The night was quiet, almost too quiet.
Elara and Kieran stood with Mara and Theo at the abandoned train station, their small circle of light glowing steadily. They had trained relentlessly for weeks, but nothing could prepare them for what was coming.
A low, vibrating hum filled the air. The ground beneath their feet seemed to pulse in sync with it.
“They’re here,” Theo whispered.
Shadows began to coalesce at the edges of the station, creeping along walls, pooling into vague humanoid forms. They hissed and whispered names—names of people who had already been erased. The air grew colder, and the hum intensified, vibrating through Elara’s chest.
“Stay together,” Mara instructed. “Your light must not falter.”
---
The first shadow lunged.
It struck Mara, and for a moment, she flickered violently. Her glow dimmed. Elara shouted and dashed forward, throwing her hands toward the shadow.
Her memories flared—the sound of her aunt’s laughter, the smell of rain-soaked streets, the warmth of Kieran’s hand.
A wave of light erupted from her, pushing the shadow back. Mara stabilized beside her.
“It’s stronger than before,” Elara panted.
“Of course it is,” Theo said grimly. “They’re learning too.”
---
The shadows attacked in waves.
Some flickered in and out of existence, testing their defenses. Others solidified just enough to claw at them, whispering doubts, making them question reality.
Elara felt a cold, suffocating pressure—like the world itself wanted to erase her. She closed her eyes and clung to Kieran.
“You’re still here,” he whispered. “Hold on.”
Her light surged, brighter than ever, stabilizing the circle around them. The shadows recoiled, hissing and twisting.
---
Then, one shadow split into two.
It lunged at Kieran. Elara reacted instinctively, throwing her arms around him. Her light flared, but this time, it was different—it burned brighter, stronger, but left her exhausted.
She staggered. Her form flickered for a terrifying moment.
“Keep holding!” Mara shouted.
Elara gritted her teeth, pushing through the fear. Memories flashed faster and faster—her first day at school, the first time she met Kieran, the first laugh she remembered from childhood. Each memory was an anchor, pulling her back from the brink.
Slowly, the shadows began to retreat. They hissed, shrieking in a way that sounded almost human, but the station remained in their control.
---
When the last shadow dissolved into nothingness, silence fell.
The air was heavy. Their breaths came in ragged gasps.
Theo’s glowing eyes scanned the area. “That… was just the first wave. The system knows we’re learning. Next time, it won’t hesitate.”
Elara sank to the floor, exhausted but determined. She looked at Kieran, whose hand was still in hers. “We survived,” she whispered.
“Yes,” he said, “but we need to get stronger. We can’t rely only on hope and memories. We have to master our light, or the shadows will eventually win.”
Mara and Theo nodded. “Agreed. We train harder,” Mara said. “Every day, every hour. We don’t get second chances.”
Elara looked at the flickering stars through the broken roof. The world outside didn’t notice them—would never notice them—yet here, in this forgotten place, they existed.
And for now, that was enough.
