Chapter 9Felicity couldn’t move. Her feet felt rooted to the ground. Her knees smarted and ached. Her arms were above her head and tingled from the angle. She glanced down at her body and saw black clothing marked with gold dust. Sand, she realized. She was buried up to her knees in sand, then bent backwards lying down, with her arms pin-wheeled above her head as if they had been shackled once but no longer remained so. She took several moments to coax her arms back to life before she struggled to kick her feet and felt herself slip in deeper. She froze. Her heart pounded in her chest. Is that a dream heart, she wondered, or is my heart really pounding like that? Is this a heart attack? No, she convinced herself. A dream. A dream heart for her dream self. She knew she was dreaming now.
