Intermission- Just Live a little

(Read author’s note before continuing…) “Two more hours and we’ll be at our new home.” Matthew smiled grabbing my leg. “Finally.” I leaned over kissing his cheek. I was taken aback by how different California was compared to the creaky south. It was refreshing seeing the palm trees and bright blue sky. As I peered out the window I could spot a large body of water with dozens of people communing around it. “I can’t remember the last time I took a swim. Better yet, I don’t know if I ever have outside of taking a bath.” I pouted knowing Matthew never really wanted me going to lake back home. I think he was scared some magical force would take me back to wherever I came from. “Do you want to?” He hesitantly asked. “Really?!” I looked back at him excitedly as he parked the car. I quickly removed my sweater and jeans to Matthew’s surprise. “You know I could run to a shop and get you a bathing—” before he could finished I ran into the water in nothing but a tank top and panties. I submerged myself as my body moved with the sparkling waves. Every single worry, painful experience, and bad memory immediately disappeared as I was now one with the only thing I knew; before I knew anything about this world. I didn’t feel the need to breath as the water filtered through my lungs like I was meant to be here. The healing was practically instant and my mind was clearer than ever. Eventually, I could hear a voice which was strange being that I was under the water. I opened my eyes and it was almost like I’d been teleported. I couldn’t see any swimmers and was completely alone. Though I wasn’t scared, I could still hear the voice, and it was growing louder. I could make out someone in the distance swimming towards me. They looked human but ‘different’ at the same time. As they grew closer I could tell it was a woman of sorts. She reminded me of the image I saw at the library. Only this time she was smiling, almost happy. ‘Do I know you?’ I said to myself but they heard me. She stopped then nodded in response. We were now arms length apart. Her body look fish like but still sensual like a woman. She didn’t speak but her soft voice still rang in my ear. I reach out to touch her and her hand mirrored mine. Before we could meet a force began pulling me away from her and I desperately kept reaching for her. She was now sad and quickly swam away in fear. “Hey what-” I shouted as a man was pulling me out of the water in a panic. He laid me down and I was confused only to realize how much time had gone by. “Are you okay miss?” He was breathing heavily thinking I had drowned. I nodded my head and turned to Matthew who didn’t know how to address the situation. “You were under there for like 10 minutes.” He checked his watch in concern. I stuttered my words trying to explain but Matthew quickly stopped me “Oh yeah, she was just practicing for the…Olympics.” He explained sloppily. “The Olympics?” He questioned. I could feel people staring at me which became extremely awkward. The lifeguard, I presumed, then looked impressed but still worried. “Try not to avoid the deep end. Almost gave me a heart attack.” He patted me on the shoulder with a sigh. I got up and quickly wrapped myself with a random towel. “Guess that wasn’t a good idea.” Matthew whispered as we left the beach. “Yeah let’s just go.” I held him close for warmth. As we got to the car, I looked back at the water pondering if what I saw was real or just my imagination. Either way I knew this wouldn’t be the first or last time seeing her. Whatever ‘she’ was. ~~~ Support a young writer ^-^ $Alexandrianalls
