Chapter 9: VIP Customer

"What, you're not willing?" Zion frowned, questioning, "As a member of the Shadowcrest Sect, serving the family is your mission. The company you managed lost eight million yuan in the first half of the year. This is your chance to make amends, or else, according to family rules, you'll be demoted." Laura pressed her lips together, at a loss for words. She never expected Zion to use this against her. Yes, she had lost eight million yuan, but over the years, she had earned the family ten times that amount. "Grandmother, I..." The matriarch of the Shadowcrest Sect waved her hand dismissively, saying, "Zion is right. Mistakes must be punished, and achievements rewarded. Since the company you managed lost eight million yuan, you'll be responsible for negotiating the deal with Vision Entertainment this time. Consider it a chance to make amends." After speaking, she glanced around at everyone present and continued, "Remember, the family rewards achievements and punishes mistakes. Keep this in mind." "Yes!" Everyone echoed in agreement. "Alright, you may all leave." As soon as the matriarch finished speaking, everyone stood up, relieved that they hadn't been chosen. They all cast sympathetic glances at Laura. If this deal didn't go through, Laura's family would surely be demoted. Not only would their family dividends be halved, but her position as chairman would also drop to a managerial level. On the way home, Laura's mind was a whirlwind of thoughts. Negotiating with Vision Entertainment seemed like an impossible task. What was she supposed to do? After pondering for a long time without finding a solution, she decided to stop worrying. She called her best friend, Megan, and the two sat on the couch, chatting. After a while, Laura felt a bit better. "Megan, thank you for cheering me up," Laura said, raising her glass of red wine and clinking it lightly with Megan's. Megan took a sip of wine and smiled, "We're best friends, no need for thanks." "By the way, Laura, where's your husband?" "Oh, he went out early this morning and hasn't come back yet." "I really admire you, Laura," Megan said, swirling her wine. "You've put up with such a useless man for two years. If it were me, I'd have divorced him long ago." "Not to mention anything else, your company is in a crisis, and as a man, he should at least come up with a couple of million, if not eight. But he can't even do that, nor does he even ask about it. That's just too much." Seeing Megan's fiery indignation, Laura said nothing, just kept drinking her wine on the couch. Just then, the door creaked open. Christopher burst in, clutching a burlap sack, looking like he had just been fished out of a river, completely soaked and filthy. Ah, it's all Lily's fault for wrecking the car. Otherwise, I wouldn't have had to ride a shared bike home. The weather's been acting up. It rains whenever it wants, leaving me drenched like a drowned rat. "Speak of the devil, and here he is," Megan said, casting him a disdainful glance. Christopher didn't bother to look her way, flung the snakeskin bag onto the couch with a careless toss, and sprinted upstairs to take a shower. Just then, Jessica stormed out of the bedroom, asking, "Is that good-for-nothing back? Where is he?" "Auntie, he went upstairs," Megan replied. "Hmph, he still has the nerve to come back!" Jessica's expression was as cold as ice as she sat on the couch, waiting for Christopher to come down. As Jessica's patience wore thin, Christopher finally appeared, now in fresh clothes. "Christopher, get your butt over here!" Jessica commanded, crossing her legs on the couch. "Mom... I mean, Auntie, do you need something?" Remembering that Jessica didn't allow him to call her "Mom," he corrected himself. Jessica shot Christopher a frosty glare. "You have no respect for me anymore, do you? Do you even see me? I asked you to apologize to Su Hai at the annual meeting, and you dared to walk away. Why did you come back if you left?" Christopher took a deep breath, deciding it wasn't worth the fight. She was angry, and nothing he said would help. Seeing his carefree smirk, Jessica's anger boiled over. She pointed at the wet floor and the dirty bag on the couch, saying, "Look at the mess you've turned this house into. Why don't you clean up this mess and toss that filthy bag in the trash?" Throw the bag in the trash? Ha, with a smirk, Christopher strolled over to Mia, saying, "Babe, I can fix your company's mess..." Before he could finish, Megan interrupted him with a mocking laugh. "Oh, you actually give a damn about Mia's company? I thought you'd lost your sense of decency. You live off her, use her, and if you were truly grateful, you'd find a way to help her out instead of being a nuisance... Do you even realize the kind of pressure Mia's dealing with?" "It's alright, Megan, I'm okay," Mia said, putting down her wine glass and massaging her temples. Despite Christopher's uselessness, he was still her husband. She could criticize him, but it didn't feel right for others to do so. "Megan, you're too nice, and that's why he keeps taking advantage," Megan said, hugging Mia sympathetically. "I genuinely feel for you, silly girl. If you ask me, since you two haven't even had a proper relationship, you should divorce him and find a man you can rely on." "Megan." Christopher couldn't hold back any longer. Urging Mia to divorce him right to his face was something no man could tolerate. He locked eyes with Megan and said, "What makes you so sure I can't help my wife?" "You?" Megan sneered, not taking his words seriously at all. "I recall you saying just the other day that if I could come up with eight million, you'd call me 'Dad,'" Christopher said, looking at Megan. "I wonder if you remember saying that." "Yes, I did say that," Megan sneered. "If you've got the nerve to bring out the cash, I'll call you 'Dad.' But if you can't, then cut Mia loose and divorce her." "Megan..." Mia gently pulled on Megan's arm. That's eight million we're talking about. She only gives Christopher two hundred a day; how could he possibly come up with that much money? "Alright, let's do this." Christopher chuckled, strolling over to grab the burlap sack from the sofa. "But this time, you might be in for a surprise." With that, he flipped the bag over. "Thud, thud." The contents of the bag cascaded out. "Hum." In that instant, Lily's eyes went wide, completely floored by the sight before her. The room was dead silent, except for the quickened breaths of the three women. Piles of cash stacked high on the table, each bundle hitting them like a punch to the gut, leaving them speechless. "Money... so much cash!" Just then, Tang Jing stepped forward, disbelief etched across her face. "Where... where did this money come from?" Mia gaped at the bundles of cash scattered across the floor, unable to find her voice. As she took in the scene, Lily felt a shiver run down her spine, the sight of the red bills left her speechless. Her legs began to tremble uncontrollably. So... much cash. Though she couldn't tell exactly how much, the sheer volume of cash covering the table had to be at least two or three million. She had never seen so much money laid out before her at once; the sight was staggering, leaving her at a loss for words. "This is three million. Since I didn't make an appointment, I could only withdraw three million on short notice. The remaining five million I'll transfer to you via mobile." As he spoke, Christopher pulled out a cheap imitation phone he had bought for 300 bucks from a second-hand market. "This phone's slow as molasses, hang tight." Christopher felt a bit embarrassed; the old phone was sluggish, but he'd replace it tomorrow. After a few agonizing minutes, he finally set the phone down and said, "Alright, I've transferred it. It should be in your account shortly." As soon as he finished speaking, Mia's phone chimed. She instinctively pulled it out to check. "Dear VIP client, a transfer of 5,000,000.00 yuan has been credited to your account."
