“There was an escape attempt last weekend,” Karl Hofer said as he sat behind his desk. “In the cemetery behind the Church of Reconciliation.” “I wasn’t aware of that,” Dr. Werner said, feigning ignorance. Hofer smiled smugly. “It was a very clumsy attempt,” he remarked. “I wonder who was involved.” “I wouldn’t know,” Werner said, his heart beginning to race. Hofer leaned forward, bridging the gap between them. “I think you do.” “I’m sorry, but I don’t.” “Why the cemetery?” “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” “Who’s your friend in the West?” “I have many friends in the West?” “Which one cut the barbed wire?” “I don’t know anything about that.” “Who went with you?” “I wasn’t involved.” Hofer sat back, his face stern. “This is a friendly discussion, Doctor Werner,” he said
