Chapter 3: The Mating Bond Snaps

1305 Words
Brittany's POV His fever spikes to 107 degrees. I press wet towels against Tyler's forehead while his body burns with heat that should cook human brain tissue. But he's not human, and somehow his supernatural metabolism handles temperatures that would kill me in minutes. "Come on," I whisper, my hands moving over his chest. "Fight whatever this is." Golden light flickers under my palms as I pour healing energy into him. His silver burns disappear like they were never there, while claw marks seal into pale scars that map battles I can't imagine. Every time I touch him, exhaustion pulls at my bones, but underneath the fatigue lurks something else. Something that feels like coming alive. I've been working for six hours straight. My grandmother's kitchen table has become an operating room, medical supplies scattered across hand-sewn tablecloths while Tyler's unconscious form takes up most of the space. His breathing has evened out, but his heart rate stays elevated. Not panic anticipation. Like his body knows something mine doesn't. "Brittany." My name comes out as barely a whisper, but it jolts through me like lightning. Tyler's eyes flutter open, storm-gray irises focusing on my face with laser intensity. The moment our gazes lock, the world explodes. Recognition hits me like a physical blow, knocking the breath from my lungs while every cell in my body screams yes and finally and home. Pack instincts I didn't know I possessed roar to life, ancient knowledge flooding my nervous system with certainty that defies rational thought. Mate. The word appears in my mind without permission, absolute and terrifying in its truth. Tyler's eyes widen, his pupils dilating as he stares at me like I'm salvation and damnation rolled into one person. "You," he breathes, and the word carries weight like destiny. "It's really you." Something snaps between us invisible, electric, binding. A connection that burns through my nervous system like molten wire, linking my consciousness to his until I can't tell where my thoughts end and his begin. I feel his emotions bleeding through the bond: gratitude sharp as broken glass, confusion that tastes like copper, and underneath it all, hunger that has nothing to do with food. My own feelings amplify and reflect back relief that he's alive, terror at what's happening to me, and desire so intense it makes my hands shake. "What" I try to step back, but my feet won't move. The bond holds me in place, invisible chains that feel more like coming home than captivity. "What is this?" Tyler tries to sit up and immediately collapses back onto the table, his supernatural strength depleted by whatever curse nearly killed him. But his eyes never leave my face, cataloguing my features like he's memorizing them. "Mating bond," he says simply. "Fate." Mating bond? "That's not" I shake my head, trying to clear the fog of supernatural recognition. "That's not real. Fate isn't real." His smile holds pain and wonder in equal measure. "Tell that to your instincts." And God help me, my instincts are screaming. Every fiber of my being wants to get closer, to touch him, to never let this dangerous stranger out of my sight. The rational part of my mind the part trained in medical science and evidence-based thinking rebels against the impossibility. But the rest of me knows. "Your name," Tyler says, his voice rough with exhaustion. "Tell me your name." "Brittany." The word comes out steadier than I feel. "Brittany Hayes." He repeats it like a prayer. "Brittany Hayes." His tongue shapes each syllable with reverence that makes heat pool in my stomach. "How long have you been able to heal?" "I don't know what you mean." "The golden light. The way you brought me back from the edge of death three times." His hand moves toward mine, stopping just short of contact. "How long?" I look down at my palms, still tingling with residual energy. "It started three months ago. A patient who should have died. And tonight, another one, and then I found you..." "And saved my life." His fingers finally touch mine, the contact sending electricity racing up my arm. "You saved my life, Brittany Hayes." The way he says my name makes my pulse jump. I should pull away, should demand answers about mating bonds and supernatural healing and why touching him feels like the most natural thing in the world. Instead, I find myself moving closer. "What are you?" I whisper. "Werewolf." No hesitation, no explanation. Just truth. "Alpha of the Silverwood Pack." Werewolf. The word should sound insane. Instead, it clicks into place like the final piece of a puzzle I've been solving my whole life. "And the curse?" His jaw tightens. "Silver poison. Designed to kill my specific bloodline. My stepmother's work." "Your stepmother tried to murder you?" "Politics." Tyler's grip on my hand tightens. "Pack leadership isn't hereditary anymore when someone has enough magic to change the rules." I process this information while the mating bond pulses between us, sending waves of awareness through my nervous system. Tyler is werewolf. Alpha werewolf. Someone poisoned him with silver to steal his pack, and somehow I'm his fated mate. My scientific mind rebels against the impossibility while my heart recognizes truth. "You're exhausted," I say finally. "You need food." "I need you." The words hang in the air between us, loaded with meaning that goes beyond physical hunger. The mating bond amplifies everything his need, my response, the inevitable pull that draws us together despite logic and reason. "Food first," I manage. "Then we figure out what happens next." Tyler nods, but his eyes stay locked on mine. "Don't go far." "I'm just going to the kitchen." But even crossing the room feels like agony, the bond stretching between us like elastic ready to snap. I heat chicken soup on my grandmother's ancient stove, my hands shaking as I pour it into a bowl. When I return to Tyler's side, he's managed to prop himself up against the wall, though the effort clearly costs him. "Here." I perch on the edge of the table, holding the spoon to his lips. The first sip makes him close his eyes in relief. "Thank you." "When's the last time you ate?" "Three days. Since the curse started." He accepts another spoonful, his lips warm against the metal. "Haven't been able to keep anything down." "And now?" "Now I have my mate taking care of me." His storm-gray eyes find mine. "Changes everything." The word mate sends heat racing through my bloodstream. I offer him more soup, hyperaware of every point where our bodies almost touch. When his fingers brush mine around the bowl, the contact burns like brands. "This is insane," I whisper. "Yes." Tyler's thumb traces over my knuckles, sending electricity up my arm. "Completely insane." "I'm human." "Are you?" His question carries weight I don't understand. "Humans can't heal the way you do. Can't break supernatural curses with touch." I think about Tommy Rodriguez's resurrection, about the golden light that flowed from my palms into Tyler's dying body. About my grandmother's stories of women who could heal with touch. "I don't know what I am." "You're mine." Tyler says it with certainty that should terrify me. Instead, it feels like absolution. "And I'm yours. Everything else, we'll figure out together." The cabin fills with tension that crackles like electricity before a storm. Tyler finishes the soup, but neither of us moves to break the contact between his fingers and mine. The mating bond pulses with heat and recognition, ancient magic that transcends species barriers and rational thought. Outside, wind rattles the windows while storm clouds gather over the mountains. But inside, warmth spreads through my chest as I stare into storm-gray eyes that see straight through to my soul. Everything has changed. Everything.
