Chapter 3

Chandler scrutinized the footage for a while. He instinctively tried to grab it, but Jaidyn stopped him. Julia looked at me tentatively and asked, "Why are you here? Is the competition already over?" I calmly told her that I had withdrawn. A brief flash of joy flickered in Julia's eyes, quickly masked by a feigned look of concern. "Well, there's nothing wrong with withdrawing. If you ask me, you're not cut out for competitions. Look, everyone else's equipment is fine, yet yours is always breaking. Maybe it's a sign you're not meant to compete." Jaidyn's face turned red with anger at her words. If she weren't a girl, he probably would have already taken action. I snorted coldly, no longer indulging her. I stepped forward and slapped her across the face. "You're beyond shameless! Don't pretend you don't know how my snowboard got damaged. Maybe a call to the police will jog your memory?" As soon as my slap landed, Chandler lunged at me, yelling like a madman. But upon hearing that I was going to call the police, he immediately cowered. Julia clutched her face, her eyes brimming with both resentment and smug satisfaction. "Go ahead and call the police! Chandler forced me to switch snowboards. I thought since he was your boyfriend, he wouldn't harm you. I'm innocent!" Chandler frowned, looking at her in confusion. Julia leaned close to his ear and whispered a few words. Chandler instantly transformed, arrogantly declaring, "Yeah, you asked me to switch snowboards for you last night! Go ahead and call the police if you dare!" Unable to hold back any longer, Jaidyn clenched his fist and punched Chandler. Chandler covered his face and yelled, "Just you wait!" Then, he pulled Julia along as they hurried out of the monitoring room. Before leaving, he didn't forget to shoot a disdainful glance at Jaidyn and me. "Let's break up. I don't want a girlfriend who relies on sleeping her way to the top." Jaidyn was about to retaliate, but I swiftly slapped Chandler again. Chandler wanted to fight back, but seeing Jaidyn's menacing glare, he could only swallow his anger, spit out a harsh threat, and run away. Jaidyn trembled with rage. "Adeline, how can you be so calm? How can someone be so shameless? He ruined your future and still acts so self-righteous? Does he really think he won't go to jail? I'm calling the police right now!" Naturally, my heart burned with anger, but I knew that calling the police now wouldn't solve the problem. I needed them to expose themselves and walk right into their own trap. Suddenly, the staff in the monitoring room took a call, and, to our shock, deleted the very footage Jaidyn had saved. Jaidyn was dumbfounded, but I sneered. As expected. It seemed they had gone to find Seamus for support. I tried to persuade Jaidyn not to get involved in my troubles, but he insisted, "You are my student. How can I stand by and watch when you've been wronged? I'll make sure justice is served, no matter who's involved." Unable to dissuade him, I had no choice but to explain the whole story as we headed to Seamus's office. I explained that Chandler was the only non-professional involved in a major, high-stakes skiing project. The project had a huge investment, and the competition committee had initially wanted to abandon it. However, someone suddenly invested a large sum of money and specifically requested Chandler's participation. Three years had passed, and the project was about to make a major breakthrough. To avoid offending the investor, the competition committee would definitely do everything in its power to protect Chandler. Jaidyn suddenly understood. "So, Chandler has a powerful background? But that's no excuse for his outrageous behavior!" The words "powerful background" echoed in my mind. I suddenly realized that this must be what everyone on the competition committee thought, including Julia. She was probably hoping to latch onto this wealthy and influential connection. No wonder she had looked down on Chandler last year, saying I had bad taste. But this year, she suddenly became attentive to him, turning into his devoted follower. I was so focused on skiing back then, spending all my time either training or reviewing my performance. Plus, it was my first relationship, and I was inexperienced. Although I felt disappointed by some of Chandler's actions, I thought it was normal. I was about to reassure Jaidyn, urging him not to get too anxious. But before I knew it, we were already at the door of Seamus's office. We knocked before entering out of courtesy, only to be met by Seamus's grim, steely expression.
