In an instant, Lucy's whole body tensed up. She struggled instinctively.
This only made the man hold her tighter. His voice was urgent as he spoke.
"Don't do anything rash! My name is Ted Kent. I live nearby. If you're in trouble, tell me—I'll help you. If I can't, I'll take you to the police. They'll help you."
Lucy suddenly understood and laughed in spite of herself. She quickly explained.
"I'm not trying to kill myself. I just think the ocean is beautiful and wanted to touch it."
Ted let go immediately. When he saw Lucy with her skirt fluttering in the wind, he froze completely. His mind went blank, his heart stopped for a beat, then began pounding wildly.
