Chapter 10

I was beyond upset at the moment. All i could see was red. As I ran along the woods, with small specs of dirt, twigs and leaves sticking to my fur, I wondered how everything went wrong. What was with that abnormal behaviour from Cedric? He had done everything needed to get acquainted with his abilities and then he had to ruin everything by suddenly taking off without a hint of explanation. But all things considered, for a werewolf that just got his abilities, he was pretty fast. How he covered so much ground within seconds and maintained the gap between us was amazing. I would have been impressed if I wasn't in a fiery mood and planning to chew his head out when I got hold of him. Figuratively speaking, of course. Speaking of Cedric. After minutes that seemed like eternity, I finally detected his scent. It was getting stronger which meant I was close to him. 'Finally,' I mentally exhaled. I wasn't sure if my relief was because I was worried about him or because I was tired of just running. I finally got out of the woods and found myself in an unfamiliar location. It was an open field, similar to acorn field. But this field looked wilder. It looked like a battle ground. In the centre of the field, I finally saw Cedric. He sat on his hind legs and was sniffing the air, his grey fur bristling at intervals. His left ear would drop and then stand at alert only for the right one to do the same. I stretched and shook the leaves and dirt vigorously out of my fur. 'Cedric?' I sent a mind link to the occupied grey wolf, walking catiously towards him. Cedric didn't reply. He continued sniffing the air. 'Cedric!' I repeated, my tone sharper now. 'Not now, Tori.' Cedric didn't turn around. His tone sounded dismissive. 'Not now?' I growled in anger. 'Are you for real right now? You just take off for no reason, leaving us worried and now I find you in this weird place and you're acting like everything is okay? Why the hell did you run off like that?' Cedric snorted and turned to face me. He obviously saw me poised and my tail stiff meaning i wasn't there to joke about. The visible glint in my golden eyes was enough pointer. 'Yeah, sorry about that.' His ears dropped. ' I don't know why but I caught something. There was this weird feeling that I had. It's kind of strange, but I think it drew me here.' 'Cedric.' I sat on my hind legs and tilted my head sideways. 'You're not making any sense right now. Are you talking of a scent?' 'No, not a scent.' He shook his head. 'Well, kind of a mix of a scent and a gut feeling.' 'That dragged you to this kind of place?' He nodded. I was now confused. I never heard of something like this. The only thing I knew was scents and mate bond. What in the world was this feeling he was talking about and why come to this kind of location in the first place? Speaking of which, I decided to survey the field again. Some parts of the grassy field illuminated by the moon were brown. My eyes then landed at the trees and widened in terror. If I was in my human form, it would be obvious for anyone who cared to look how white my face would have been. 'Oh, no!' I quickly stood on all fours. My whimpers echoed into the night. 'Hey, what's wrong?' Cedric stood up and moved towards me. 'Cedric, we need to get out of here! We are not supposed to be here!' My mind link became stronger. I saw him visibly cringe at the volume of my voice. 'What are you talking about?' he said. 'Look at the trees!' I tilted my head towards the mentioned. He followed my eyes and he gasped. On most of the trees that surrounded the field were large claw marks. Some of the marks were recent. Most were old. 'Cedric.' I faced him. 'This is another werewolf territory.' As if to confirm a words, we detected multiple scents and quick footsteps coming from the other side of the field, accompanied by angry growls. Before we could make a move, a group of men emerged from the woods in front of us accompanied by large wolves of different colours but all with the familiar glowing, golden, menacing eyes. From behind them, other wolves emerged blocking any means of escape. I looked at the men who came with the wolves. All of them were large and muscular. However, one stood out from them. He had thick dark hair on his head, heavy facial hair and mean looking grey eyes. He looked like he was Dad's age and wore grey jeans with a black tank top revealing a tattoo across his chest, leading to his left bicep. 'This must be their Alpha,' I mentally gulped, staring at the imposing figure. "Why have you come here?" The man bellowed, his voice sending a tremor that nearly shook the ground. 'It..It was an accident,' I stuttered, backing a bit. Cedric, however stood his ground, and his eyes glinted in defiance. The man glared harder at him. "Are you trying to mount a challenge here, boy?" He yelled, his eyes blazing with fury. "You dare step into my territory and you want to further add to your crimes?" 'Cedric, what are you doing?' I barked at him. 'Stand down.' Cedric ignored me and continued to glare at the imposing figure in front of us. The growls and heated gazes of the other werewolves towards him was enough clue. But for some reason, Cedric didn’t seem to get the memo. He suddenly charged towards the man. 