sorry. We have to go somewhere."
Noah sat up. Rubbed his eyes. Then he saw me.
He frowned. "Who are you?"
Damian looked at me. Then back at Noah.
"This is Aria. She’s... she’s helping us."
"Helping with what?" Noah asked. Smart kid. Too smart.
"With bad guys," Damian said simply. "Remember how we talked about bad guys?"
Noah nodded. He looked at me again. Suspicious. "Are you his girlfriend?"
I choked. "No. I’m—"
"She’s family," Damian interrupted. Firm. "That’s all you need to know right now."
Family.
The word echoed.
Noah studied me for a long moment. Then he shrugged and held out his arms to his dad.
"Carry me. I’m sleepy."
Damian picked him up. No hesitation. Like he weighed nothing.
"Let’s go, kiddo."
#### *6:00 AM. New Safehouse. Uptown.*
This one was bigger. More guards. Bunker doors.
Damian set Noah down in a room with toys, a TV, and no windows.
"Stay here with Marcus," Damian told him. "And Aria. Okay?"
Noah crossed his arms. "I want to stay with you."
"I know. But Daddy has to work. Bad guy stuff. Remember?"
Noah looked at me. "Will you stay with me?"
I glanced at Damian. He nodded.
"Yeah," I said. "I’ll stay."
Damian kissed the top of Noah’s head. "Be good. I’ll be back soon."
Then he pulled me into the hallway.
"Listen," he said. His voice was low, urgent. "I’m calling in everyone. We’re going to end this tonight. But until then, you do NOT leave this room. You do NOT open the door. You do NOT answer the phone."
"I understand."
"If anything happens—"
"Nothing will happen," I said. I grabbed his tie. Pulled him down. Kissed him.
Quick. Desperate.
"Come back," I whispered against his lips. "To him."
He closed his eyes. "Always."
Then he was gone.
#### *9:00 AM - 10:30 AM. The Waiting.*
It was hell.
Noah played with legos. I sat on the floor and tried to act normal.
Every 5 minutes Marcus would come in. "All clear."
Every 5 minutes my phone would buzz. No messages. Just news alerts.
_Gunfire reported in Midtown._
_Police presence at docks._
_Blackwood Enterprises denies involvement._
At 10:45, the door opened.
Not Marcus.
Damian.
He looked wrecked. Shirt torn. Knuckles bleeding again. But he was smiling.
It’s over.
Noah ran to him. "Dad!"
Damian picked him up. Spun him once. "Hey kiddo. Wanna go home?"
For the first time in 24 hours, I could breathe.
#### *11:30 AM. Back at the Penthouse.*
Everything was normal. Like nothing happened.
Sunlight. Coffee. Noah watching cartoons.
Damian came into the kitchen where I was making sandwiches.
He wrapped his arms around me from behind.
"It’s done," he murmured into my hair. "Marco’s in police custody. Tried to run. Didn’t make it."
I turned in his arms. "You’re sure?"
"I’m sure," he said. "No more running. No more hiding."
He looked down at me. Really looked.
"Thank you," he said. "For not leaving. For staying with him."
I smiled. "That’s what family does."
His jaw ticked. "Family."
"Yeah," I said. "On paper. And off."
He kissed me then.
Not slow. Not careful.
Deep. Claiming. Like he was done pretending.
When we pulled apart, Noah was standing in the doorway.
Eating a sandwich. Watching us.
"Are you guys kissing?" he asked.
Damian didn’t let go of me. "Yeah, buddy. We are."
"Is she gonna be my new mom?"
The room went silent.
Damian looked at me. Question in his eyes.
I nodded. Once.
He looked back at Noah. "I don’t know yet, kid. But I’d like that. Would you?"
Noah thought about it. Then shrugged. "She makes good sandwiches. And she didn’t scream when the guns went off. So... yeah. Okay."
Damian laughed. A real, full laugh.
And pulled both of us into a hug.
#### *9:00 PM. Later that night.*
Noah was asleep. Finally.
Damian and I were on the balcony. Blanket over both of us. City lights below.
"No more contracts," he said.
"No more contracts," I agreed.
"No more mistakes," he added.
I bumped his shoulder. "Speak for yourself. I’m planning to make a lot more."
He turned. Caught my face in his hands.
"I love you, Aria Hale."
"Blackwood," I corrected, smiling.
"Blackwood," he said. "I love you, Aria Blackwood."
And kissed me under the stars.
For once, there were no guns.
No Marco.
No fear.
Just us.
