Chapter 7

1030 Words
“Astrid….Astrid, Astrid!” Belle taps frantically on Astrid. Astrid opens her eyes and winces from the crippling pain that racks her head, travelling down her body, one muscle at a time. “Am I dead?” She voices in a whisper, too weak to be any more vocal. “Not yet my child but if you don’t leave any moment now, you will be,” Belle replies, placing a backpack on the bed Astrid is lying on. Astrid slowly sits up, powering through the ache she feels all over, memories of her rejection from earlier barraging her mind and her heart thuds with pain as tears coat her eyes once more. She thought she would die when Zane rejected her. For three years she prayed that one day the mate bond would mean something to him, that he would not just see her as a s*x object where he comes to offload his balls so they don’t go blue. Three years she waited for the day that he would have love and not lust in his beautiful, ocean blue eyes when he looked at her. She waited for the day being Luna would actually mean more than robotically carrying out duties day in and day out but it never came. Not only did he divorce her, he also believed she would dishonour and cheat on him and he rejected her without a proper ceremony. She can hear her wolf whimpering in her head, she is in so much pain she cannot tell which one is hers and which one is that of her wolf. The heartbreak is double fold. A scorned lover and a rejected wolf. She doesn’t deserve this, she loved him with everything that she is, body, soul, spirit and wolf. The least he could have done was allow her to defend herself, give her some element of doubt no matter how worthless she is to him, place her under the alpha command and question her, anything, anything but this void of incurable pain that he has left her in. She doesn’t even know if her baby is fine but it seems so, she can feel its silent aura within her, maybe passing out saved her from the entirety of the pain and saved her baby. Zane’s child, she did not even get the chance to tell him about it. Does she still tell him? Now that he thinks she is a cheat, will he even believe that the child is his? The look in his eyes earlier was one of sheer hate and disgust, she has to keep it to herself. “Astrid, did you hear me?” Belle shakes her out of her painful daze. “You need to leave. Now. I overheard the Alpha and the elders discuss, you are no longer going to walk the walk of shame, the picture of you has gone viral all over the pack, your death is the only retribution they seek.” Astrid’s eyes widen in shock as fear grips her heart and her hands protectively cover her stomach. Her life is not worth much living to her without Zane in it, he is the only one she lives for but her child deserves to see the world, his child, their child. “Why? Do I not deserve to be heard? Before a death sentence is passed, there must be a trial, that is the law,” she says, the tears that coat her eyes break the barrier and slowly run down her face, her heart feels numb and her soul defeated. “Astrid, now is not a time to quote the law, please, take this backpack and jump through the window, you have to protect you and your baby,” Belle says, tears spilling from her own eyes as she shoves the bag against Astrid. “Tonight, I put a sedative in the food meant for the guards, they are all currently asleep but it won’t be long before they have to change patrol and someone will notice, you must leave now.” “But where will I go Belle?” Astrid asks, staring down at the backpack. “This is the only place I know, I’ve never stepped past any of the pack borders.” She has, the one time she had the choice to escape Courtney’s horror or save the boy that was nice to her and she chose to save him, she gave up her chance at freedom to save Zane and now she must leave her home to escape his wrath after enduring ten years of suffering because she chose to stay and save him. “I don’t know, child, but there are hundreds of packs around, you can go to any of them, anywhere but here. Now enough talk, quick, put these on,” Belle hands her a hoodie. “But what about you? What will happen when they find out you helped me escape?” Astrid asks as she wears the hoodie. “One life in exchange for two,” Belle replies sharply, forcing the bag pack on her. Astrid turns and looks at Belle’s teary eyes and she breaks down in her arms. She barely felt the loss of her parents because of this woman and now because of her choices, Belle may lose her life. “I’m sorry, I should have listened to you, I thought he would love me with time, I thought he–” “That’s enough Astrid, you must leave….please….” Belle sniffs back and tears and pushes Astrid towards the window, helping her get down. Astrid takes one last look at Belle as tears of pain and regret rush down her eyes, she doesn’t have a clue where she is going, she doesn’t know what life is like in the real world, out there. She will be alone, she will be without Zane. Why did he choose death as her punishment? Why does he have to make her leave? Her heart clenches and she turns away, bawling as she runs into the woods. She does not know what life has in store for her but whatever it is, she will never love again.
