Ava's POV
The rest of the party went in a blur as I did everything possible to avoid making eye contact with this stranger who just happened to be my sister’s boyfriend.
Ughhh, men were completely useless.
Who flirts with two sisters?
The statement “men are scum” couldn’t be truer.
Tired of the torture, I excused myself from the event with the excuse of cramps and went to my room. Dad didn’t make a fuss, he had been euphoric the entire night.
The moment I got into my room, I slumped on my king-size bed, struggling to take off my clothes. The only thing I could think of was his grey eyes and the way his breath had tickled my neck.
I could feel heat rush between my legs. I squeezed them shut.
Stupid body.
Why did it have to respond to him of all people?
I closed my eyes and counted to ten before deciding to get up and take a shower.
A warm shower and a good night’s sleep were all I probably needed to get my head out of the clouds and back to reality.
Even though a part of me doubted that was true.
…
The sound of my alarm clock jolted me awake.
Half asleep, I slapped blindly hoping to find the alarm and turn it off for a few more moments of sleep.
That hope went down the drain when—
“Oh my God, Ava, you’re still sleeping!”
My door banged open and Emilia’s annoying voice rang out in my room.
“It’s already 8 a.m. Get your lazy ass up already. Breakfast is almost ready!”
I could hear her parading around my room as she spoke.
The light flicked on. I hissed like a vampire burying my face in my pillow and covers.
“Get lost, Emilia,” I groaned.
“Come on, Ava.” She dropped down beside me.
“We’re having breakfast with Luke, and I need your support before Dad drowns him with interrogations.”
My eyes flew open at the sound of his name.
I threw the covers off my face.
“Luke, as in your boyfriend?”
“Yeah.”
My heart skipped, but I ignored it.
“Sorry, not interested.” I turned over pulling the covers back up.
She dragged them off.
“Come on, Ava. Please help me out here. Please.”
“Em… I can’t,” my voice cracked.
I couldn’t face her boyfriend. My stomach was in knots just hearing his name, let alone being in the same room.
If only she knew. She would kill me.
“Ava, come on. Have I ever begged you for something?”
“When have you not?” I rolled my eyes.
“Okay, fine. She sighed.
But this…This is different. I really like him, and you know how Dad can be. Back me up here please.”
“I'd do anything Ava.”
She went on for what seemed like twenty minutes.
“Okay, fine,” I sighed in defeat.
“But you owe me like crazy.”
“Thank you!” She hugged me before wrinkling her nose.
“Now please take a shower and wear something pretty. You stink.”
She got up and skipped to the door before leaving.
The door clicked behind her.
I heaved a sigh and covered myself with the blanket.
“It’s just one breakfast, right?”
…
I stared at my wardrobe, white towel wrapped around me, wet hair dripping down my back. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to wear.
There was a knock on my door.
“Miss Ava, everyone is downstairs waiting,” a maid called from behind the door.
Just great. “Be right there!” I yelled back.
I combed through my gowns carefully, my hands searching through each one.
“Too big, too tight, too slutty,” I muttered as I touched each gown.
What was I even doing?
I was being stupid.
Why was I even searching the gowns section?
If this were a normal day, I’d have worn a sweatshirt and sweatpants.
I settled for black shorts and a sweatshirt before heading downstairs.
I met everyone in what seemed like an awkward conversation.
Dad’s face was expressionless.
Emilia picked at her plate, brows furrowed.
Mum was probably taking on the job of a mediator.
“I’m sorry I’m late.” I walked to the table.
I swallowed hard when I saw the empty seat between my dad and Luke.
I almost laughed at myself.
It was like the universe was sending me a message.
The second I sat down, I could feel his eyes drilling holes through my head. I kept my head low and focused on my food.
Breakfast was unusually quiet.
I could feel the unspoken tension between my dad and sister.
“So, what do you do, Luke?” Mum tried to break the ice.
“I’m the PA to the first son of the Harrison Group,” he replied smoothly.
“Ohh.” Mum tried to hide her surprise. “That’s rather interesting.”
“It is,” Emilia chimed in quickly.
“The Harrison Group is one of the leading groups in the state.” She placed her hand on his as if to reassure him.
“They are one of our business rivals,” dad cut in.
“That doesn’t change the fact that they do good business and their company is thriving. Isn’t that what you care about? Being successful?” Emilia clapped back.
“He’s just an employee,” Dad shot back.
“He can be fired tomorrow. What next? He becomes jobless.”
Emilia chuckled coldly.
“That’s all it ever is about for you, isn’t it? Money. It’s always money. You never want to see people beyond that.” She raised her hands in frustration.
“Emilia,” mum warned.
Luke reached under the table and placed his hand on her thigh, rubbing softly to calm her. My heart did a little squeeze.
“You’re right, Mr. Morgan,” Luke said softly. “Yes, I can be fired, but the lessons I’ve learned are mine for life. I could also get another job or start my own company.”
If they said anything more, I couldn’t quite make it out.
All I could see was his hands trailing her thighs.
The taste of the food had turned bitter in my mouth.
I watched as his fingers went higher under the knee length gown she wore till I couldn't see it.
I gasped softly before excusing myself from the table before I would puke.
The toilet door clicked shut, and my back pressed firmly against the cold metal.
My heart hammered in my chest.
I bit my lip as my mind replayed the image of his fingers trailing her thigh until I could no longer see them.
My chest squeezed tight.
Why did it hurt so much?
It had nothing to do with me what Emilia did with her boyfriend.
“Don’t be silly, Ava. They’re together. It’s just one breakfast,” I whispered, steadying my breath.
The door opened before I could move.
Luke slipped inside.
“Sorry. I was looking for the restroom.”
“No problem.”
I was about to slip out when arms pulled me in.
“Don’t go.” He pressed my back firmly against the door, his breath inches from mine.
“Are you crazy?” My eyes widened. “Emilia is just outside!”
“It doesn’t matter.”
“What the hell…it does. She’s your girlfriend.”
He leaned closer.
God, no… his scent was intoxicating.
“What if I told you…” His hands trailed my face, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. I struggled to concentrate as he continued.
“…that I liked you more? That you were the reason I went after her in the first place?”
My pulse stuttered.
“Get lost,” I mumbled weakly.
“Are you sure you want me to get lost? His hand slid up my thigh. Or do you want my hand doing exactly what I did to your sister?”
A helpless moan escaped my lips before I could stop it.
I felt light-headed.
Eyes squeezed shut, I trembled under his touch, fire racing through my veins.
His face hovered inches from mine.
I could almost feel his fingers reach my core—
And then suddenly, he stopped.
A gasp tore from my throat as my eyes flew open.
His lips brushed my ear, an evil smirk plastered on his face.
“Just as I thought. You want me just as much as I want you.”
