Chapter 2

I stared at the door of what was supposed to be my new classroom. I had moved into the city days ago, and my parents didn't even waste time enrolling me here. By the goddess, it looked like I was going to hate this place. I leaned my ear to the door and listened. I could already hear murmurs from the students and mutterings from someone I assumed to be an adult. I drew in a sigh and knocked. There was a pause before I heard someone clear their throat. "Come in." I opened the door and walked in. As soon as I made it in, there was a hush. Numerous pairs of eyes focused on me. Some of them reflected surprise and some confusion. I guess it was my attire. I wore a black loose tank top that revealed my slightly toned biceps and tight black jeans that hugged my perfect legs with black and white sneakers. I had a grey satchel slung across my right shoulder. I smiled as the teacher's previous annoyance quickly shifted to realisation. “Oh, I forgot.” He turned to the class. “We were supposed to have a new student today.” “Please introduce yourself.” He faced me. My eyes scanned the class as if trying to pick out potential threats. I narrowed my eyes at the flirtatious grin some random jock sent to me. I scoffed and then glanced to the left. A blonde chick sneered at me, and I mentally rolled my eyes. I finally spotted a blonde boy on the far right. He had light blue eyes, a round nose, and thin lips. His eyes met mine with a raised eyebrow. ‘We should study this one carefully. There’s something about him.’ My wolf mused. For once, I agreed with my pesky animal. My eyes then landed on a boy beside the blonde. He had black curly hair, freckles on his narrow nose, and unbelievably full red lips. Red as blood. My forehead creased in confusion. There was no way those lips were natural. He could not be using makeup, could he? His eyes met mine, and he swallowed, looking away. ‘I like this one,' my wolf piped. ‘He looks so innocent and adorable. He'd be fun to mess around with.’ I rolled my eyes and began my introduction. “My name is Tori Allen," I said. “I moved here from Miami. I love sports and love my personal space. I don’t like hurting people unless you push my buttons. So for the rest of my stay at this school, I want a peaceful coexistence with people here, or there will be hell to pay. Thank you.” I ended my sentence and faced the teacher with the most innocent smile ever. I had not just threatened violence. I faced the class again. The majority of the students had their mouths wide open. I knew what they were wondering. How could someone sound so calm and threatening at the same time? “Right." The teacher blinks awkwardly. “Thank you for that ‘wonderful’ introduction. Take a seat by...” He scanned the class briefly until his eyes landed on the empty seat beside the two boys I stared at earlier. “Those two young gentlemen there.” He finished. I shrugged and walked straight to the seat, ignoring the eyes on me. I sat beside the two boys. “Okay then, let’s resume class," the teacher said. A few minutes in, and I was already bored. I stifled a yawn at intervals as he droned on and on. The lecture seemed to be endless. I sighed in frustration and was about to put my head on the table when I heard someone call out to me. I glanced sideways to see the blonde giving me a curious look. "Can I help you?" I raised an eyebrow. “Hi," he said. “I’m Cedric. Cedric Hughes.” "Okay." I slowly nodded. “This is Jack Kent." The blonde, Cedric, jutted a thumb at his black-haired friend, who sent a nervous wave. 'Well, it turns out the boys are harmless,' I mused inwardly. ‘You’re telling me," my wolf retorted. ‘Especially the quiet one.’ “Nice to meet you guys,” I said aloud to the boys, but careful enough to not draw any attention to them. “So your tank top? You like dogs?” Cedric pointed to the image on my top. “Oh yeah." I grinned, showing my full teeth. "More than you’ll ever know. Some might say I’m closer to them than humanly possible.” Cedric raised his eyebrows in interest, and Jack cringed a bit, seemingly disturbed. “I have no idea what any of that means," Cedric said, scratching his chin, “but that’s cool. You’re alright.” “Yeah, same here.” I nodded. “And you too,” I added, turning to Jack. "I..thanks." His voice was like a whisper. "Sorry to ask this personal question." I frowned a bit, pointing to his lips. "But is that make-up?" "Huh?" His eyes widened a bit. "No. It's...It's natural." He swiped his thumb across his lip and showed me. There was no stain. "Unbelievable," I said, shaking my head in awe. "You better believe it," Cedric said. "He was born like that." "Oh?" I smirked at Jack. "Interesting. I dig it." Jack merely nodded with a small smile and looked away. A low chuckle escaped my lips, and I faced the class. Much to my relief, minutes later, the class was dismissed, and I quickly stood up to follow the rushing students out of the class. “Hold on, Miss Allen," the teacher called out, halting my movements and killing my joy. “I would like to have a word with you. The rest of you students are free to go.” I let out a frustrated groan as he walked over to his seat. As soon as the class was empty, save for two of us, and my eyes couldn’t pick up on any possibly eavesdropping beings, I walked over to him and stood in front of the table that separated them. He folded his arms and gave me a look. “Hello, Uncle Wes.” I forced a smile and placed my hands behind my back. That's right. The teacher I just met and was bored with his lecture earlier happened to be my paternal uncle. Wesley Allen is the younger brother of my dad. “Tori." He grinned. “It’s been a while. How have you been?” “Great. Kind of.” “And your parents? Especially your dad. I hope he’s on his best behaviour.” "Oh, he is. Mum makes sure of that.” A long silence stretched between us, and I soon tapped her feet impatiently. “I’m guessing you didn’t ask me to wait behind just to catch up on family matters," I said. “Tori.” Uncle Wes looked concerned. “I know you didn’t just move here because your parents suddenly decided to change locations. I heard what happened. Your dad filled me in.” “What?" I gaped. “Dad told you?!” “He’s my brother.” Uncle Wes deadpanned. “He tells me a lot. You should know that by now.” “Of course," I muttered, rolling my eyes. “Anyway, I have a friend who stays around. Kieran. He’s a doctor and can examine you," he suggested. “Yeah, dad mentioned it before we moved," I said. “Is your friend?” “A werewolf like the rest of us?” he finished. “Yes, he is. I wouldn’t have it any other way.” ‘I hope there are no needles involved.’ My wolf joked. "Very funny." I didn't realise I said that aloud until I caught a bemused grin on Uncle Wes' face. “Having a squabble with your wolf?” he asked. “Oh, you have no idea," I sighed. “Look, Uncle Wes, I will think about it. I’m still getting used to my powers, and I’m not feeling emotionally ready to face a test for which I may or may not like the results. Controlling my wolf is hard enough as it is now. But I promise you, when I’m ready, you’ll be one of the first to know.” He stared at me with a dubious gaze. “Cross my heart and hope for something.” I made the sign and smiled innocently. “Alright, you can go.” Uncle Wes was dismissed with an eye roll. “See you around!” I piped and scurried off. Hopefully, he didn't remember anything else to keep me in the class.
