I took a step away from him. It just occurred to me that this man might be a guard that the Alpha kept in place to bring me back to the castle.
“How do you know the Alpha?”
“Are you afraid? Worried I’ve been sent by the Alpha to bring you back?”
“Can you read minds?”
I took another step backwards, I was ready to run away as fast as I could.
“It’s impossible to read minds, I just read your face, your emotions are written all over”
“How do you know the Alpha?”
“Let’s just say I’m the person that knows Cole more than anyone in this realm”
“Who is Cole?”
He had a shocked look on his face, though it was slowly turning into laughter.
“Please tell me you aren’t being serious right now. You don’t know your husband’s name?”
He burst into intense laughter. It felt contagious and soon after, I joined in on the laughter.
“You’re right, it really is stupid that I didn’t know the name of my own husband”
After a moment of laughter, silence surrounded us
“I thought you were on your way home”
“You’re right. I was but, I feel like there’s some drama at home and I’d like to avoid that”
“Strict father?”
“Strict older brother. He always gets on my nerves, always treats me like I’m not good enough”
“Oh, I’m awfully sorry about that. I see why you’re roaming in the woods now”
“That’s not really the reason. I love the woods, the quietness gives me-“
“Peace”
We both said it at the same time. He looked at me and smiled, I smiled back at him and I could feel myself blushing.
“I don’t feel like going home either”
“Well then Reia, would you like to see something cool?”
“Of course, I probably won’t get this chance again so why not”
“Walk close to me, I wouldn’t want the Queen getting lost on my watch”
“You could just hold my hand then?”
“That doesn’t sound like a bad idea”
As he intertwined his fingers with mine, I felt the warmth of the his hand. There was something mysterious about this man, something I just didn’t understand.
As we walked through the woods, I became talkative, bringing up different conversation topics. He didn’t talk much, he only threw responses at me but I could tell that he didn’t hate it.
Boldy he walked through the woods with my hand in his, it felt like he knew each and everywhere. He was navigating without a map.
“Where did you travel to?”
“I had to defend my people in the war. I was needed on the frontlines of war”
This made my ears ring and I separated my hands from his immediately. Could it be that the werewolves were still killing my people despite my staying here?
“What do you mean by ‘defend my people?”
“Relax, Reia. We are no longer fighting against the humans”
“Then who are you fighting against?”
“Just as human nations have conflicts with each other, different werewolf packs often fight against each other”
“What is the reason for the dispute, why are you fighting between yourselves?”
“Not every wolf pack agreed to the peace between our races. Some want to keep fighting till one part is eventually wiped off the face of this world”
“That sounds scary”
“It is, but not to worry. Everything is in control”
“Are you like a warrior or something? You fight for the king right?”
“Yes, you could put it like that”
I held his hand again and we continued walking. We got to a point and he told me to stop
“We are here”
“Where is here exactly?”
“I was brought here by my mother when I was a child, I’ve loved it ever since”
This place was no different from the other part of the forest, tall trees and some fallen trees.
“You asked if I wanted to see something cool, is this really the place?”
“It is, just show a little bit of patience, come on”
I quietly followed him and we hid behind the trunk of a huge tree. I was getting worried because this part of the forest was very dark. How was I sure I could trust this man with my life. The worry of being harmed overwhelmed me.
“It’s starting, watch”
Butterflies started flying everywhere, they were colored and beautiful. I couldn’t contain my joy, tears rolled down my face.
“I’ve never seen such a beautiful thing before, where did they come from?”
“Nobody knows where they come from. No one else knows of this place. My mother showed me, and now I am showing you”
“Thank you, thank you for showing me something so beautiful. I love it, they’re so pretty”
“They’re shy, if they see us they’ll go into hiding”
“I’d like to come here again but I’m not sure I’ll be able to find my way here”
“That’s fine, I can bring you here again sometime if you’d want”
“Really? I’d like that”
“He looked up at the clouds above us”
“Reia, you have to go home. The sun is setting. Br- I mean the king will send people out for you if it gets too late”
“I don’t know my way back to the castle”
“I’ll take you, if you want me to”
“Yes please. Although I’d hate to go back to that place, I understand that I am doing this for my people”
“You’re really a kind person, I admire that”
He fell on one need and asked me to get on his back. He jumped through the tall trees till we got to the front of the castle.
“I had fun today, I’d like to to this again”
“So do I, I have to go now though”
Turned around to walk back into the forest.
“Wait! I never got your name”
“I’ll give you my n
ame on our next meeting”
I stood, smiling as he walked into the forest.
