Chapter 14

Elara’s POV He quickly ran in front of me blocking every step I made. His speed was not human. I tried my best to run away from him, but he still caught up to me with ease. He placed both hands on my shoulder trying to reassure me to calm down. I only obliged because there is no way I can outrun him or escape. He makes me sit on a huge rock, patiently waiting for me to calm down. “I'm sorry you had to find out this way, but I promise you I am not a terrible or bad person, you need to trust me,” Lucien said. “Why me? Why didn't you just go for someone else? I don't want to get caught up in all of these. I love my normal life, my job, and my side quest to find my biological parents. I am very much satisfied with that routine.” I said, then used my hands to cover my face to hide the tears rolling down my cheeks. “If you are going to feed off me then kill me, you might as well do it now”, My face was still covered with my hands. “I haven't drunk human blood in a long while and I would never think of killing you, I would never kill my better half”. His response sent chills down my spine, he gently removed my hands from my face then used his own hands to wipe off tears from my cheeks, he lifted my chin making me stare right back at him, his eyes flashed into a green color before shifting back to normal, at this point I wasn't scared, I felt comforted then he pressed his lips against mine. Right there and then I saw him in his truest form, I saw Lucien in his truest form. After I felt at ease with him, he asked if I could trust and follow him to his home. Then my instinct kicked in. “It doesn't sit right with me. I might get killed in there”. I said declining his request “You won't get killed, no one will dare to kill my mate. Don't worry I won't take much of your time”. After not much thinking, I followed him in. He told me to hop on his back and I did just that, within a minute we got to a very large mansion that looked like a castle. When we got in, the people working stared at me with a questioning look but Lucien ignored the stares and held my hands firmly. “Elara, just wait for me here i’m coming”. Now I was left alone with different vampires. I wonder if they would sense if I'm human and end up killing me before Lucien comes back. I stood waiting for so long, sweating, contemplating whether I should run, then I saw the lady I met the other day, who mistook me for one of them. She also saw me and approached very politely. “Ohh hi Elara. It's Elara right?”, I just nodded in response. “You must be here for tonight's ball right?” she asked “If she was not here for the ball, why would she come anyway?” Lucien responded out of nowhere before I could say anything. “I only asked because she doesn't look properly dressed for the ball.” “I have sorted that out already”, Lucien’s words were firm and stern towards her making me realize the tension between them. Lucien held me by my hand and then took me away from the crowded place into a room. “The dress on the bed is yours, please I'll need you to change for the event”.Then Lucien left the room. His stern voice made me obedient, even though I had some questions to ask. Once I was done putting on the dress, I looked in the mirror and I saw myself looking like Cinderella at the ball, just that my dress was red. Lucien then came in when I was done changing my dress, but how did he know? “How did you know that I was done changing?”, he just grinned really hard at my question. “I noticed the sound of your heartbeat.” “Wow”, I said in disbelief. “But I have a quick question. This is the date you asked me to? I thought a date is meant to be intimate and about knowing the other person properly” “Elara, if I did not bring you here today it would have changed so many things and I promise to do a proper date next time, but I really needed you to be here today. The ball has already begun. Let's go”. He held out his hand for me and I took it, so he led me out of the room with my hands in his, and we got hard stares from a good number of people but Lucien did not care one bit. When the doors were opened for us to pass through, I was left in awe by the beautiful scenery. The hall is very big with beautiful flowers that were used in decorating it. There was classical music being played making the scenery even more magical. Lilith approached us but this time she was not smiling as I usually see her, then she turned to Lucien as if he was the only one she was seeing. “Why did you change your suit to match hers, care to explain to me what's going on?” “It's almost time for my speech and public announcement. Do not make it hard for me”. He stared at me and told me he was coming back that I should wait where I was. So he left Lillith and me, and I just wished I couldn't sense a tense situation. “Thank you all for coming tonight. It is with great pleasure that my family can host this gathering and applaud us all on our balanced peace treaty. And I know how you all have been waiting and wanting to know if I have been blessed with a mate. For two whole centuries, I have been wandering this earth alone until I crossed paths with my beautiful mate.” Everyone started clapping waiting for his mate to come up, but my feet were glued to the ground. I did not want to go up there on stage. I need to go back to my home. I do not belong here. Lucien stared at me urging me to come up but I don't know why I couldn't, Lilith seized the opportunity and went up on stage instead, then she forcefully placed her hands to intersect with Lucien’s. Someone in the crowd then shouted “How can she be your mate, I saw you with another fellow early this night.” This led to random side talks in the ballroom until Lilith shunned them and spoke up, explaining I'm her abandoned sister that came begging this night and she refused to take me in, but Lucien who has a good heart accepted my apology and persuaded me to forgive her. Her statement made everyone turn to me because her gaze was on me throughout. This made everyone in the crowd randomly nod and gossip in approval, praising Lucien’s forgiving spirit. Right there and then I was hoping and praying for the ground to open for me to be buried in it, I was fighting and holding in my tears. Funny of me to think tonight will be my best night ever.
