DAY 9. AT SEA. MORNING. Genevieve was awake early, but her body was heavy with tiredness. Peter had sweated and tossed most of the night and made frequent runs to the bathroom. She left him sleeping at last in the cabin's darkness and went up to the deck for a walk. It was quiet at this early hour, but already the sun made her eyes water, and the clear sky seemed to throb with heat. Later, she took a coffee and croissant to the shady patch where she had sat before with Thomas and opened the newsletter listing the day’s activities. She heard a chair being pulled along the deck near to her but didn’t raise her eyes from the newsletter until she heard Martin’s voice.
