Bailey smiled, the light in eyes dim. Carter noticed her countenance didn't match her expressions.
“What's wrong, Bailey?”
She looked at him softly. “Nothing, Carter.”
Carter ran his hand through his hair. He knew this wouldn't last most likely. She was...well her. And he was him.
“Carter, why do you think you like me?”
Carter frowned at the question.
“I like you because you're sweet and smart and you know who George Orwell is.”
She smiled. “Oh. So how was your day?”
“Fine," Carter said. “What about you?”
“I had a good day.”
Carter's eyes roved her features as he slowly nodded.
“That's good."
They sat in awkward silence. They'd met at his house, only a few minutes walk from hers.
“Bailey?” Carter asked shyly.
“Yes?”
“Can I... can I kiss you?”
Bailey sweetly grinned,“Sure.”
Ever so cautiously, Carter crept forward pressing his lips on hers.
Dazed he leaned back. She smiled goofily. “You're good at this.”
Carter's cheeks burned. “Really? It's my first one."
His cheeks flushed completely. “I–I mean—”
Bailey kissed him cutting off his sentence. He was sweet boy, he was. She liked him, she did.
She knew she couldn't be picky. She got lucky, it wouldn't last long and it wouldn't happen again.
-
A few weeks went by, and the couple grew closer. Meanwhile, Spencer grew distant.
It was her birthday in a few days, and wanted to surprise her. So he card his friends, her little brother and sister, and even... Carter.
Bailey left that day for coffee. Carter wasn't there. Disheartened, but surprised, she went back home. As soon she opened the door, and cut on the lights, everyone jumped out and said surprise!
She was surprised. Lia blew a noise maker, and threw glitter.
Bailey stood still in pleased shock. Carter came to her, and kissed her softly.
“Do you forgive me?”
She nodded, tears in her eyes.
“Of course."
Peter came up and hugged her, and so did Lia. Tears fell, a grin glued to her face.
“Happy birthday, sis."
She knew who did this. Only two people knew about her siblings. Spencer was in kitchen. He didn't want to see her with him.
He did love her surprised face though. He took a picture. She looked so happy. Then Carter came and he faded away.
He was hoping to leave and come back later.
But Bailey was far too intelligent.
She hunted him down, and ran to him, throwing her arms around him.
“Thank you, so much Spencer.”
He smiled, smelling the cocoa butter she always put on her skin.
“What if I didn't do it Treasure?”
Bailey rolled her eyes. “Only you could've done this. I'm so happy. I forgot it was my birthday.”
Happy he'd made her happy he let go. Today was her day.
“Well, let me introduce you to some people who've been dying to meet you.”
All his friends were gathered in the living room, spilling over the chairs. Vince came up and hugged her.
“Happy birthday, Bailey.”
She hugged him back. “Thank you.”
Spencer cleared his throat.
“Treasure these are my friends and they're wives.”
“Girlfriend,” one of the women corrected.
“Treasure this is Hunter, Dayton, Finn and Gary.”
She smiled and greeted him kindly.
“Ms. Treasure—”
“Bailey,” Spencer narrowed his eyes before she could speak.
She shot look at him.
“Sorry,” He mumbled.
“Ms. Bailey this is my wife Donique,” Dayton introduced.
Bailey's eyes gleamed at the prospect of a female friend.
“Hello, Donique. I'm Bailey. Pleased to meet you."
Donique smiled back, her eyes twinkling. “A pleasure Bailey. You're surrounded by men, how do you cope?”
Bailey shrugged. “Most times I don't notice them.”
Donique thought she was joking but Dayton nodded. “She ready doesn't.”
“What's your name?” A mouse of woman sat in Hunter's lap, looking very afraid.
Hunter whispered in her ear, obviously encouraging her.
“Mindy," She said smally.
Bailey beamed. “Nice to meet you Mindy. I love your shoes.”
Mindy smiled. “Thank you. I got them on sale.”
Donique's ears perked. “Sale?”
Mindy shrunk at her enthusiasm. Hunter gently encouraged her.
“U-Um yes. I got them for 15$”
Donique was floored. So was Bailey.
“15? You're joking right?”
Mindy frowned. Why would she be joking.
Hunter whispered in her ear. “It's expression. It just means it's unbelievable."
Mindy nodded.
“No. I got them from Gino's in the mall.”
Bailey frowned. “I've never seen a Gino's in the mall.”
Mindy's eyes sparkled. Hunter saw dollar signs floating away. He waved goodbye.
“Oh my God you have been missing out,” Mindy began to come out of her shell, but only within that small circle. Everyone else still scared her.
“Hunter can you take us please?”
Hunter's wallet groaned.
“Sure, Mindy-Mine. But not now.”
Mindy blushed at the endearment.
“Do you have a phone?” Bailey asked.
Mindy scrunched up her nose.
“Hunter, what's my number?”
He rolled his eyes, reciting the number.
“You have to learn your number, Mindy."
“I only just got it yesterday.”
“I'll text you.” The two girls added the number into their phones.
Then the exchanged numbers. They both texted Mindy.
“We have to talk. You girls are awesome!” Donique squealed in a Donique way.
Dayton grinned.
Even Mindy smiled. “I'm so glad I came. I was kinda scared, but you seem nice.”
“I need more girlfriends, all I have are boys,” Bailey complained.
