As we drove to the destination, Hunter was very quiet.
“How long till we get there?” I asked him
He turned to me and his eyes roamed my face, there was something in his eyes, an expression I could not understand.
“Soon,” He said almost dismissively and he turned to face the window.
I turned away from him but I could not stop the frown that followed.
Something was definitely wrong and the fact that I don’t know what it was, annoyed me.
I should probably stop disturbing him.
When we got to the house, I gasped.
“Is it mine?” I asked in surprise and he nodded.
“Mine is just right beside yours, over there.” He said pointing to the other house.
“We’re neighbours.” I said under my breath but he heard it and shot me one of his rare smiles, i felt my heart beat pick up.
“If you need anything, you’ll call me?”
I nodded my head and pointed to the door, without him saying anything I knew he was telling me to go inside.
I entered the house and went to the window. Hunter stood outside the house but he was not making a move to go back to his own house, instead he stood in the biting cold.
He took a step towards my house and then stopped.
I watched through the small space in the curtain as he fisted his hand and pulled off his beanie.
“Hunter?” I asked with concern.
The anger on his face was so intense it shocked me to the core. He threw his beanie on the snow covered driveway and he stormed off leaving the car doors open.
I didn’t know how long I stood there, processing what I had just witnessed.
I should go over to his house and ask him to tell me what was bothering him but I was afraid of him, I saw what he did to those officers. I know he was more than capable of causing harm…he wouldn’t hurt me too, would he?
I decided to go outside and lock the car doors, then I focused on taking a tour around the house that was literally my new home, it looked like it was designed exactly for me.
I went to sleep that night with the thought of Hunter on my mind and I woke up to the sound of jingling bells.
I pushed the duvet away and climbed down from the bed. As I walked to the door, I realized that I had a bad dream.
I stopped walking to try and recall what I dreamt about but I could get nothing, other than the weird feeling that it was a bad dream.
I opened the door and standing outside was a tall man with chestnut brown hair and sky blue eyes.
“Hi, I'm sorry, did I wake you up?”
I nodded my head and he broke into a small frown.
“You will have to forgive me–” He didn't complete his statement because all of a sudden, Hunter was walking up to us.
He placed his hand over my waist, grabbing me possessively.
“Who are you?”
“Uhm…My name is Aaron, i live over there…”
“What are you doing here?” Hunter asked, cutting him off sharply.
“We are having a Christmas ball tonight. I came to invite her.”
“How do you know someone lives here, we only arrived last night and this house hasn't been occupied in two years?”
“That’s enough questions, don't you think?” i said,
I stepped away from Hunter’s grip and stretched my hand towards Aaron. He took my hand and gave me a solid handshake.
“I would love to attend your christmas ball.”
I could see Hunter frowning with my peripheral vision.
Aaron handed me an invitation card, looked between me and Hunter and he left.
“Why did you have to do that?” I asked him
“Do what?” He asked with genuine confusion
“Ask him so many questions.”
“Because he could be anybody, he could be an enemy, why did you open the door for a stranger? What if he was dangerous?”
“He didn’t look dangerous,” I blurted out but as I started to think of it, he could have been anybody.
“Freya, I made not just a promise but an oath to keep you safe–”
“If you really wanted to keep me safe, why are you living somewhere else?” I blurted out without even thinking of what I was about to say and when those words were out of my lips, it was impossible to take it back.
I felt a wave of embarrassment flow through my entire being. I sounded desperate, there was longing in my voice. Why are you living somewhere else meaning I wanted him to live with me. OH GOD. He would think so poorly of me.
I could not meet his eyes.
“I won't open the door next time and I don't need someone to keep me safe Mr Hunter, I’m more than capable of taking care of myself.”
The bitterness in my voice was the cause of my ego trying to revive my reputation. I shouldn’t have spoken to him with so much anger, he was just trying to help me, he left his home and office to move to another continent just to help me.
I freaked out and ran inside, making sure to lock the door after I shut it. Way to go Freya.
