*Chapter 2: The Awakening*
Then a bright white light erupted from her mark causing her to cry out. Her wolf awakened after many years of thought to be gone and she transformed into the Lunar Elf Wolf, the rarest type of wolf that was only seen once in a thousand years, she was a goddess and was given away without knowing her true purpose and identity.
Annabelle stood trembling in Jason's arms, silver light still flickering across her skin. Her wolf pulsed beneath the surface — powerful, ancient, alive. After twenty years of silence, she was overwhelmed.
"I don't understand," she whispered, pulling back to look at him. "I was supposed to be wolfless. Powerless. Everyone said—"
"Everyone was wrong." Jason's voice was rough, full of awe. His scarred hands cupped her face with impossible gentleness. "You're a Lunar Elf Wolf. The most powerful creature in existence. My curse… it's fading."
His marks no longer pulsed angrily. They shimmered with silver where she had touched him.
Annabelle looked down at her hands. They glowed faintly. The mark on her cheek felt different — warmer, like a light awakening.
"I'm scared," she admitted, her voice small.
Jason just stared at her without saying a word.
Then shouts echoed from outside the castle walls. Angry, desperate voices.
"Let us in! We demand to see her!"
Annabelle froze. She knew those voices. Mr. and Mrs. Wright. Clara.
"Don't," Jason growled, reading her fear. "They gave you away. They don't get to take you back."
But her wolf stirred, confused. These people raised her. They were all she had ever known. Even if they had hurt her, they were still—
"They're at the gates," a guard burst in, bowing hastily. "Alpha, the Wright family is begging to see the Luna. They claim she belongs to them."
Jason's eyes burned. "She was unwanted in their house. They gave her away." He turned to Annabelle. "Tell me what you want. I will give you anything."
"I don't want to go back." The words tumbled out, stronger than she expected. "I never want to see them again."
Jason pulled her close. "Then you won't. I'll have them removed."
But as he spoke, something flickered in his eyes. Pain. Strain. His marks began to darken again.
"The curse," Annabelle breathed. "It's fighting back."
Jason nodded grimly. "Your presence weakens it, but when you leave, it returns."
Annabelle reached up, touching his scarred cheek. Silver light bloomed under her fingers. Jason gasped, his eyes closing.
"You're not a monster," she said softly. "I thought I was nothing. You thought you were cursed. But together… maybe we can be something else."
His eyes opened, bright with unshed tears. "You have no idea what you've done to me. Seven brides before you. All left before midnight. I thought I was poison. But you…" He pressed his forehead to hers. "You're my salvation."
Outside, the Wrights' voices grew louder. Clara's voice pierced through: "Annabelle! Get out here! You owe us! We raised you!"
Annabelle flinched. Old habits. Old fear.
Jason took her hand. "Come. Let me show you something."
He led her to a balcony overlooking the castle gates. Below, Mr. Wright was red-faced, shouting. Mrs. Wright wept. Clara stood with her arms crossed, her beautiful face twisted with fury.
When she spotted Annabelle on the balcony, Clara's eyes widened. "There she is! Annabelle, come down here right now!"
But Clara stopped mid-sentence. Her mouth fell open. For the first time, she truly saw Annabelle. The glow. The silver wolf aura. The power radiating from her.
"What… what are you?" Clara breathed.
Annabelle felt her wolf stir. She stood taller. "I'm the woman you gave away. I'm the Luna of this pack. And I'm done being your servant."
"Luna?" Mr. Wright sputtered. "You're nothing! You can't even shift!"
Silver light burst from Annabelle's body. Her wolf howled. Every window in the castle vibrated.
When the howl faded, Mr. Wright was on his knees. Mrs. Wright was sobbing. Clara had backed away, face white with shock.
"Leave this place," Jason said from behind Annabelle, his voice carrying weight. "Before I let her show you what she truly is."
They fled. Scrambling, crying, running away.
Annabelle watched them go. She expected to feel grief. But all she felt was relief.
"You're strong," Jason said, coming to stand beside her. "Stronger than you know."
She looked up at him. "I have a lot to learn."
"I'll teach you." He took her hand. "But first, you need to rest. The first shift takes everything from you."
He led her back inside. Not to the cold stone room, but to a different chamber. Warm. Bright. A fire crackled. Flowers bloomed on the windowsill.
"This was my mother's room," Jason admitted quietly. "I haven't been able to enter it in years. The curse touched everything. But when you shifted… the castle felt your light."
Annabelle sat on the edge of the bed, exhausted. Her wolf was silent now, content.
"Will the curse come back?" she asked. "Now that I'm not touching you?"
Jason's expression tightened. "It's weakened. But not gone. Only you can break it fully."
"How?"
He knelt before her, taking both her hands. "You'll have to complete the mating bond with me. Completely. Accept me as your mate." His eyes met hers. "But doing so will drain you. It won’t be easy. I won't ask you to—"
"Yes."
His eyes widened. "Annabelle—"
"Yes." She squeezed his hands. "You looked at me like I was worthy when everyone else saw nothing. You're not a monster. And I'm not letting you stay cursed."
Silver light flickered between their joined hands. The room warmed. The flowers bloomed brighter.
Jason pulled her into his arms, burying his face in her hair. "I don't deserve you."
"Maybe that doesn't matter," she whispered.
Outside, the Blood Moon began to set. Dawn was coming. And for the first time in ten years, the Cursed Alpha let himself believe he might have a future.
But far away, in the dark heart of the forest, a woman watched the castle through a crystal ball. Her eyes burned with ancient magic. Her smile was cruel.
"So," the Witch Queen murmured. "The Lunar Elf Wolf awakens. And my curse is crumbling."
She raised her hand, and shadows danced around her fingers.
"Time to remind them who truly rules this world."
