Chapter 3

1655 Words
Caroline’s POV: Light filtered in through the window as the door opened and a plate was placed on the floor next to her where she had collapsed and cried herself to sleep the night before. The servant tsked and woke her up by roughly shaking her shoulder. “Your breakfast is here, do you need anything else?” The servant asked while straightening herself up and looking around the room. Sitting up Caroline looked at the food that was on the silver plate and felt her stomach grumble in hunger. Remembering that she had barely eaten the night before and then all the stress and anxiety of dealing with Zatracení caused her to feel famished. Mixed fresh fruit with some bread lightly toasted on the side was what was for breakfast today. All of it looked so good, especially the grapes. Green grapes were some of her favorite snacks back home she used to put them in the freezer in summer time. “This looks wonderful, thank you so much.” Caroline smiled up at the servant who curiously blushed and mumbled something she couldn’t quite catch. The girl left, closing the door swiftly behind her and Caroline shrugged off the weird interaction and began to eat. Once she was done eating she left the plate on the small sitting table that was near her bed and went to freshen up in the attached bathroom. The bathroom was modest size with only a shower, toilet, and sink. She would have killed to take an actual bath again to help relieve her stress. Sighing at the wistful thoughts of home she took a quick shower. Coming out she wrapped a towel around herself and looked around the bedroom that was assigned to her two months ago that has now become even more of a prison. The plush carpets were a deep rich red that matched the heavy drapes that framed the large window. The window overlooked the cliffside to the stormy sea below. The bed had luxurious bedding in black with several pillows in a royal purple color. The Vampire Lords crest was embroidered onto each of the pillows in a silver thread that shone when the sunlight hit them. Walking over to the standing wardrobe she opened the doors to see what her options were. Changing into a clean blue dress she wiped the stray tears that crept down her face. All she wanted was to go back home. She wanted her clothes, her bathroom, her home. Why did all of this have to happen to her. Depression clawed at her and she felt herself starting to spiral down. Quickly she took a few slow deep breaths and shoved those thoughts aside. This was not the time nor the place to allow that kind of thinking to take over. Once she was out of here and safe she would allow herself to break down. A half smile formed on her lips at the thought of binge watching her favorite show with a bottle of wine and finally being free of this place. Deciding to test the security placed on her door she tried the handle first. Locked. Of course it is. Grabbing a few hairpins from the bathroom drawer she tried her luck at picking the locks. As soon as she put the first one in she dropped it, yelping in surprise. Looking down at the melted twisted piece of metal that was cooling back to a dull gray from the cherry red it was a new sense of dread settled on her. Ok plan B lets try magic. Not knowing the exact spell for lock picking Caroline decided to force open the lock with brute force. Gathering as much power as she could she honed it into a point and blasted it at the door. The explosion knocked her back onto her ass and knocked the wind out of her. Coughing and wincing as even that hurt she slowly sat up and looked at the door. Smoke wisped up from the lock but other than that the door remained unscathed. Sighing in disappointment she slowly got to her feet wincing at every movement. Taking inventory of herself she found that her back hurt from hitting the ground hard, and the back of her head seemed bruised but she couldn’t detect any signs of a concussion. A quick knock on the door was the only warning before Spálený barged in looking frantic. “What happened?” He demanded. Looking at him in surprise Caroline didn’t respond. “Are you hurt anywhere? I don’t smell blood on you but is anything broken?” The barrage of questions left her uneasy. Quickly denying any injury she tried reassured him that she was fine. “What were you even trying to do anyways?” “She was trying to break the lock with her magic.” Came the reply from the doorway. She looked over at him, startled that he was even there during the day time. Zatracení leaned against the door frame with his arms crossed watching Spálený question her. Watching the two of them closely he made his way over to Caroline and lifted her chin. Her hazel eyes met his blue ones as they stared at each other. Uneasiness filled her as he continued to stare down at her. He leaned forward and seemed to sniff at her. She tried to take a step back but he wouldn’t let go of her chin. A sudden hissing sound came from Spálený and made both of them turn their heads to look at him. His fangs were exposed as his lips were pulled back into a snarl. His whole body was tense like he was preparing to attack. Taking the opportunity she had she finally jerked her chin out of his grasp as she rubbed her jaw to ease the soreness he caused. Spálený looked down and wouldn’t meet Zatracení eyes. He shifted his weight from foot to foot looking extremely uncomfortable. She wasn’t sure why he had hissed and bared his fangs like he had but she was grateful for the distraction. “Are you ok?” Zatracení asked. Was he serious? How could she possibly be ok when she was being held against her will? Anger fueled her response and her words came out far more harshly then she would normally ever dare. “Why do you care? All you need me for is breeding. My comfort should be of little concern to you.” She replied out of anger and frustration. Why was he even here? Why did he ask that in that tone? Looking at him she saw him stiffen at her words and his eyes got an angry look in them. Uh oh now she had done it. What would he do to her now? “Don’t try and do anything that stupid again. Got it?” He told her while glaring. “If you do, I'll have no choice but to tie you to the bed with guards inside the room to watch you until the ritual tomorrow evening. Do you understand me?” Gulping in fear because she knew this was no idle threat she nodded as he turned and left the room only stopping to signal Spálený to follow him and to reseal the door. Dumbfounded by the sudden appearance and disappearance Of the Vampire Lord Caroline did nothing but stand and watch as the door closed behind him. Zatracení POV: Once back to his office Zatracení had Spálený explain his reaction. “I’m sorry my Lord. I know she’s your favorite. I don’t know what came over me, I beg your forgiveness.” He groveled bowing low in submission. “Enough I just want to know why you hissed a warning at me. What was the reason?” Spálený shifted uneasily from foot to foot until he reluctantly said. “In truth my Lord I didn’t like that you were so close to her.” Taken aback Zatracení stared at one of his closest friends and best assassin. “What do you mean by that?” “It is as I said Zatracení. I had a protective..no almost obsessive feeling towards her. I didn’t like how close you were to her or that her eyes were on you.” Choosing his next words carefully, Spálený continued. “It’s almost like I actually was worried for her wellbeing and not just because you ordered me to watch her. I don’t understand it myself fully.” This was serious. Now there are two vampires that are developing feelings for her. But why? Why now? “There’s something going on with Caroline Odporný is investigating her, but we already don’t think she’s fully human. She somehow seems to get Vampires to develop feelings for her. To stop this from spreading I want limited contact with her until the ritual. Noone opens her door except a female servant just to be on the safe side.” “You think she can’t affect other females?” “I don’t know but it’s worth a shot at this point. Hopefully whatever she turns out to be will be nullified once the ritual is complete.” “As you wish, Zatracení.” Spálený replied while bowing his head in respect as he left the room. Zatracení put his head in his hands and tried to think this whole situation through. This is getting more complicated by the minute. Noticing how high the sun has gotten he decided to wait till that night to look into this further. Stripping down to his boxers for sleep, his thoughts constantly were drawn back to Caroline. What are you? Was the last thought he had before falling deeply asleep on his red silk sheets. His dreams were of blood, death, and Caroline standing serenely in a meadow, her belly round with their child and a soft smile on her face.
