The gossip surrounding the championship game was deafening. By the time Monday morning rolled around, the entire campus had apparently analyzed, dissected, and debated the moment Hunter Hayes scooped me out of the mud and carried me out of the stadium. Britney had mysteriously taken a leave of absence, citing "personal reasons." Nobody missed her. I sat in the cafeteria with Maya, nervously picking at my food. The stares and whispers were more intense than ever, but they felt different now. Before, there had been mockery and skepticism. Now, there was mostly awe and a healthy dose of fear. The student body had finally realized that Hunter wasn't just playing a game to annoy his brother. "You look exhausted," Maya commented, studying my face carefully. "Did you even sleep this weekend?"
