I have never been out of the Crimson Estate.
That’s why walking through the forest from the estate, is extremely scary.
At different points, I hear the sound of some wild animal growling. When I step on a branch, I shut my eyes, bracing myself to be torn apart by some psychopath hiding in the night.
But somehow, I make it through the forest and find myself on a long lonely road. I walk several more miles, but still don’t see a single soul in sight.
My feet are sore, and my thighs ache from the distance I’ve walked.
An anguished sob leaks past my throat as I remember the aloofness on Alessandro’s face. He must have been planning this for long. The past four years was all a lie!
And Jasper, who I’d taken as a friend, he couldn’t even come out and warn me clearly.
Now I was made a spectacle in front of the whole gang.
I had always tried so hard to go unnoticed. Keep my head down, do my job, stay in the background, be exactly what Alessandro needed and nothing more.
All that effort. All the nights I cried myself to sleep, when others would trample on me. Then I’d wake up the next day, comforting myself that I had to lie low to play spy for Alessandro.
But the moment he became the Don, he threw me away!
Just thinking about it, makes my feet stop hurting.
Though that isn’t a good sign.
My limbs grow heavier by the second.
The world sways in my vision, my legs give out and I collapse by the side of the road. I lay on the floor, unable to move further in the dark. My mind slowly slipping away to unconsciousness.
This is really it.
This is how it ends for me.
Just when I’m about to pass out, headlights appear in the distance. I squeeze my eyes shot, wincing from the sudden glow.
I hear the sound of a car’s engine, and I wonder what a car is doing here so far away from the city.
The Crimson Estate is the only inhabitance close by, and only the Don and his family are permitted to use cars.
The red car that’s approaching doesn’t belong to Alessandro’s family though.
It moves slowly, then rolls to a stop, a few feet away from where I am. The engine cuts and the door opens.
In the dark, I can only make out the silhouette of a tall man. He stands beside the car then approaches me on the curb.
I look back up at him, and I’m shocked by his eyes. They’re an ethereal green and almost seem to glow in the dark
Neither of says anything. He tilts his head, looking at me with interest.
“Now what do we have here.”
He looks at me with amusement. And then, to my complete bewilderment, the corner of his mouth moves.
