Chapter 7. Calm & Controlled Mind

2084 Words
Mia's sneakers made no sound as she hurried away from Master Dominic's room, her cleaning caddy rattling like a box of dry bones in her trembling hands. Her knees still felt weak, the plush texture of the red rug seemingly burned into her skin as a reminder of how close she had come to losing everything. Two days. She had only been in this monolithic hell for two days, and she had already been forced to her knees by one brother, cornered by another, and saved only by the rigid, calculated tyranny of the eldest. She turned a sharp corner, her eyes darting to the baseboard to confirm the tiny, etched maid marker pointing toward the far end of the residential wing. Next was Master Kane's quarters. Mia's throat tightened as she stood before the dark, unpainted concrete frame of the angry man's door. She knocked softly, her heart hammering against her ribs, but no sound came from within. With a shaky hand, she used her master key to push the door open. To her profound relief, the room was empty. Master Kane was likely downstairs with the guards or handling whatever brutal business kept his hands scarred. The space was exactly as it had been yesterday- smelling heavily of sweat, leather, and gun oil. A collection of serrated knives and tactical gear sat fully exposed on a steel workbench. Mia moved like a ghost, completely terrified of knocking over a single bullet casing or misplacing a leather strap. She scrubbed the dark, unpainted concrete floors, dusted the heavy iron weights in the corner, and wiped down the stark, practical furniture. She worked with an intense, humble efficiency, wanting nothing more than to erase any sign of her presence before the volatile brute returned. Within ten minutes, she had finished, packed her supplies, and backed out of the room, closing the heavy door with a soft, cautious click. Finally, she reached the apex of the residential wing. The massive double doors of solid black wood loomed before her. Master August's room. Mia paused, smoothing down the front of her stiff gray uniform. Her hands were still damp from the cleaning solutions, and her porcelain skin felt flushed. She remembered his lethal, quiet warning from earlier: If you remember your place, you live. If you forget it... She drew a deep, shuddering breath, knocked once on the heavy black wood, and slowly pushed the doors open. The room was vast, an immaculate sanctuary of absolute, terrifying order. The morning sun poured through the massive floor-to-ceiling window, illuminating the stark neutral palette of deep blacks, grays, and brilliant whites. There was no clutter. No discarded wrappers like Master Blake's room, no half-eaten delicacies like Master Luke's, and no cloying, suffocating cologne like Master Dominic's. It was a room that demanded absolute perfection. And sitting at the massive, pristine black desk in the center of the space was Master August Crowe. He was fully engrossed in his work, his sharp, handsome features perfectly focused as his long, elegant fingers sorted through a stack of high-grade, typed financial papers and legal documents. His black hair was perfectly styled, and his charcoal suit jacket was draped immaculately over the back of his leather chair. He didn't look up when the door opened, but the temperature in the room seemed to drop instantly. Mia felt the breath catch in her throat. She stepped into the room, gently rolling her caddy inside, and immediately dropped her head, her bright blue eyes fixed strictly on the dark, plush rug. "M-Master August," Mia murmured, her voice soft, sweet, and laced with a profound, trembling apology. "I am so incredibly sorry for the delay. I... I came as quickly as I could after finishing Master Dominic's quarters." August didn't answer immediately. He picked up a sleek silver pen, signing his name at the bottom of a document with a fluid, practiced motion, before neatly stacking the paper on top of a perfectly aligned pile. Only then did his piercing, ice-blue eyes slowly lift, locking onto her petite form with an intensity that made her knees feel like glass. "A delay is an inefficiency, Mia," August said, his voice a smooth, freezing baritone that carried the weight of absolute authority. "And I do not tolerate inefficiency in my household. However... I am aware of the nature of the distraction you faced. You are here now. Do your work." "Yes, Master August. Thank you for your leniency," Mia whispered humbly. She immediately went to work, keeping her eyes low and her movements as quiet as humanly possible. As Sheila had noted, Master August's room was already, for the most part, completely spotless. There was no real grime to scrub, no mess to clear. He lived with the precise, clinical order of a man who believed the world should bow to his standards. Mia moved toward a small, built-in dresser where a neatly folded stack of laundry had been delivered by the lower-level staff earlier that morning. Her small, pale hands carefully picked up the crisp white shirts and tailored pamts, placing them into the drawers exactly as Sheila had instructed- perfectly aligned, edges matching. August watched her out of the corner of his eye for a brief moment before returning his gaze to his papers. "You fold with precision," he noted idly, his tone completely detached, as if he were evaluating a machine. "Where did you learn to be so meticulous?" Mia flinched slightly at the sound of his voice, her fingers tightening on a silk tie. She swallowed hard, her inherent intelligence warning her to tread carefully. She couldn't mention her past, nor the quiet, orderly life she had built before everything went sideways. "I... I have always preferred things to be neat, Master August," Mia replied softly, keeping her voice humble and small. "I find that when the space around you is quiet and orderly, it keeps the mind calm. It is a habit I have kept for a very long time." August let out a