The deeper they ventured into the forest, the darker it became. The tall trees around the forest locked out most of the Moon light and two men moved silently between them.
One walked with caution while the other walked like he owned the forest.
"Your Highness..."
The shorter of the two finally broke the silence.
"I still think this is a terrible idea."
The man in the front didn't slow his pace.
"We've been over this already, Rex"
Rex rubbed a hand over his face.
"The King specifically ordered you to remain inside the palace until the council meeting."
"I remember."
"And if Their Majesties discover you're gone..."
"They won't."
"They absolutely will."
The prince let out a quiet chuckle.
"You worry too much."
Rex stopped walking altogether and let out the deepest sigh, unsure of how to convince the man in front of him..
"I'm worried because if the King finds out I helped you sneak out, I'll be the one getting executed."
The prince finally looked over his shoulder, a faint smirk tugging at his lips.
"My brother isn't going to execute you...probably. Why must you be overly dramatic"
"Probably?"
Rex looked horrified at the prince's words and the prince laughed. It was a genuine laugh, brief but surprisingly warm.
"You should've stayed behind if you were this frightened."
"And leave you alone?"
Rex sighed dramatically before catching up.
"Someone has to stop you from getting yourself killed."
The prince's amusement faded.
"I didn't come here looking for trouble."
"No," Rex muttered.
"You came looking for the illegal market that's been impossible to find for twenty years."
A shadow crossed the prince's face.
"Someone finally sent information. An anonymous letter."
"Exactly, Which could be a trap." Rex said in a matter-of-tone, hoping The prince would finally decide to turn back before anyone back at the palace realised that they were gone.
"Or the break we've been waiting for." The prince said, his silver eyes hardening.
"If innocent people are truly being sold there..."
His jaw clenched.
"...then I intend to shut it down myself."
Silence settled between them and even Rex couldn't argue with that. The disappearance of humans and supernatural beings had plagued the kingdom for years and every investigation ended the same way. There were no witnesses, evidence or market, only rumors...until three days ago.
Someone had left a map inside the palace, Specifically at the prince's chamber. There had been no name or explanation. Only a single sentence.
" You'll find them where even monsters fear to wander."
The prince had left before dawn without even waiting to report the matter to the king or counci against everyone's wishes. rex had no choice but to come with him to stop him from doing anything that was crazy and would put him in danger. Being there without any guards was putting him in danger.
Rex suddenly lifted a hand.
"Wait."
The prince stopped and glanced at him..
"What is it?"
"I thought I heard..."
He never finished, the prince went completely still and his pupils narrowed. The world around him disappeared and something drifted through the breeze towards him.
A scent.... A sweet...Wild scent...Unlike anything he'd ever smelled before. His wolf slammed violently against the walls of his mind and a single word echoed through him.
"Mine."
The word echoed through every part of him, his breathing becoming uneven. Golden flecks flickered within his silver eyes and his claws threatened to emerge.
Rex immediately noticed this suddenly change and his eyes widened
"Your Highness?"
He called our but got no response.
"Theo..."
The prince's chest rose sharp and his wolf growled those words again.
"Mine. She's here. Find her now."
A deep, instinctive growl escaped his throat and Rex took an uneasy step backward.
"No..."
His expression drained completely of color.
"It can't be."
The prince's eyes snapped toward the east straight through the trees as though he could already see whoever the scent belonged to.
"Mate."
His wolf roared again and every instinct inside him shattered.
Without another word...He ran and the forest blurred around him as impossible speed carried him between the trees.
"Theo!"
Rex called after him and cursed under his breath before sprinting after him.
"Your Highness!" He yelled out, but already knew there was no stopping a Lycan who had just sensed his destined mate.
