ELEANOR THREE YEARS LATER Scars. Some last a lifetime. Some others fade with time. Running a finger over my cheek, I feel a bit astonished to see it all smooth. There used to be an ugly scar there, which haunts me and keeps the image of that frightening night bare in my heart. The night where those goons almost r***d me, that inauspicious night. Can’t believe it’s been three years already. A knock on the door gets me out of my thoughts. "Please, come in," I say, still staring at my reflection in the mirror. I watch the door open through the mirror and Mrs. Tracy walks in, coming to stand behind me. "What's taking so long?" Smiling nervously, I give myself another unsure glance. "How do I look, Mrs. Tracy?" She beams, making me turn to her so she can have a closer look at my outfit. "You look very beautiful, dear. But you’re missing something vital." The knot in my stomach tightens, causing a frown to cloak my face. Just like I thought, my outfit is wack. This whole morning has been a nervous wreck, and yesterday remains the most unsettling yet surprising day I’ve witnessed in three years. For three years, I’ve worked as a janitor in the biggest company here in Red Javes Pack, owned by Alpha Derek, the Alpha of this Pack. Being a janitor may not be the best work out there but it helps me deal with my financial luggage, and for that, I love my job. But then yesterday, I got promoted to being the direct secretary of Alpha Derek. I still can’t believe it, and I swear I was very giddy about it until I opened my wardrobe this morning and realized that I didn’t have the right outfit for the job. My wardrobe is filled with old and worn-out thrift wear, which doesn’t come close to the sophisticated outfits those secretaries parade to the company. I’ve ransacked my wardrobe and the neatest outfit I could find is this set I’m putting on. Blue pleated skirt, a black shirt, a black scarf around my neck, and a black, three-inch stiletto heel. I don’t have a chest of jewels so I just settled with the pearl necklace and earrings I got a year ago. The outfit looks nice, but I’m still not so confident about going to the company in it. I twirl slightly in front of the mirror and I can’t help but notice that the black color is a little faded. Maybe that’s what Mrs. Tracy wants to say. "Your outfit is beautiful, but you lack the confidence that should go with it," she says instead, and I take a second from obsessing over my outfit and just look at her. Tears well up in my eyes. She smiles, cupping my face. "My miracle baby, you may be a mother now, but to me, you’ll forever be my baby. The beautiful baby I never knew I needed until she came along. You’re so beautiful and elegant, it doesn’t matter what you wear. That's why it hurts me when I see you with so little confidence." The tears in my eyes drop at her sweet words. I exhale happily, hugging her so tight. "I’m so sorry, Mrs. Tracy. I didn’t mean to be so nervous. I just feel like I shouldn’t have accepted the promotion." "What? But why?" Her words echo the worries that would be etched on her face if I were looking at her right now. "First off, my colleagues think that I seduced Alpha Derek into giving me the promotion. They all turned on me yesterday, and it doesn’t feel nice. And now, this wardrobe disaster. I don’t know but it’s all making me feel like I don’t deserve such a high position. At least not yet." "Don’t say that," she gasps, pulling from the hug. Her hands cup my face again and her fingers wipe my tears. "You’re a very efficient and capable woman who’s been through so much hell and still hasn't given up. You deserve the position and more, so do not pay any attention to what they say. Deep down, you know you’re the best choice for the position, among all of them. so why should you be bothered by what they think?" Her words are soothing and instantly fill me with so much confidence. "Thank you so much, Mrs. Tracy." "You’re welcome, baby. Now hurry up. The kids are getting impatient." "Shoot! Please tell them I’ll be down in a minute. Please, Mrs. Tracy. Try to put in a good word for me, or those kids are going to give me an earful." I pout with puppy eyes. She laughs, heading for the door. ‘I’ll try, but you have to join us soon." "Give me a minute, and thank you!’ She shuts the door, and I take another minute to stare at my reflection in the mirror. This time, with a bit of confidence, just like Mrs. Tracy suggested. She always has her way of making me feel better. I may have been betrayed by my best friend and my boyfriend, but I’d love to think that the good heavens compensated me with Mrs. Tracy. Meeting her that night when I was on the verge of being r***d by those goons had felt so unreal. She’d heard my screams and came to my aid with a couple of passers-by. They fought off those goons and Mrs, Tracy brought me here, to her house. She nursed my wounds and took care of me for days. She said I could leave when I was all better or I could stay with her. She had no kids and no family. Choosing to stay with her remains the best decision I ever made. I didn’t bother searching for Kate anymore. I just stayed with Mrs. Tracy, and when I gave birth to my twins, she gave them as much love as a legal guardian would. One more twirl in front of the mirror and I hurried downstairs. The twins had their curious doe eyes watching me as I took my seat opposite theirs. Mrs. Tracy passed me my cup of coffee. "I’m so sorry, sweeties. Mummy had to take a little longer getting