The Null Zone

That night, Elara couldn’t sleep. The library’s warning had lingered in her mind all day. *“Shadows remember. They’re coming for the light.”* She traced the words over and over, trying to understand them, but all she could feel was fear. Kieran had insisted on staying over. They sat in her small room, knees touching, hands intertwined, listening to the wind as if it might whisper answers. Neither spoke much. Silence had become safer than words. --- Around midnight, the first strange noises began. A soft tapping against the walls. At first, subtle—like distant raindrops. Then louder. A hollow echo reverberating in her skull. Elara stiffened. “Do you hear that?” Kieran nodded slowly. “It’s… not normal.” The walls seemed to breathe, expanding and contracting like a living thing. Shadows crawled along the edges of the room, flickering unnaturally. Elara’s phone buzzed violently. She snatched it up. **Unknown:** *They are awake. The correction begins.* “What correction?” she whispered, terrified. No reply. --- The tapping grew louder, almost pounding. Suddenly, the light flickered. The room warped. The shadows on the walls stretched and twisted into vague, humanoid shapes. Elara’s heart raced. “K-Kieran… what are they?” “They’re echoes,” he said, voice low and shaking. “Fragments of people who were erased. They try to pull back what’s alive.” Elara felt a cold touch brush her arm, though nothing was there. Her hands shook violently. A shadow lunged from the corner of the room. She screamed. Kieran grabbed her and pulled her behind him. The room shimmered. Her body flickered like a broken hologram. “They want to erase me… fully,” Elara gasped. Kieran held her tightly. “Not while I’m here. I won’t let them.” --- The shadows circled the room, whispering her name. “E-lar-a… Elara… Vale…” The words made her knees buckle. Each syllable felt like a weight pressing her into the floor. Her phone buzzed again. **Unknown:** *You chose him. That delays them. But not for long.* Elara’s lips trembled. “I can’t… I can’t do this.” Kieran brushed a strand of hair from her face. “Yes, you can. You’re stronger than you think. You’re my light.” She leaned into him, trying to anchor herself, trying to force herself into existence. The shadows paused, as if they could feel her determination. For a few heartbeats, the room was still. Then one shadow split off and surged forward. Elara’s vision blurred. Her fingers began fading—transparent. Kieran roared, and in a burst of desperation, grabbed her hands, pressing his forehead to hers. “Stay. Fight. Don’t let go!” Her body flared with warmth. The shadows recoiled like fire had burned them. Her phone buzzed one last time. **Unknown:** *Temporary… stabilization… failed…* The shadows hissed and dissolved into the corners, leaving the room cold and silent. Elara sank to the floor, trembling. Kieran held her, whispering softly, “You’re still here… you’re still here.” But both knew it was only temporary. Outside, the stars flickered again, dimming one by one. And somewhere, the system that erased memories and people recalibrated—preparing for its next move. Elara understood the terrifying truth: she wasn’t just fighting for herself anymore. She was fighting for every memory, every moment, every shadow of existence that had ever been erased—and every light that could still shine. # 🌑 End of episode 8
