THE NEWS BREAKS

CHAPTER 18 The morning light came through the office windows and hit Sophia’s face first. She woke up to Ethan’s arms around her and the smell of coffee. And panic. Ethan was already sitting up. His phone was in his hand. His jaw was tight. The same look he had in the boardroom. “What is it?” Sophia asked, sitting up. The blazer fell off her. Ethan didn’t answer. He just turned the phone toward her. Her stomach dropped. It was the photo from Noah’s penthouse. Her and Ethan on the couch. His arm around her waist. They were looking at each other. Not the camera. The headline under it made her feel sick. `HART CEO’S SECRET WIFE EXPOSED. CONTRACT MARRIAGE SCANDAL ROCKS BOARD.` Below that: `Sources claim Ethan Hart married nurse Sophia Bennett for shares. Abandoned fiancée Victoria Lane.` Sophia’s hands started to shake. “Who posted this?” “Someone took Noah’s post and twisted it,” Ethan said. His voice was flat. Controlled. “Victoria’s PR team. Or Uncle Richard. Doesn’t matter.” “It matters to me,” Sophia whispered. “People think I’m a gold digger. They think we lied.” Ethan set the phone down. “We did lie. At first.” Sophia flinched. “Don’t.” “I’m not saying it to hurt you,” Ethan said quickly. He turned to face her fully. “I’m saying it because I’m not going to let them define us. Not again.” Sophia stood up. Her legs felt weak. “I have to go home. To my mom. She’ll see this.” “I’ll drive you,” Ethan said. “No.” The word came out sharper than she meant. “I need to do this alone. I need to breathe.” Ethan’s face shuttered. “Okay.” Sophia grabbed her bag and left before she could cry. --- The drive to her mom’s apartment was 20 minutes. It felt like 20 hours. Her phone was blowing up. Lila. Noah. Unknown numbers. Comments on the article she didn’t want to read. When she got there, her mom was in the kitchen. Making tea. The TV was off. “Sophia,” her mom said. She looked tired. “Sit.” Sophia sat. She couldn’t meet her mom’s eyes. “I saw it,” her mom said gently. “The internet is cruel, baby.” “It’s true,” Sophia said. Her voice cracked. “At first. It was a contract. For your bills. For the shares.” Her mom reached across the table and took her hand. “And now?” Sophia thought about 2 AM on the office couch. About “my side is cold.” About Ethan burning eggs. “Now I love him,” Sophia said. Tears finally fell. “And I think he loves me. But what if no one believes us?” Her mom squeezed her hand. “Then you show them. You don’t owe the world a performance. You owe each other the truth.” Sophia cried then. Really cried. For the first time since the hospital. --- By the time she got back to the mansion at 4 PM, there were reporters outside the gate. Ethan was in his office. He hadn’t changed. Still in yesterday’s shirt. He looked up when she came in. Relief flashed across his face before he could hide it. “You’re back,” he said. “I’m back,” Sophia said. She crossed the room and stopped in front of his desk. “What are we doing?” Ethan stood. “I called Noah. We’re doing a statement. Tonight. Live. No script.” Sophia nodded. “Okay.” “Are you okay?” Ethan asked. He reached out and tucked her hair behind her ear. His fingers lingered. “No,” Sophia admitted. “But I will be. With you.” Ethan exhaled like he’d been holding his breath. “Then we do this together.” --- At 8 PM they were in the Hart Industries lobby. Cameras. Lights. Noah standing off to the side giving Ethan a thumbs up. Ethan took Sophia’s hand. Laced their fingers. He didn’t let go. The reporters started shouting the second they stepped up. “Mr. Hart! Is it true it was a contract?” “Mrs. Hart! Did you do this for money?” Ethan raised a hand. The room went quiet. “My name is Ethan Hart,” he said. His voice was steady. “Three months ago I married Sophia Bennett. Yes. It started because of a contract. Because my mother was sick and I was desperate and stupid.” A murmur went through the crowd. Sophia squeezed his hand. “But somewhere between cold dinners and burnt eggs and her telling me I was an i***t to my face,” Ethan continued, “it stopped being a contract. It became real.” He looked down at Sophia. Only her. “I love my wife,” Ethan said. “Not because of shares. Not because of the board. Because she stayed when I was awful. Because she’s the only person who ever told me no. Because she’s home.” The cameras flashed. Sophia stepped forward. Her voice shook but she didn’t look away. “I’m not a gold digger,” she said. “I’m a nurse. I took care of people. I took care of him. And I’m not ashamed that we started messy. We’re just trying to get it right now. Together.” She reached up and kissed him. Right there. In front of everyone. It wasn’t planned. It wasn’t for the cameras. It was just her choosing him. When they pulled apart, the room was silent. Noah was grinning like an i***t. Ethan whispered against her lips, “Contract free.” Sophia smiled. “Contract free.” --- Back upstairs, hours later, the internet was still exploding. But the comments were different now. `#TeamHart` was trending. Ethan pulled Sophia into his arms on the couch. No pillow wall. No space. His phone buzzed one last time. Uncle Richard. `You think that fixed it? The board meets Friday.` Ethan deleted the text. He looked at Sophia. She was already asleep on his chest. “Let them try,” he whispered.
