A knock on the door awoke Jim. On the doorstep stood two police officers and a civilian whom Jim recognised as a resident of the village. “Do you have any weapons?” one of the police officers asked. “Only some kitchen knives,” said Jim, trying to treat the question with the contempt he thought it deserved. “I also have a knife from my days in the army, but I wouldn’t know where it is.” “We have to help you find it,” said the police officer.
