Chapter 8:Safe Haven

366 Words
The library had never felt so alive. It wasn’t buzzing with noise or energy — no, it was still as quiet and hushed as always. But sitting at the far end of the third-floor reading room, where the sunlight slipped through tall windows, were Jenny and Jeff, side by side. And that little corner felt like the safest place on campus. Jenny wasn’t used to this kind of quiet. Not the awkward kind that demanded small talk or masks. This was a comfortable quiet — a safe silence that didn’t ask her to perform or protect. Just to be. Jeff had his laptop open, fingers flying over the keys, probably finishing one of his overly detailed lab reports. Jenny sat beside him, leaning into his warmth, occasionally highlighting lines in her printed notes — though she hadn’t turned a page in twenty minutes. Her mind wasn’t on organic chemistry. It was on the soft smile Jeff gave her every time he caught her staring. “You’re not reading anything,” he murmured without looking up. Jenny grinned. “I’m studying your concentration.” Jeff chuckled. “That doesn’t count as prep for your test.” “I’m doing my best.” Their shoulders bumped gently, and she laughed under her breath. It surprised even her how light she felt with him. Like she could finally let her guard down and trust that someone would hold her. Later that evening, they took a slow walk back to the hostel gates. Jeff carried both their bags — Jenny pretended to protest, but secretly she loved it. Halfway there, she stopped walking. He turned to her. “You good?” Jenny looked up at him with something different in her eyes. Not pride. Not fear. Just softness. “I’m really glad I didn’t let you go,” she said, voice quiet, sincere. Jeff tilted his head. “So am I.” There were no fireworks, no dramatic music. Just two people in the middle of a quiet road, hearts open, hands brushing as they started walking again. In that moment, Jenny realized something. Love didn’t have to be wild and stormy all the time. Sometimes, it was just… safe.
