That night, Christopher tossed and turned until the early hours, barely managing to drift off.
He hadn't been asleep for long when his mother-in-law's voice cut through his sleep.
"Christopher, get up and take Mia to work."
Christopher, still half-asleep, thought he was dreaming and turned over to continue sleeping.
Just then, the door swung open, and Jessica walked in, giving him a sharp kick.
"Are you deaf? Didn't you hear what I said?" Jessica stood with her arms crossed, looking down at him.
Despite being in her forties, Jessica maintained herself well, looking as if she were in her thirties, oozing mature allure.
Feeling a sharp pain in his back, Christopher groggily got up from the floor, confused by his mother-in-law's annoyed glare.
Did the sun rise in the west today? In over two years of marriage, he had never appeared in public with Mia because she found him embarrassing. And now, she wanted him to take her to work?
At that moment, Mia, dressed in her business attire, rushed over urgently, "Are you deaf? I asked you to take me to work. Are you unwilling?"
Hearing this, Christopher nodded vigorously, "Willing, willing!"
Mia was frustrated with her investment woes. Her poor investment decisions had led to a financial shortfall for the company, threatening its closure.
With an emergency shareholders' meeting called today, as chairwoman, she had to be there.
But upon waking up, she realized Megan had taken her car.
With no other choice, she asked Christopher to take her.
Christopher changed clothes and hopped on his little electric scooter, taking Mia to the company.
......
"Hurry up! If we're late today, you can pack your bags and get out," Mia snapped, watching car after car overtake them.
Just as she finished speaking, she felt herself lurch backward as the scooter suddenly sped up. In a panic, Mia instinctively wrapped her arms around Christopher's waist.
Christopher's body shivered. After more than two years of marriage, was this their first intimate contact? The sudden intimacy sent his heart racing, as if he were injected with adrenaline.
Soon, they arrived at the company entrance.
Mia checked the time and breathed a sigh of relief—they weren't late.
Just as she was about to get off and head inside, a BMW X5 pulled up next to the scooter, and a man in a suit stepped out.
Michael adjusted his suit, walked up to Mia, and pointed at Christopher, "Mia, who is this guy?"
Mia got off the scooter and softly replied, "He's Christopher."
"Oh, so he's your useless husband." Michael shot Christopher a disdainful look. Two years ago, their wedding had stirred all of Riverwest City. Who in Riverwest didn't know that the Walker Family's darling had married a nobody?
He took off his jacket and handed it to Mia, "Mia, you must be freezing on the way here. Put this on. I also got you a gift."
With that, Michael opened the trunk and pulled out a beautifully crafted box.
Inside the box was a stunning sapphire necklace, perfectly complementing Mia's fair neck.
Although the Walker Family had never ventured into the jewelry business, a woman's love for beauty is universal. If Mia wasn't mistaken, this necklace was from the "Castle in the Sky" series, crafted by the renowned French jewelry designer, Master Alan.
This exclusive series consisted of only 18 necklaces, and it was said that no woman could resist such a gift. Moreover, these necklaces weren't something money could easily buy.
The necklace in Michael's box, though a convincing replica, revealed its true nature upon closer inspection. The sapphire's color was slightly off, and its surface lacked the smoothness of a genuine piece, unmistakably marking it as a fake.
"Mia, I know how much you love this necklace. It's my fault for not getting the real one," Michael said, handing over the necklace. "Though it's not genuine, I spent 200,000 to have a famous domestic artisan craft this replica. Wear it for now, and give me half a month. I'll get the real one for you."
"No need," Mia replied coolly as she took the necklace. "It's impossible to buy. 'Castle in the Sky' was Master Alan's final masterpiece. They're either in collections or already worn. Last year, one was auctioned for a staggering 20 million dollars. So, don't waste your time. This one looks beautiful enough."
"Gulp..." Michael swallowed hard. Twenty million dollars, over a hundred million in Chinese yuan. His entire fortune was only 20 million; even selling himself wouldn't cover it.
"Honey, this gift is too extravagant. We shouldn't accept such a lavish present without earning it. If you like it, I'll buy it for you," Christopher said, snatching the necklace from Mia's hand and flinging it to the ground. With that, he took Mia's hand and headed toward the company.
"Christopher, what are you doing?" Mia whispered urgently.
They were at the company entrance, and as the chairwoman, she couldn't afford to lose her temper recklessly.
She tried to pull her hand away, but Christopher held it firmly.
"Hey, you i***t, stop right there!" Michael shouted, panicking. Damn it, he had spent 200,000 on that custom piece. What if it got damaged?
"Didn't you hear me tell you to stop?" Michael stormed over, pointing a finger at Christopher's face. "If that necklace is damaged, you couldn't pay for it even if you sold yourself."
"First, Mia is my wife, so kindly keep your distance."
"Second..." Christopher raised two fingers and tossed Michael's jacket onto the ground. "If my wife's cold, she can wear my jacket."
"Third, it's my responsibility to gift my wife what she likes. And my wife is too beautiful to wear fakes. Tonight, I'll have the genuine 'Castle in the Sky' for her."
"Are you out of your mind? Everyone in Riverwest City knows you're a loser. Riding around on a little electric scooter, and you dare to act all high and mighty in front of me?!" Michael was fuming. As the heir of the Ford Family, no one had ever dared speak to him like that.
What infuriated him even more was that before he could finish, Christopher had already whisked Mia into the company, completely ignoring him.
"Damn, that loser!" Michael's anger boiled over, and he kicked the electric scooter, flipping it over.
Inside Unique Creations Ltd., in the chairwoman's office.
Mia sat in the executive chair, glaring coldly at Christopher. Her lips pressed into a thin line, she was too furious to speak.
Michael had been in the construction business, backed by the Bennett Family of Riverwest!
Her company, Unique Creations Ltd., desperately needed an 8 million investment, and she had hoped Michael would be the investor.
Now, thanks to Christopher's antics today, Michael was undoubtedly enraged.
Mia recalled a saying: "More trouble than it's worth." She regretted ever letting him bring her to the company. The more she thought about it, the angrier she became. She shot Christopher a withering glare and barked, "Why are you still here? Get lost!"
"Okay," Christopher replied, feeling wronged, and turned to leave the office.
Seeing him so meek only fueled Mia's anger further. She felt like biting him. Over the past two years, her friends had all married men who were either outstanding or industry elites, at the very least financially independent. Unlike her husband, who still relied on her support.
Mia's frustration surged like a dam about to burst. Tonight was the Walker Family's annual event, and she knew her family would seize every opportunity to mock her.
"Who the hell smashed my electric scooter?!" Christopher shouted downstairs at Unique Creations Ltd.
That little scooter had been with him for over two years, faithfully taking him to buy groceries every day without a break. Seeing it wrecked like this was heartbreaking. It had to be that i***t Weiming Dong.
As Christopher gritted his teeth, a group of women, clad in sharp business suits and clicking high heels, approached. They were Mia's colleagues, pointing and whispering from afar.
"Hey, isn't that Mia's husband?"
"Yes, it is. I was at their wedding."
"No way, Mia's husband rides an electric scooter? That's so shabby! It's embarrassing for Mia."
The women couldn't help but laugh.
Christopher, oblivious to their laughter, sighed deeply as he lifted his battered scooter. "Don't worry, I'll make sure to get back at them for this. Just wait..."
With that, he pulled out his phone and dialed his family's number.