'Cedric!' I barked but it was too late. He had made his move before I could think further. And in five seconds, he was a few inches to the man. However, the big man obviously had experience and leadership on his side. Quick glances to his left and right was enough to end the impromptu fight. Cedric yelped, suddenly finding himself pinned to the floor by two werewolves almost twice his size. One pinned his head to the ground and the other leaned on his hind legs. 'Stop, you're hurting him!' I barked. The man sent a heated gaze my way, silencing any further protest i was going to make. "Weak and pathetic," he tisked, returning his gaze to the dominated Cedric. "This just proved how much of a greenhorn you are, boy. I could have taken you down by myself but I wouldn't bring myself that low." 'Please, let him go,' I begged. "Perhaps,I would." The man folded his arms. "Or perhaps not. But he has committed two crimes. Trespassing and attacking an Alpha in his own territory." The man now known as the Alpha brought his gaze back to Cedric. "I have the mind to kill you on the spot right now for what you just did," he growled. He lifted his gaze and then saw the fear in my eyes. "But I have bigger problems on my plate," he added. "The both of you are coming with me." He nodded to the wolves who had Cedric pinned to the ground and they released their hold. Cedric stood up, the look of defiance now gone from his golden eyes and replaced with fear. The Alpha frowned and whistled aloud to his human comrades. They nodded and they all began the journey out of the field. I jolted as a wolf nudged me from behind. I complied and moved forward, catching up with Cedric who was still flanked by the wolves. As I passed by him, I sent a heated gaze towards him. 'Nice going,' I growled. Cedric didn't reply. Submission and regret overwhelmed him as we all walked into the woods. A few minutes later, we reached what looked like a swamp. We marvelled at the numerous R.V's and cabins. We also spotted humans and wolves around the place. Some of the humans turned their attention to us and had confused looks on their faces. My heart swelled at the sight of a toddler playing with the south of a big brown wolf. But I quickly averted my eyes and focused on the matter at hand. Cedric and I were still in trouble. The Alpha stopped by two R.Vs and turned to us. "Go in and get changed," he ordered. " The R.V's have some clothing which are kept for rogues who are on probation and the needy. You might see some which may fit you." As soon as we entered an R.V each, I saw Alpha turn to two men and gave them looks which portrayed one message: Stay on guard. They nodded in affirmative and he walked away. Minutes later, we emerged out of the R.V's in human form and with a change of clothing. I now wore a plain white T-shirt with Jean shorts. Cedric wore a black T-shirt with white shorts. The men on guard made way for us to pass but still kept their eyes on us. "Where's the Alpha?" Cedric asked. "Business matters," One of the men replied curtly. The second just glared at them. I nearly shrunk from their withering gazes. These men looked like they could crush a rock in half. I might have a temper or a sassy attitude but here, that obviously won't get me anywhere. "Both of you, sit on that bench over there." The first guard tilted his head towards a wooden bench a few feet away. We complied and sat down on it, avoiding the gazes of the guards who kept their eyes on us. "This is a nightmare," I grumbled. Cedric opened his mouth to retort but quickly closed it as a girl came out of a cabin and walked towards us. We took in her appearance. She seemed to be our age and was a bit slim with red hair and dark grey eyes. She had a button nose and wore a loose grey tank top with loose black sweatpants. On seeing us, the girl smiled and walked over. "Hi," she greeted. "You must be the rogues I heard about." Seeing our confused looks, she giggled. "News travels fast around here, trust me on that," she explained, whispering lightly. "Well, I'll say." Cedric nodded in a daze. "My name is Rita Carter." She offered her hand to us, her cheery smile diffusing our worries a bit. "My dad is the beta of this pack." "Which is?" I asked, accepting her hand. "Black stone pack." "Oh." I slowly nodded. " My name is Tori Allen." "This is Cedric Hughes." I nodded towards Cedric. "Yeah, that's what's up." Cedric nodded smugly , earning a giggle from Rita as he took her hand in a gentle handshake. "So what pack are you from?" Rita asked. "Well..." I slowly sighed, tugging at the lose end of my hair. "We don't have a pack." "What? Really?" Rita's eyes widened in disbelief. Cedric nodded. "Well, that's a pity." She pouted and sat beside us. A heavy silence hung in the air. "What is the Alpha going to do with us?" I finally broke the silence. Rita turned towards us and my heart fell at the slight fear written on her face. "I really wish I can give a perfect answer to that. Alpha Oliver is unpredictable."
