The Return

Chapter 3: The Return The castle stirred with new life. For the first time in ten years, sunlight crept through the grime-caked windows, painting golden ribbons across the stone floors. Flowers—wild roses and moonflowers that Annabelle had planted with her own hands—bloomed defiantly in cracked stone planters along the eastern corridor. The pack members, once fearful and hunched, now dared to hope. They smiled when they passed her in the halls. They bowed their heads with genuine respect, not the hollow deference of the terrified. Annabelle stood in the training yard, watching Jason spar with his Beta, a scarred warrior named Theron. Their movements were fluid, powerful—a dance of muscle and instinct. But what caught her breath was the change in Jason himself. The sickly pallor that had clung to his skin for a decade was fading. The shadows beneath his eyes had receded. And the marks on his arms—those dark, twisting brands that had marked him as afflicted—pulsed faintly silver where her touch had healed them. "Focus," Jason called, catching her gaze across the yard. A rare smile tugged at his lips, softening the hard lines of his face. His eyes, once hollow, now burned with warmth—for her. Annabelle blushed, her cheeks warming beneath the morning sun. She still wasn't used to being looked at—really looked at—like she mattered. Like she was something precious rather than something to be used and discarded. Her old pack had taught her to make herself small, invisible. Jason made her feel like she could fill the entire sky. Their bond hummed between them, a golden thread that pulsed with every heartbeat. It had been three days since the Blood Moon. Three days of learning each other's rhythms. Three days of Jason teaching her to control her wolf, to embrace the power that had always terrified her. She could feel him even now—his satisfaction as he landed a blow on Theron, his amusement when she bit her lip watching him, his fierce protectiveness that wrapped around her like a cloak. But something was wrong. The bond flickered with unease, and it wasn't hers. The pack was whispering. Guards exchanged nervous glances at their posts. A young wolf—barely sixteen, with trembling hands and wide eyes—approached her and bowed so deeply his forehead nearly touched the ground. "Luna." His voice cracked. "There's… someone at the gates. She demands to see the Alpha. She refuses to leave." Annabelle's wolf bristled, hackles rising in her chest. The warmth of the bond chilled. "Who?" The young wolf swallowed hard. "Lady Seraphina. Alpha Jason's former betrothed." The name hit like a blade between her ribs. Jason had mentioned her once. Briefly. He'd been standing at the window, staring out at the darkened forest, and his voice had gone flat—empty—in a way that hurt Annabelle more than any rage could have. He'd said, "She was there before the affliction took hold. She was gone by the time the first mark appeared on my skin." And his expression had shuttered so completely that Annabelle had known not to press further. But she knew the rest of the story from the pack's whispers. Seraphina was the woman who had abandoned him—left him when the curse first took hold, when his father died, when his pack turned against him. She'd fled to a rival Alpha, spread rumors that Jason was dangerous, a threat to anyone who came near. She'd built her new life on his suffering. And now she was here. Jason strode over, his face hardening as he read the tension in the air. He didn't ask what was wrong. He already knew. "I told the guards to turn her away." "She's not leaving." Annabelle's voice was steady, but her hands trembled against her thighs. "She says she wants to see you." Jason's jaw tightened, a muscle twitching beneath his stubbled cheek. "Whatever she wants, she won't get it. Stay here." "Absolutely not." Annabelle lifted her chin, feeling her wolf surge in agreement. "If she wants to speak to my mate, I'm coming with you. I won't hide like I'm ashamed of what we are." Something flickered in Jason's eyes. Surprise. Pride. A fierce, possessive warmth that made her knees weak. "Fine. But if she disrespects you—" "I can handle myself." She stepped closer, pressing her palm to his chest. She felt his heart pounding, felt his wolf raging beneath his skin. "Jason. I'm not the frightened girl you found in the woods. She made me stronger. You made me stronger." His hand covered hers, squeezing gently. "I know, little moon. I know." They walked to the gates together, side by side. Annabelle's wolf stirred, alert and ready. She could smell the intruder's scent—expensive perfume masking something sour beneath, like milk turning bad. The pack gathered behind them, a silent wall of support that made Annabelle's heart swell. And there she stood. Lady Seraphina. Tall and elegant, draped in fine silk and glittering jewels that caught the muted morning light. Her dark hair cascaded over her shoulders like a waterfall of ink, and her golden eyes scanned the castle with undisguised disdain—as if she were inspecting a peasant's hovel rather than a centuries-old fortress. Her lips curved into a practiced smile, the kind that didn't reach her eyes. Jason's hand found Annabelle's, squeezing tight. "Jason. Darling." Seraphina's voice was honey and poison, smooth and cloying. "You look… different. Almost healthy. I hardly recognized you." "Seraphina." Jason's voice was ice, cold enough to freeze the very air between them. "What do you want?" "Can't a woman visit her former betrothed?" She stepped forward, reaching for his arm with manicured fingers. Jason stepped back, placing Annabelle slightly behind him—a shield, she realized, not for himself, but for her. "You had your chance. You left." Seraphina's smile didn't waver, but something