Chapter 4 Turned Around and Walked Away

431 Words
The next day, Vito left home really early. He always got up ahead of time to make breakfast for me. Yet the table sat completely empty that morning. I felt totally calm inside. I got myself ready quickly and headed to the company with an empty stomach. As I stepped outside, I saw two people I never expected to run into. It was Vito and Tiffany. They walked out of the breakfast shop side by side, laughing and chatting. Vito held the dog leash, and Tiffany carried a carton of milk. Ample ran around joyfully, its tail wagging nonstop. They looked just like a happy couple meant for each other. I overheard their conversation. Tiffany asked, "Vito, did you argue with Sabrina again?" Vito let out a long sigh. "Yeah. We're about to get married, but she still throws petty tantrums all the time." Tiredness showed clearly on his face. "She's way too stubborn. A woman shouldn't be that strong-willed." Tiffany grinned. "A great guy like you must prefer girls who rely on you, right?" Vito pulled on a helpless smile. "Are you talking about yourself? You come find me for everything—walking the dog, even just having breakfast together. What's wrong, can't live without me?" Tiffany turned her head shyly and let out a soft huff. "Don't blame me. I can tell that you enjoy it." They fooled around playfully. Ample kept wagging its tail and nudging into Vito's arms now and then. Vito stroked the dog's large head, his eyes full of affection. "Ample, did you finish all the sausages I bought for you?" Tiffany teased him. "You gave it so much. There's no way it could eat all of that in a single day. By the way, you took a whole bag of sausage home yesterday. Wait—were you trying to steal food from the dog?" Vito suddenly froze in place. A bitter taste filled my heart. I finally knew the truth. The sausage he'd brought home was truly just leftovers from the dog. In his eyes, I was no different from this dog. Worse still, I only got to eat what the dog did not want. "Some women have terrible tempers, fighting with their partner right before the wedding," Tiffany said. "I think you should give her the cold shoulder for two days. Let her reach out to you first. After all, men never rush to get married anyway." Vito went quiet after listening. He seemed to be thinking hard about her words. I did not hesitate at all. I turned around and walked away.
