The cathedral was empty when I returned. The candles near the altar had burned down, and the silver badge lay where it had struck the marble. A fresh dent crossed the wolf's chest. I picked it up and drove to the estate. Elena would be angry. I could deal with anger. I shoved open the manor doors. “Elena! Leo!” No one answered. I took the stairs two at a time and went straight to our bedroom. Elena's side of the closet held empty hangers and bare shelves. The drawers where she kept her jewelry trays stood open.