flickered in those golden eyes. Anger. Humiliation. Her gaze slid to Annabelle, scanning her with barely concealed contempt. "And this must be the legendary Lunar Elf Wolf. The one everyone is whispering about. A hybrid. Half-elf, half-wolf." She tilted her head, lips pursing. "Forgive me, I expected… something different." Annabelle felt her wolf growl, low and dangerous. "I expected you to have better timing. You abandoned him when he needed you most. Why come back now? What's changed?" "Because I heard the affliction is breaking." Seraphina's eyes glittered with something sharp and hungry. "And I want my rightful place back." Jason laughed—cold, bitter, utterly devoid of humor. "Your rightful place? You fled when the curse took hold. You spread rumors that I was dangerous, a threat to everyone around me. You told the neighboring packs that I'd brought ruin upon my own father, that the darkness had consumed me. And now you think you can return and pick up where you left off?" "Your father promised me to you. Our packs were aligned. The treaty—" "Was broken the moment you left for another pack." Jason's voice dropped to a dangerous tone, the rumble of his Alpha power bleeding through. "Everyone knows what you did. Everyone knows who you really are." Seraphina's composure cracked, just slightly. Her smile faltered. "I needed protection! You were—" "Suffering. Yes. I remember." Jason stepped closer, and Annabelle felt the air thicken with his fury. "And now I'm healing. But I'm also not yours. I belong to someone else. Someone who didn't abandon me when I was broken. Someone who risked her life to save me when no one else would." Seraphina's golden eyes burned with pure jealousy. "You can't mean that. You cared for me once. You loved me." "Cared for who you pretended to be." Jason's voice softened, not with affection, but with pity—which Annabelle knew was far worse. "But I see clearly now. I see her." He glanced down at Annabelle, and his eyes filled with such warmth that she forgot to breathe. "I see my Luna. My future. My everything." Silence hung between them, thick as smoke. Then Seraphina's gaze shifted to Annabelle, and everything about her changed. Her composure shattered, replaced by pure, venomous jealousy. "Enjoy him while it lasts," she hissed, her voice dropping low enough that only Annabelle could hear. "You think he loves you? You're just a remedy to him. A tool. Once the affliction is gone, once he no longer needs your hybrid blood to heal him, he'll discard you like everyone else. You're nothing but a means to an end." Annabelle felt the words strike deep, carving wounds into the fragile confidence she'd been building. Fear curled in her chest, cold and treacherous. What if Seraphina was right? What if she was just a cure, a remedy for his suffering? What if— "No." Jason's voice was firm, cutting through her spiraling doubts like a blade through shadow. He pulled Annabelle into his side, his arm wrapping possessively around her waist. His warmth seeped into her, chasing away the cold. "She's my mate. My Luna. My everything." He stared down Seraphina, his Alpha power rolling off him in waves that made the very stones tremble. "I would not let anyone speak to her like that. Especially not you. Do you want to test my patience?" Seraphina's face twisted, all pretense of elegance gone. "You'll regret this. When the Witch Queen comes—" "What do you know about the Witch Queen?" Jason's grip tightened, his body going rigid with alarm. Seraphina smiled sharply, a predator's grin. "I know she's coming for your precious bride. I know she's been waiting for a Lunar Elf Wolf to appear, waiting for the one who could break her hold on this land. And I know that when she comes, she will destroy your little hybrid. And I'll be there to watch." She laughed, high and brittle. "I'll be there to cheer." She turned and walked away, her silk gown trailing through the mud, and disappeared into the forest with unnatural speed. The trees seemed to swallow her whole, and within moments, even her scent had faded. Jason's grip on Annabelle tightened, pulling her closer. His heart hammered against her back. "She's working with her. I should have known. I should have seen it." "The Witch Queen?" Annabelle's voice was small, trembling despite her efforts to steady it. "What does she want with me? I don't understand—I've never even met her." "To stop you. To keep her hold on this land." Jason turned her to face him, his hands cupping her cheeks. His eyes burned with fierce, desperate intensity. "You're the only one who can break it, Annabelle. The Lunar Elf Wolf bloodline—you carry the power to sever the bond between her and this realm. She's been hunting your kind for centuries. And now that you're here, now that you've found me, she knows her time is running out." Annabelle swallowed her fear. It sat like a stone in her throat, heavy and suffocating. She was tired of being scared. Tired of being helpless. Tired of watching the people she loved face danger while she cowered in the shadows. "Then we fight back," she said firmly, her voice gaining strength with each word. "We prepare. We train. We don't wait for her to come to us—we make sure we're ready when she does." Jason's lips curved into a smile—not the bitter, tired smile she'd seen so often, but something genuine and bright. "That's my Luna," he murmured, pressing his forehead to hers. "That's my fierce, beautiful mate." But late that night, as Annabelle lay in Jason's arms, she couldn't sleep. She felt the darkness closing in, felt the weight of prophecy pressing down on her shoulders. The Witch Queen was coming. Seraphina was plotting. And as she drifted into an uneasy sleep, Annabelle couldn't shake the feeling that everything was about to change. Everything. ---
