Chapter 26
Keplar stopped at a small diner on Seventh Avenue, after he had called Rose to meet him. She was tied up in a meeting, so he had to go it alone. Sitting alone, waiting to be served, he thought about how lucky he was and soon he would have a little boy to play with, at least that was his hope. If the baby turned out to be a girl, he reasoned, that might be even better if she turned out anything like her mother. With a worried look, he wondered how he would ever be able to let her go, when she grew up. Sitting back, still waiting, he pushed that thought aside and realized that his whole life had led to this moment. Even the war, that led him to being accepted as chief of police was worth it, since it led him to meeting Rose. “Life is good,” he mumbled to himself.
