Chapter 7
It was getting late, but Keplar had enough time to make a quick tour around town. Driving down Humbolt Avenue, he saw three young boys fighting. Two of them had the third on the ground. One was laying on top of the boy hitting him over and over. Keplar pulled over, hit his siren once, and rushed over to the boys. They were in the outfield of a small homemade baseball field. By the time he got to them, two of the boys began to run off. It only took a minute to chase them down and grab them both by the nape of the neck. He then dragged them back to where the third boy was still laying on the ground. Bending over to check on him, he said, “You two stay put.” Then he found the boy crying and trying to sit up. “Are you okay?”
Through tears, he choked out, “Yeah, I want to go home.”
“Where do you live?”
Pointing across the field, “Over there.”
“Can you make it okay?”
“Tell your mom I’ll stop by after I bring these boys home.”
After he saw the three moms, he got it all ironed out.
It was close to six o’clock, so he called it a day and headed home.
Rose was waiting for him all dressed up and ready to go. Mick took her in his arms, “I thought we were having dessert first.”
“I decided it best to keep you waiting. There’s nothing like a little anticipation. Now get in there, take a shower, and get dressed.”
“Yes, sweetie, but I am a little disappointed.”
An hour later they were seated at an upscale restaurant in Crystal. After some light chatter, Rose said, “Keith was flirting with me today at work.”
“I could have Detective Knutson arrest him. Of course, I’d do it myself, but it’s out of my jurisdiction.” Smiling broadly, “I can’t really blame him. If I was in his place, I’d do the same. You are so beautiful. I’m surprised it doesn’t happen every day.”
“Well … it does happen from time to time,” Rose said teasingly.
For the next fifteen minutes they concentrated on their meal. When they were finished, Mick said, “It’s time to go home for dessert.”
“Indeed it is.”