short, quiet sound that was half a chuckle and completely devoid of warmth. He leaned back slightly in his leather chair, tapping the silver pen against his palm. "A calm mind is a controlled mind. Most people are chaotic, weak-willed creatures ruled by their base impulses. They leave messes wherever they go- logistical messes, emotional messes." He paused, his blue eyes narrowing slightly as he stared at the back of her head. "Like my brothers." Mia kept her back to him, carefully hanging a charcoal suit jacket in the massive walk-in closet. Her heart was beating rapidly, the sheer, crushing weight of his pride radiating across the room. He spoke of his own family as if they were lesser species, beneath his intellect. "Your brothers... they are very distinct individuals, Master August," Mia murmured carefully, choosing her words with extreme caution so as not to offend him. "They are flawed," August corrected smoothly, his voice leaving absolutely no room for debate. "They require a firm hand to keep them from tearing each other apart. Dominic is blinded by his appetites. Malachi is driven by a restless, pathetic need to possess what he hasn't earned. Kane is an attack dog who would burn the city down if I didn't hold his leash. They think they are powerful, but true power doesn't shout, Mia. True power doesn't fight for scraps. True power commands, and the world simply aligns itself to their will." Mia stepped out of the closet, picking up a soft microfiber cloth to wipe down the glass of the floor-to-ceiling window. She looked out over the sprawling, minimalistic estate, the high fences and armed guards visible in the distance. "And you are the one who aligns them, Master August?" she asked softly, the question slipping out before she could stop it. August turned his head fully toward her, his handsome face catching the bright morning light. A cold, deeply arrogant smile touched the corner of his lips. He didn't look angry that she had spoken; rather, he seemed to relish the absolute truth of her words. "I am the only one who can," August said, his tone dripping with an unshakeable, supreme confidence. "This family, this empire- it exists because I engineered it. Every contract Richie signs, every shipment Kane secures, every politician Dominic bribes... it is all a single piece on a board that I designed. Without me, they are nothing but street thugs waiting to be put in prison. I am the brain, the king, and the law. I do not lose, Mia. Ever." Mia felt a shiver run down her spine as she wiped the glass, her reflection looking small and fragile against the backdrop of his vast domain. The sheer, immense ego of the man was suffocating. He didn't just rule his brothers through fear; he ruled them because he genuinely believed he was a superior being, an untouchable force that could never be broken. "It must be a very heavy burden, Master August," Mia whispered, her voice carrying a faint, genuine touch of her inherent sweetness and empathy. "To hold so much responsibility entirely on your own." August's tapping pen stopped. He stared at her back, his icy blue eyes assessing her with a sudden, sharp curiosity. For a moment, the silence in the room was absolute, heavy enough to crush. "Responsibility is only a burden to those who fear failure," August said, his voice dropping to a low, lethal purr. He stood up from his desk, smoothing down his tailored vest, and walked slowly toward the window where she stood. "I do not fear failure because I do not allow it to exist as an option. You would do well to remember that, Mia. Your compliance today in Dominic's room was acceptable. You obeyed the house rules. But do not think for a second that because I intervened, I care about your well-being." Mia shrank back slightly against the glass, her bright blue eyes wide with panic as he stopped just two feet away from her. The scent of his expensive, crisp cologne washed over her, cold and clean. "I intervened because you belong to the household schedule," August continued, looking down at her porcelain face with a clinical, detached ownership. "You are an employee under my roof. Dominic's desires is a variable that threatens my schedule, and I eliminate variables. If you ever allow any of my brothers to disrupt my household efficiency again, the fault will lie with you. And as I said, I do not tolerate inefficiency." "I understand, Master August," Mia whispered, her lower lip trembling slightly as she dropped her head back down, her humble demeanor fully locked in place. "I will ensure my work is done perfectly and on time. I will not be a problem." "Good," August said, seemingly satisfied by her complete submission. He turned on his heel, walking back to his desk and picking up his stacked papers. "Grab your caddy and sweep the floor on your way out. Richie is waiting for me in the conference room." "Yes, Master August," Mia murmured. She quickly pulled the broom from her caddy, sweeping the already spotless hardwood floor with swift, careful movements. Her mind was spinning, a frantic, overwhelming panic clawing at her chest. She had survived her first full solo day of cleaning, but the terrifying reality of the Crowe family was fully laid bare before her. She was living in a den of monsters, and the man who ruled them all was a king of absolute, unyielding ego who would crush her like an insect if she ever stood in the way of his perfect, calculated world. Packing her caddy for the final time, Mia took a step back toward the massive double doors. "I have completed the room, Master August. Have a productive meeting." August didn't look up as she backed out, already focused on the next document. Mia pulled the heavy black doors shut, the electronic lock engaging with a sharp, definitive click that sounded like the closing of a cell door. She leaned against the wall of the quiet corridor, letting out a long, ragged breath as tears of exhaustion and terror finally began to blur her vision.
