Watching Kate's breathing grow weaker, Lucy had no choice but to rush in. She dropped to her knees with a heavy thud, crushing all her pride, her voice nothing but desperate pleading.
"I'll do anything you say. Please, save my mom. She's my only family left!"
A flicker of emotion crossed Dany's face.
Nina saw he was about to agree and refused to stand for it.
She deliberately stepped in front of Dany, clutching her chest, frowning tightly, her eyes filled with fake fear and dependence as she looked at him.
"Dany, my chest hurts so bad. I'm so scared. Am I going to die?"
Nina's face was healthier and rosier than anyone else's, but Dany acted as if he couldn't see. He hurriedly pushed Lucy out.
Before closing the door, he ordered his men to hold Lucy back—no one was to let her go until the checkup was over.
With red and swollen eyes, Lucy knelt on the floor and banged her head again and again, as if she felt no pain.
But everyone there looked away; no one dared disobey Dany's order.
"My Lucy... Mom has dragged you down..."
Everyone turned toward the voice. Kate stood on the windowsill, her gaunt cheeks streaked with cloudy tears, her thin body swaying in the sharp wind.
Lucy trembled violently, her heart leaping to her throat.
Sensing her mother's resolve to die, Lucy was released. She inched closer carefully, begging over and over, her voice broken and ragged.
"Mom, you didn't drag me down. I dragged you and Dad down. If I hadn't been blinded by love, our family would never have ended up like this. Mom, I only have you. Please... don't leave me..."
Before Lucy could finish, Kate let go and fell straight from the windowsill.
"Mom—" Lucy screamed in agony.
At Kate's funeral, Lucy knelt on the ground with empty eyes, cut off from the whole world.
While Dany chatted with guests, Nina, looking triumphant, stepped close to Lucy and pretended to comfort her, barely able to hide her pride.
"Lucy, why were you so arrogant back then? Look at you now—miserable. Oh, I forgot to tell you: I'm pregnant. You've lost your only use."
Lucy finally lifted her head.
With her mother gone, she had nothing left to lose. She shot back sharply.
"Even so, I'm still Mrs. Hayes. Not you. Can't you and your baby even take my place?"
Nina trembled with rage. When Dany approached, she threw herself into his arms, pointed straight at Lucy, and cried so hard she could not speak.
Seeing Lucy's cold expression, Dany burst into anger. He raised his hand and slapped her hard across the face.
A sharp "c***k" cut through the silent crowd.
He took Nina's hand and left, deliberately leaving Lucy alone to be mocked by all of Riverfront City.
The center of all stares, Lucy remained calm. With her red, swollen cheek, she laid Kate to rest beside Herry, Lucy's father.
Staring at her parents' kind smiling faces on the tombstone, she could no longer hold back her tears.
She began with quiet sobs, then broke into loud, heartbreaking wails.
Lucy was eaten up by guilt. If she hadn't been obsessed with love, her parents would never have died.
When she finally calmed down, she stood up slowly. She glanced at the driver following her and knew Dany was keeping her under watch.
He was afraid she would disturb his happiness with Nina and afraid she would hurt Nina again.
Lucy did not lose her temper. Instead, she got into the car obediently and returned to the Hayes house.
She watched the driver leave, waited another thirty minutes, then finally went downstairs safely.
Lucy plucked the last rose. Her fingertip was pricked open and beaded with blood, but she felt nothing.
She stared at the broken flower in her hand and whispered softly:
"Look. Even my last hope is gone."
