Chapter 2: Jeff's Safe Space

477 Words
Jeff adjusted his headphones as he walked toward the university’s main gate, his steps slow and deliberate. Music had always been his shield from the noise of the world — not just the literal noise, but the chaos of expectations, comparisons, and conversations he never knew how to start. He had noticed Jenny the moment she walked into class. Everyone had. But Jeff noticed her differently — not because of her walk, or her boldness, or the way she had claimed the front row like it belonged to her. What struck him was the sadness he saw flicker in her eyes for just a second before she masked it with that signature confidence. He recognized that sadness. He carried it too. Unlike Jenny, Jeff didn’t walk like the world belonged to him. In fact, he did everything he could to go unnoticed. He preferred the back row, the side paths, and the quiet corners. His comfort zone was his mind — filled with formulas, music, and poetry he never showed anyone. That old, battered notebook in his backpack wasn’t for schoolwork; it held his true thoughts. Thoughts about pain, dreams, people… and lately, a girl with fierce eyes and a voice that didn’t shake. Jeff had always been the quiet one, the "nerd" in every room. His love for chemistry wasn’t just academic — it was symbolic. He liked to understand how things bonded, how separate elements could come together to form something stronger. Maybe that’s why, when he saw Jenny, she didn’t intimidate him. She intrigued him. His safe space was a small, hidden garden behind the science faculty. Not many students knew about it, and those who did rarely visited. There, surrounded by overgrown leaves and half-bloomed flowers, Jeff could breathe. That afternoon, after leaving the cafeteria, he found himself drawn back to the garden. He sat on the familiar bench under the jacaranda tree, pulled out his notebook, and began to write: > “She walks like she owns gravity, Like the earth tilts in her favor. But I saw the storm behind her eyes — I wonder who calms her thunder.” He paused and stared at the lines. Jenny. He hadn’t even spoken a word to her, and yet, she’d already made it into his writing. Back in class, he had noticed how she glanced around, how she locked eyes with him briefly before looking away. Most people would’ve ignored him entirely. But she didn’t. And that was... something. He closed the notebook and leaned back, letting the breeze ruffle his shirt. Maybe she wouldn’t remember him. Maybe she would. But Jeff wasn’t in a rush. He believed in quiet connections — the kind that start unnoticed and grow steadily, like roots beneath the soil. And if fate was feeling generous, maybe one day, she’d find her way into his safe space.
