“Do you understand all the terms of the divorce Astrid?” Max, Zane’s Beta and the pack’s lawyer, says to Astrid in Zane’s office at the packhouse.
“Where is he?” Astrid mutters, glancing around the office.
“The Alpha’s whereabout is not my concern, neither should it be yours. He already signed his part of the papers, all I need is your agreement to the terms and your signature and we will be done here,” Max replies curtly, a clearly irritated look in his eyes.
“Oh,” Astrid retorts, a bitter feeling filling her up.
Does Zane think so low of her that he could not even sign the divorce papers in front of her? She glances down at her tummy and wonders if he will change his mind if he learns about the baby.
Zane may not love her, he may not care for her but she has loved him since the day she saved him from rogues in the woods when they were just kids, Zane probably doesn’t remember but she does and when he turned out to be her fated mate, there was nothing more fulfilling.
It was a fantasy fulfilled, a dream come true but she quickly realised it was just a dream, her reality has been a nightmare but she hoped things would change and things did change, her life has gone from a mild nightmare to a full blown horror movie.
“I don’t want anything from him, I just— I would like to talk to him, there’s something I want to tell him,” Astrid says, glancing through the document in front of her.
Zane’s generous offer of five hundred thousand as her alimony looks rather unappealing to her. Being his wife, even with the distance between them, even if she spends scarce nights in her arms, it has been the most happy years of her life.
She wants to tell him that she is pregnant, maybe he will keep her then, maybe she will still get to be around him, even if he makes Courtney his official Luna, as long as he doesn’t cast her aside, she will be content.
It is a desperate attempt to clutch at what was never in her grasp but if it gives her a chance to remain his, she will give it a try, he is the only man she has ever loved in her life, her first everything and she doesn’t want to lose him without trying.
“I thought you and the Alpha already had an agreement, quit stalling and affix your signature, if you don’t want the alimony, strike it out and sign underneath or above it,” Max replies in a curt tone.
Astrid ignores him and mindlinks Zane instead.
‘What?’ Zane’s irritated voice booms in her head immediately, full of spite. ‘Is half a million not enough for you? Fine, I’ll make it a million.’
He ends the mindlink immediately and she mindlinks him again.
‘Alpha, please just listen to—’
‘I’m currently out shopping for wedding rings with my new wife and you are needlessly interrupting me, our chapter is closed Astrid, I’m not giving you any more money and don’t bother going back to my house, I have your things packed and waiting for you outside the pack house.’
Zane’s cold voice slices through her heart, a pain so felt that she holds her chest, fighting back the tears tugging at her eyes lest she embarrases herself in front of Max.
‘Alpha, I’m—’
He ends the mindlink again.
She’s about to open it once more but she hesitates, feeling sad for herself.
Is this really how she wants to live the remainder of her life?
For the first eighteen years of her life, all she knew was suffering, subjected to all forms of torture, humiliation and abuse from Courtney and her family and the next three, she lived, yearning for the attention and affection of a husband and mate that never reciprocated her love.
Does she really want to keep living like that?
But it’s the only life she knows, how does she move on from it?
How does she accept that true happiness was never written in the cards for her?
Leaving her questions unanswered, she takes a deep breath, grabs the divorce paper, strikes out the alimony, signs above it and affixes her signature everywhere else necessary.
“Remember, in three days, under the fool moon and in front of the whole pack, the rejection ceremony will take place and your final bond to the Alpha will be broken,” Max says to her as she stands up and leaves.
Astrid nods and gives him a sad smile, a sadness that spreads from her lips to her eyes, down to her heart and envelopes every cell of her body as she walks defeatedly out of the packhouse to see a truck parked with her belongings inside it.
A man walks up to her and hands her the keys. “The Alpha asked me to deliver this to you,” he points at the truck.
“Wait, I can’t drive,” She calls to the man as he walks away.
“I don’t see how that is any of my business,” he replies coldly, sneering at her. “You are no longer the Luna, I am under no obligation to serve you.”
Astrid’s shock is palpable as she stares at him, a sour feeling growing in her chest.
Has the news spread that fast?
“I can help you Luna, where do you want to go?” A lady appears and says to her, a cheerful smile on her lips. “Don’t mind that oaf, I don’t know why the Alpha chose to let you go but you were a good Luna.”
Astrid finds some comfort in the words of the nice lady and she smiles at her even if the smile barely reaches her eyes.
“I don’t really know where I could go but I guess a guesthouse may suffice for now,” Astrid says in a sullen tone.
“I know just the right one,” The lady replies, a smile still plastered on her lips as she takes the keys from Astrid. “After you Luna,” she bows slightly and gestures towards the truck.
“Thank you,” Astrid replies, walking ahead and the lady squints at her, a sinister smirk adorning her lips.
“What a fool,” the lady says to herself, walking behind Astrid, “you have no idea what Courtney has planned for you.”
