Chapter 8

Caroline’s POV “I'll see you soon babe. You have no idea how much I’ve missed you.” Caroline hung up the phone. Once she had gotten into town she thanked Ivy and Ryan once more as they drove to the nearest hotel and made her way to the local library to use their phone to call Klaus. Understandably, he freaked out. After calming him down with the promise of explaining everything in person, Klaus agreed to come and pick her up. Thankfully, he was close by already, so it wouldn’t be too much of a wait. The sun had just set when she stepped into town. Getting agitated, she decided to wait inside the library till Klaus arrived. After an hour passed, she saw headlights streaming in through the sliding glass doors. The librarian was bristling with impatience for her to leave and eagerly walked over to unlock the doors for him. Klaus stood scanning the computer desks nearby for her. Green eyes locked on hers as he rushed towards her. Picking her up, he swung her around in a big circle. Tears streamed down her face as she laughed with joy and relief. “Let's get you home.” He whispered while snuggling into her neck. Nodding her head, she held her hand and followed him out to his car. She thanked the librarian once more, who grumbled as she locked up the library once more. Climbing into the blue Subaru Forester, she settled into the familiar seat and relaxed. She was safe and back where she belonged. As they drove through the hills, Caroline and Klaus talked about everything that had happened in the last couple of months. Besides asking a few clarification questions, he stayed silent as she talked. Like a snowball effect, once she started she couldn’t stop till she reached the ritual the previous night. Stopping with a sob, she went quiet and peeked over at Klaus to gauge his reaction. His hands gripped the steering wheel so hard his knuckles started to turn white. The muscle on the side of his jaw was tense and he seemed on edge. “Are you OK, Klaus?” “Am I OK?” He seethed. “No Caroline, I am not OK. You were kidnapped by f*****g vampires. Did anything else happen to you? Were you fed on? Did they turn you?” Shaking her head, “No they didn’t turn me. They ummm…they wanted to ummm use me as a breeder.” She whispered it so quietly hoping that he wouldn’t hear the last part. Alas, he had heard. Slamming on the brakes hard made the tires screech as they tried to gain traction. The car twisted sideways as it came to an abrupt stop. “THEY WHAT?” he bellowed. Cowering back in her seat, Caroline stared at him, her eyes gone wide with fear. She had never seen Klaus this way before. Anger was not an emotion he had often displayed and he had never lost control before. It frightened her. Seeing how scared she looked, Klause started apologizing immediately. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry just the thought of those creatures violating you got me so upset.” Silence stretched as tears slid down her face. Realizing that Klaus would hate her if he knew that not only did she have s*x with a vampire, but it was The Vampire Lord and she enjoyed it. “Looking down at her clasped hands she waited for him to ask. After a few quiet moments, he spoke again, this time in a much more gentle tone. “I won't ask you what happened in that castle. Just know I will not judge you or think less of you for doing anything you needed to do to survive and get back to me. I love you and I can wait till you are ready to tell me what happened.” Sobbing now, for she didn’t know what she did to have such a man as Klaus in her life, she reached over and wrapped her arms around his neck. Sobbing on his shoulder while he patted her back gently, they stayed like that till she calmed down. “Ok love, let's get you back home.” He turned the car back onto the road and continued south to Greenshire. Yawning loudly, she heard Klaus chuckle. “Go ahead and sleep, you've earned it. Leaning her head against the headrest, her eyes fluttered close. The bumpy road caused Caroline to hit her head on the window. “Ow,” she winced as she started to rub the sore spot. “Where are we? What time is it?” She could see the sun starting to crest over the mountains. “It's 7 A.M. you slept through the rest of the drive. We are north of Greenshire and should be seeing it soon. Eagerly, she looked out the window hoping to catch a glance of her home. “Can we stop by your house first? I want to see Stevers. Thank you again for taking care of him when I was missing.” Chuckling, he reached out and took her hand gently. “Of course we can see your pup first. I don’t want to leave you alone anyway, so why don’t we just grab some clothes and other things you'll need from your house and you can stay at my house for a while?” Looking up at him, she thought it over. Being alone right now didn’t really sit right with her either, so she agreed, but first she wanted to see her baby again. She had been so worried about what might have happened to her dog that he was all she could think about for the first week at the castle. Relief flooded through her when Klaus had told her he had woken up the morning after she had been taken to her yellow lab scratching at his back door. That’s what had clued him in that something had happened to her. Taking in her pup had been no hardship and in the last two months the two of them had really bonded. Klaus loved the dog almost as much as he loved Caroline. It still baffled him that the rumors were true after all. Everyone knew vampires and other supernatural beings existed, but no one from Greenshire had ever seen one before. Klaus did recall that a couple of days ago Faith, Caroline’s sister from Solitude Township, had called and said some strange man with an accent had come and talked to her about doing a story on local heritage. Faith lived quietly up in the mountains on her property and was known as the town's historian, so it wasn’t so implausible that a stranger stopped by. It was just odd enough for Faith to call Klaus and let him know just in case it tied in with her sister’s disappearance. At the time he didn’t think much of the stranger. Now, though, Klaus had doubts. Maybe it was a vampire trying to learn more about Caroline’s family history because of the breeding thing because..what was it called again Vampire Lord? He thought that was the correct term. Yeah, maybe he was checking genetics or something. Why they wanted Caroline in the first place was a mystery to Klaus. All he wanted to do now was to protect her and keep her safe from them. A sudden chill washed down his spine as he drove around the last curve and home came into view. If they had gone and seen her sister, then they most definitely knew where she lived. Excitedly, Caroline rolled down the window so she could feel the cool breeze of home on her face. Meanwhile, Klaus was rapidly thinking of a way to keep her safe. They would have to move, and not tell anyone where they were going. New identities will have to be acquired. Thankfully, he had a friend in Great Oaks City that could help with that. Giving him a call, as soon as he could, just jumped in priorities. Pulling into his driveway, he walked around the car and opened the door for Caroline. Smiling up at him, she took his hand and stepped down. Following behind, she waited for him to unlock the door. Admiring the leaves changing on the red oak tree in his front yard. The red color blooming on the green leaves was mesmerizing. Hearing a familiar bark, she snapped back to the door just in time to see her yellow lab Stevers come bounding out to jump on her. Falling down on her ass, she laughed while wrapping her arms around the dog.