dressed today." I say, sipping from my cup. "Why are you all dressed like that, Mummy?" Lizzie, my daughter, asks in her sing-song, mesmerizing voice. Her curly blonde hair is packed up with a pink scrunchie, accentuating her round, chubby face. While she got my eyes, the rest of her beautiful features were a bit alien, especially her hair. I’m not sure whose gene passed on to her – my parents I never got to know or her faceless father? It’s pathetic that the only thing I recall about him is his voice. And right now, that memory is fading, regardless of how hopelessly I’m clinging to it. Because that’s the only proof that he happened. His voice, that’s all the proof I got. Forgetting it is just sick and makes me low-key frustrated. "How am I dressed, baby?" I ask, grabbing a cookie from my plate and munching on it. "Like you’re going to a party," Lynn replies, with a mouthful of cookies. For a three-year-old, Lynn is a bit too intense. His bossy aura and dominative stance make me wonder sometimes if I’m miscalculating his age. He’s very blunt too, which also makes me wonder if he took after his father because I’m not so blunt. I’m the complete opposite of that. And as embarrassing as it may sound, I’m pretty careful with him. Getting on his bad side just doesn’t feel nice, ever. I learned that the hard way. "What do you know about parties, baby?" I chip in carefully. "I know they dress nice to parties," "You’re right. but it’s not just parties you dress nice to." I bite on another cookie. Lizzie opens her mouth, gesturing that I feed her. I chuckle and feed her the cookie in my hand. She giggles, munching on it. I try to feed Lynn but he shakes his head with a frown. I refrain instantly. There’s no point insisting. He hates being treated like a baby. "So where are you going, Mummy? Just tell us already." He drawls, raising his hands in a dramatic gesture and rolling his eyes. Mrs. Tracy laughs. How could she find that funny? But then again, she always finds what the kids do extremely funny, even when they’re being pretty mean. She just loves them so much that it doesn’t matter what they do. She’s always gonna have that admiration in her eyes. "To the office, baby," I reply calmly. "But you never dress this pretty to the office," Lizzie says. I smile at the fact that she just called me pretty. "Thanks, baby, and yes, I don't, but that’s because I used to work as a janitor-" "What are you gonna be working as now?" Lynn interrupts. "I was gonna say it. You didn’t have to interrupt me, baby." "You're taking too long to say it." He mutters, fiddling with his cookie. I sigh, ignoring him. "I got promoted. I'll be working as Alpha Derek's secretary from now on." "Really? Alpha Derek is now your boss?" "He's always been my boss, baby. But yeah, now he'll be my direct boss." "Woah!" Both of them gasp simultaneously. "Does it mean you'll have more money now?" Lizzie asks, with a sweet smile. I chuckle. "Sure, baby. I'll have more money to get you that Barbie dress you wanted." "Yippee!" She squeals, doing a happy dance in her seat. It gets Mrs. Tracy laughing hard. "Me too, Mummy. I want a cowboy hat. And a bicycle—" "Yeah, Mummy, me too. I want a bicycle." "Shut up, I said it first!" Lynn snaps. "I also want new pants. And I want a Daddy! It's boring with just you. I want a Daddy, like my friends." My smile fades, getting replaced by a hurtful look. I drop the cup and hide my shivering, clammy hands under the table. Tears haunt my eyes and I fear they'll spill in front of the kids. I don't want that. "Mrs. Tracy, please take the kids to school." "Sure." She stands and gestures at them to follow her. "C'mon, kids. Let's go brush your teeth and head to school. You don't wanna be late." Lynn rushes to me and kisses my cheek. "Bye, Mummy." "Love you, son." And I really do love him. I just wish he'd be less blunt with me. Lizzie kisses me with her chubby smile. "Bye Mummy. And I do want a Daddy too, but I'm always gonna love you more." Her words melt my heart. "Love you, baby." They both race down the hallway with Mrs. Tracy trailing behind them. One glance at the wall clock gets me sprinting out of the house and hopping into the first taxi I see. I arrive at the company twenty minutes later and hurry for the elevator. Alpha Derek's having his first meeting in ten minutes. I don't wanna be late. I joined the elevator with two random workers. They're talking random stuff while I just mind my business. But then my interest peaked when they mentioned Night Howl Pack, my former Pack. "I heard their Alpha will be here for a meeting with Alpha Derek." One of the ladies says. Our Alpha? Alpha Damian? What will he be doing here? Not that it's any of my business, and neither am I a fan of his. He may be our Alpha but his ugly reputation precedes him. His ruthless and cold demeanor is a popular tale, making him one of the most hated men in the Pack. I never got the chance to meet him though, and I'm not at all excited to. Such a guy is bad news. I'd rather keep my distance. The elevator door opens and the two ladies step out. A group of men approach the elevator and my heart stills at the familiar, striking voice. A while ago, I thought my memories of the voice were fading. But right now, why do I feel so overwhelmed by this voice? Why does it bring the memories of that night rushing into my mind? Two of the men stand in front of the elevator but one of them holds my gaze in an intense stare that sends ripples down my spine.
