Chapter 13

Klaus’ POV: “Oh you didn’t know?” The red headed punk looking man continued to look at Caroline. I couldn’t believe what I had heard. A siren? Didn’t those go extinct hundred of years ago? How could Caroline be a siren if they were all gone? He walked over to her and gave her hand a squeeze of reassurance. Whoever this guy was had to be wrong. She couldn’t be a siren. Caroline looked up at him with worry all over her face and leaned a bit against him. Thoughts of needing to protect her from everything threatened to overwhelm him again. He didn’t even like the thought of other men looking at her and really hadn’t liked when Rich was flirting with her earlier. He tugged gently on her arm trying to pull her behind him as the strange man kept eyeing her. The man looked up at him sharply and took a black piece of glass and started staring at him with it. He jerked back unnerved at being the object of this guy's attention. The man walked closer and started circling him and Caroline now. He pulled her further behind him even though she kept trying to tug her arm free. He just wanted to keep her from this guy who was acting strange is all. “I see you’re under her call aren’t you?” The guy asked after he stopped circling them. “What do you mean Tristian?” Rich asked the man that had been circling them. “I mean just that, Rich. It looks like Klaus here is under Caroline’s siren call.” He said with a slight wave of his hand. “I can see a thread of power connecting them. It’s still weak so it’s recent and still easily breakable if we take the necessary steps soons.” “Wait. Wait. Wait. Hold up.” Caroline said, stepping out from behind him and prying his fingers off her arm. “What do you mean I'm a siren? What is a siren? And how is Klaus under my spell when I haven’t done any magic since escaping?” She asked. I waited to see what he would say while fighting the urge to pull her back into a hug. Tristan glanced between Caroline and myself and looked like he was considering what he should say next. He nodded and said “Let’s all sit down in the living room and talk things out. It looks like I have a lot to explain and I have some questions to ask too.” The four of them moved over to the various couches and sat down. Klaus sat in the loveseat next to Caroline holding her hand. Tristan perched upon the couch again and Rich took a seat on what looked like a handmade wooden stool. “So you were saying?” I said waving for Tristian to continue. “Ahem.” He cleared his throat before starting to explain. “So like I said Caroline is a Siren. They were nearly wiped out about 150 years ago during a war with vampires. Sirens aren’t like in legends they aren’t part bird or fish. Instead they have…let’s say, an appeal to them. They make others, regardless of species, desire them. From what I hear it’s even more intense with vampires. The longer someone is around a siren the more obsessive they can become.” He gestured as he spoke and looked pointedly at me with that last statement making me squirm a little in my seat. I had been feeling a bit possessive over Caroline since picking her up a few nights ago. “Thankfully sirens can control their allure with practice and turn it off or on if they want.” Tristian continued. “How can I learn to do that?’ Caroline asked, leaning forward slightly in her seat. The eagerness in her voice was plain to everyone in the room. “I’m gonna get us all some drinks.” Rich said while getting up and moving to the kitchen. “I’m not sure exactly how but I can teach you how to control your magic properly which should work for the siren call as well.” Tristan replied with a slight shrug. “You guys have only been together for a few days right?” “Yes, that's right. I picked her up 3 nights ago.” I replied nodding my head. “Ok good. Then you shouldn’t be too far under her call then. Have you been noticing any possessive feelings towards her?” He asked while giving me his full attention. Even Caroline looked over at me waiting for what I would say. “Ummm yeah. Actually I started feeling that way once we got back to her house and were packing up. It’s been getting worse. Especially when we are around others.” I explained looking at my feet. Caroline gave my hand a slight squeeze and when I looked at her she gave me a soft smile. “I see. Well we can still fix that. Here” Tristan handed me one of the necklaces that had been around his own neck. “This charm will help keep you safe from all mind control or emotional manipulation spells.” Reaching out for the purple crystal pendant necklace I felt a sense of calm over take me as soon as my hand touched the cool stone. “Thank you, what kind of crystal is this?” Staring at the pendant brought peace. I just didn’t know what type it was. “It’s amethyst. It’s great for psychic defense. Make sure to keep that on you at all times until Caroline here learns to control her powers fully.” He lectured wagging his finger at me like an old professor scolding a student that had misbehaved. Chuckling a bit I slipped the pendant over my neck where it seemed to catch the light for a second. A weight felt like it had been lifted off my chest and I looked over at Caroline to see her watching me intently. “Well?” She asked. “Do you feel any different?” Looking at her all I could feel is the love I’ve always had for her and not the strange obsessive feelings that I felt a few minutes ago. “I think it’s working. I feel a lot better actually.” I smiled back at her and looked towards Tristian. “Can you tell us more about siren’s in general? I have a feeling it’s going to be important.” “Ok here we go. Tristan, here's your special tea and I made the rest of us some chamomile. I figured we could all use something to help us relax.” Rich said while coming in with four mugs and setting them all done in front of us. Each cup and steam came up announcing that their contents were too hot to drink. “Ok so what did I miss?” Tristan filled him in quickly while waving his hand over his own mug. He took a sip of his tea before I could warn him it was too hot. Seeing my face Tristan let out a laugh and explained. “I absorbed the heat from my tea so it would be cool enough for me to drink. So don’t worry, I'm not burning my mouth.” “Ok so I don’t know much more about siren’s but what I do remember is that they are powerful. Basically anyone or anything will fall for their charms as long as they aren’t ACE. With vampires though it's a bit different.” He took a pause to sip his tea once more and seemed to gather his thoughts. “From what I've read, sirens and vampires have unique effects on one another. We all know about enthrallments that vampires can perform with certain mysterious rituals right?” I was confused but I did vaguely remember hearing about that on the news along with a warning to stay inside during certain moon events. Whatever that was. Caroline looked conflicted about something until she finally spoke up. “It's the blood moon ritual. It’s an occurrence that happens every 10 years. It involves a blood exchange.” She whispered. Tristian sat up straight looking eagerly at Caroline as she spoke. “You’ve seen the ritual?” He whispered to her. She nodded curtly, seemingly not wanting to elaborate further.
