Kirstin Beck stepped into the tiny examination room, hoping to see Dr. Werner. She was alone, the room stark and cold, the paint peeling from the crown molding, the wall paper starting to fade. She had waited over two hours, and she now eyed the clock, knowing the facility would close shortly. Medical offices weren’t open many hours, especially since doctors weren’t compensated for any extra hours worked. Ten minutes later, the door opened and Dr. Werner entered, holding a chart in his right hand. “Hello Kirstin,” he said warmly. “I’m surprised to see you. I thought your ankle would have healed by now. Please, take off your shoe.” Kirstin did as she was told, listening closely.
